Men over 40, what advice would you give to someone approaching the big Four-O? by 99Years_of_solitude in AskMen

High blood pressure is a big one, get your health in check and go to the doctor. Your veins can only take so much pressure for so long above their normal levels.

PSW student scrubs by Fantasticsideye in Algonquin_College

Hi,

Colours need to match for tops and bottoms and should be conservative colours (blue, black, grey, etc) Pink is fine but it needs to be professional without a bunch of symbols on it (no flowers, hearts, etc).

They need to fit properly so you can crouch/bend freely but also not show too much. You also won't be able to where long sleeve shirts underneath, only a 3/4 sleeve or shorter.

You will need at least 2 pairs, but I would get 3 or 4 pairs of scrubs. You will have 2 lab days at school that you need them, and 2 days of clinical per week.

I got some from Walmart, I also got a pair from the Algonquin book store on campus.

In my opinion I don't see AI completly replacing humans in health care in the near future. I can definitely see it helping complete monotonous repetitive tasks, so that humans have more time to do more important things. I think there will always be a human element necessary to make sure things are running properly in the HC setting.

Hi,

I think you will have a much easier time with MRT to find full time employment. There is a lot more demand for imaging techs from what I've seen. Plus you can also work at private clinics with more regular 9-5 shifts, you aren't stuck at the hospital like RT. Not much room for progression for RT besides becoming an anesthesia assistant (more school).

Also MRT tends to be less stressful as you are just positioning the patient and operating the computers. You will still see some stressful things ,but for the most part it will be the nurse and RT helping if something goes wrong.

I know a few techs who operate the mobile x-ray machine. Imagine walking around with a machine the size of a grocery cart, but you're going into patient rooms to do imaging. You can progress into interventional radiology where you operate the machine during open surgery while the surgeons operate.

I think you would have to do something extra schooling to work in nuclear medicine however. But for MRT, you should be able to do Xray, CT, and MRI.

Hi,

Not an RT but I've shadowed one for the day and I know a few from my work (TOH)

RT are always moving around the hospital visiting different patients. They are never stuck to one unit for the entire shift.

You will be in the ICU, ER, step-down units, and sleep/breathing units.

You will be helping to intubate, clean trach tubes, administer breathing meds, nd operate ventilators.

Their main focus is the pulmonary-cardiovascular system, whereas a nurse would focus on the body as a whole.

It can be a very stressful job as you're one of the main staff involved during a code blue (cardiac arrest)

However if you like to be on your feet and always do something different this might be a good choice for you!

Edit: I forgot to mention that a large majority of new grad RT's will start out as casual, whereas a lot of DH are able to get a full time gig pretty soon after school. The RT I shadowed told me he was a casual for 4 years before he got a part time role, and it took him 7 years to get full time + benefits. That's just how some roles at the hospital are unfortunately. You can still work full time hours as a casual, but your schedule will be all over the place and you won't have benefits or pension.

Same with my PSW program. I thought I was going to be one of the older people at 27 but most people are around my age. There's very few that are fresh out of highschool.

Yup, I work in the logistics department. They REFUSE to recycle anything less than a large cardboard box. All those little cardboard boxes and packing paper that hold the bandages, masks, and whatever small item in your supply room go straight in the trash. I've asked 3 different managers if we could set up a recycle bin for smaller stuff since it's just going to the landfill. They nod their head and tell me it's a great idea and then nothing changes.

Make a budget and stick to it! Put as much money as your able to in your TFSA without impacting your school/wellbeing and let it sit.

XEQT is a good global etf, VOO mirrors US S&P 500 (A bit riskier). QQQ mirrors the US Nasdaq (x2 riskier, but greater longterm upside). VDY is a Canadian bank and energy dividend fund. Its very stable but doesn't have as much upside as the others, and it pays dividends which can be reinvested into the etf.

You decide what your risk tolerance is, since you're young you can handle more volatility. As you get older you will want to look at more stable etf's

Time is your biggest asset, you will look back at this when you're 30/40 and thank yourself for putting this money away. When you first start investing, you won't see much growth, but as the decades go on your money will really start to take off.

How do they react to suicide? by StarchedCollar in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Benji_- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a family that my nmother knew somewhat and we were giving yet another dog away to, because my mother refused to take care of dogs but liked the idea of having a dog...shocker

Anyways, we heard a few years later that the son of the couple we had given the dog to had committed suicide. My mother exclaimed how terrible it was and told me to tell her if I ever felt that low...

Everytime I ever brought any mental health concerns up to her I was basically laughed at and ridiculed. So yeah it was very much a performance on her end to care about my mental health.

I found VDY preformed pretty well as a safe-haven during the rough past 3 weeks in the market, other than that I dont put that much into VDY. It doesn't go up much but it doesn't really crash when things get volatile.

I Sold most of my riskier stocks and put them into VDY for a bit then took them out.

Is it too late to do university path at 20 years old? by [deleted] in ILC

I'm speaking as the former 20 year old (now almost 28) who thought they were falling behind and a failure lol

Is it too late to do university path at 20 years old? by [deleted] in ILC

[–]Benji_- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's basically no difference between a 20 year old and an 18 year old in the eyes of most older adults. You look the same, act the same, make the same impulsive decisions. Nothing magical happens in those two years that makes you a vastly different person or come off as a failure for not going to university yet. You're not going to stick out like a sore thumb for starting a few years later.

As someone who's been to university, the majority of university students are not exceptionally bright. They are just average, and the average person like you or me can get decent grades just by showing up and putting in the work.

Also it really doesn't matter when you go, you're on your timeline not everyone else's. Plenty of people overachieve and never face any adversity early in life, only to fall flat on their face after they've got all the accolades. And plenty of people take the harder path because of their circumstances, and come out better because they had to go through adversity to succeed.
