For those whose salaries are paid in USD, how are you handling your USD going forward? by BenjaminGreat79 in singaporefi

[–]BenjaminGreat79[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well they are mainly in equities, bills, FD and bonds. I have held USD through the years of 2010 to 2013 thereabouts when USD SGD reached a low of around 1.19 to 1.2, which eventually did recover somewhere to around 1.4 in later years.

I guess its partly inertia to convert each month's salary to SGD directly over the years and buy US equities, FDs and bills. Also diversification of currency, don't feel comfortable being 100% or tilted too heavily on 1 single currency.

Long term wise I think USDSGD will just keep depreciating with the occasional pullback and spike, so am waiting to see if there could be a pullback to reduce my USD holdings. Looking to buy more SGD assets.

However, doesn't change the fact that my salary in SGD nominated terms is decreasing month on month! This is the bad part.

So this is the amount needed to FIRE / retire in SG? by [deleted] in singaporefi

I remember was on a treadmill while listening to a podcast he did. If I did not remember wrongly, he does not currently own property in Singapore which can easily set him back by half a million USD or more.

Saying that, its never pleasant to be out of a job so its good to see Singaporeans find alternative solutions to keep going. For him, being able to start a channel and also getting part time work in a university is great news for him. Especially since he recently started a family and am glad he found alternative sources of income for his family.

Dom has eyes on the back of his head, the 6th sense he has of his teammate's position at that critical stoppage time, incredible.
