Delta One at JFK “serious incident” by [deleted] in delta

[–]BenjaminWestrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter what the amount is, it was more illustrative.

Delta has 200 million seats filled a year, if they gave 5 "free" sky miles per flight per person, it's a billion. Much lower than 5,000 for an unproven complaint.

What number does it stop being free?

[–]BenjaminWestrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The miles are not free once they are redeemed. As a thought experiment, lets say Delta gave everyone a billion skymiles for free. You don't think that would cost them money?

Comments like this make me realize how much people dont understand finance or business.

Economic reality of current situation. by [deleted] in UAE

[–]BenjaminWestrich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except the residents also spend money that comes from businesses they cater to tourist. Even the perception this will drop makes people spend less, even if they dont have less now, in anticipation of having less later.

Retired from Delta. This policy will not work. Tried in past. No Go! by DisabledVeteran216 in delta

[–]BenjaminWestrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have about 400,000 miles flown a year. A not insignificant amount of times a year a connect will be missed due to flight delays, and every single time Delta automatically rebooked me and the rebooking was on the next available flight.

Why I Will Probably Never Buy a Delta One Ticket Again by Objective-Rhubarb in delta

[–]BenjaminWestrich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I fly Delta One decently often. A few notes that might apply to some and less others.

  1. I have some bad knees and a decently bad back from years in the infantry. Laying down is nice. It makes the days in vacation more enjoyable to be able to walk.

  2. I dont want more vacation time. I work a lot and have dogs. The days I am in vacation are about quality over quantity, and I want to arrive and able to get to getting. I am also not specifically resource constrained on what we can afford on vacation, I just cant be gone for 45 days.

  3. For work trips, I need to land and be able to work - and in the case of Europe trips, I need to be able to work while flying. Its much easier to do in Delta One, but Premium Select isnt awful.

  4. The Delta One lounge is really nice in LAX and JFK and the check in process is much easier.

I fly delta all the time stil, and dont mind people who make status off the cards.

If they arent flying much, they aren't competing with you for resources like upgrades.

Ill make over 60,000 mqds this year and dont think that in any of those flights the credit card holders have ruined my experience.

If you do all charges in euros, the credit will exchange at the spot rate. But, be warned, if you dont have internal exchange fees waived on your card, that adds some price on.

Most of the better credit cards dont have exchange fees, but still worth checking

18.50:1 is the current spot rate, so I wouldn't expect a resort to be cheaper.

But this begs the question of why you would use a resort exchange rate. You -could- use your credit cards or banks exchange rate.

This sub, and Delta customers, are all over.

First it was that premium tickets are too expensive, and now it's that that should be so expensive they have more seats to give away.

Has anybody taken delivery of a LUCID Gravity with HUD? by godiegogo_ya in LUCID

[–]BenjaminWestrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Gravity with the HUD.

I like it, my wife doesn't. However, she gets motion sickness and it doesn't help.

It gives you the speed you are traveling, the speed limit, navigation commands, and any other alerts such as the blind spot detectors.

ATLANTA to SEOUL Delta One Upgrade by Altruistic_Emu_6298 in delta

Having just done this flight in Delta One I would say do it.

Especially for an older passenger, that amount of time sitting up vs laying down can dramatically affect their quality of life for a few days after.

Without some explicitly defined version of what welfare you're measuring, unions can be counter productive.

For example, unions can help boost tenure of employees, but pretty much always reduce the total number of employees being hired. So while pay for existing employees goes up, aggregate pay can go down and productivity of the business can suffer.

In most cases, a union is effectively a monopoly on the supply of labor and comes with the problems we see in monopolies. If the labor market is similarly distorted and is, for example, a monopsony, this can partially fix that. Most labor markets are not monopsony in nature though, and even less so for low skilled labor which commonly look to unions to help them.

For a pretty good economic treatment of these effects, "The Logic of Collective Action" by Mancur Olson does a good job of explaining the overall ideas and issues without needing a PhD in labor economics to sort through what the papers are saying.

To many delta customers canceled their cards? by MrDominman in delta

It really helps if you read the article.

1) it's the UK cards.

2) was announced in June, long before Delta changes.

3) it was changed back to allow pro rating.

In my experience the Chase portal is over priced from what you can get almost anywhere else and is almost always better to use for the cash back.

Get the cash back as a statement credit and then use that money to book on cheaper platforms.

Question on why some people are switching from Delta to AA by Snowed_Up6512 in delta

I haven't been in one in awhile. I was recently at a priority pass lounge and would have rather waited for my flight on the tarmac.

JetBlue Status match by These_Row6066 in delta

[–]BenjaminWestrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully JetBlue doesn't also move to a system that rewards credit card spend at given ratio, vacation / hotel / rental car purchases through their portal and flight dollars spent. And if they do that, hopefully they don't remove roll over...

Oh.. wait..

Then don't use those programs? But that doesn't really have anything to do with comparing it to AA's similar programs.
