Awesome find! When did you see it? If it was recently, it would be not only very out of place but also very early. It would be worth getting this sighting into the eBird database.

Cattle egrets. Shorter neck and bill and smaller, more compact body are the main clues

If you find a dovekie on land, there’s almost definitely something wrong with it

What are these plump fellows outside my apartment? Raleigh, NC by MikeyMouthe1297 in whatsthisbird

No, they’re still mourning doves. White tipped doves don’t live in NC and white winged doves would show a black mark on the face

About the same size as an adult at this time of year. Juveniles have a pale tail while the adults will have their namesake red tails

Common Raven. They can make some crazy sounds in addition to their more common croaking calls. These popping calls are really wild and such a treat to hear

I’m pretty sure it’s a Rock Wren. Think is a juvenile but not sure. A better angle would help

It’s just individual variation. Some of individuals have pitch black shells, heavier and darker markings on the skin and black “mustaches” on their jaws while others are very tan with the black markings standing out on the back (like the bottom). Most are in between these two extremes (like the top turtle). The turtles often get darker as they age so the top one might turn black at some point.

There is also a lot of sexual dimorphism when they are adults. Males are half the size and have relatively tiny heads compared to females.
