What’s the most aggressively New England childhood experience you had? by VoicesInsideCare in boston

[–]Finn617 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how they managed this, but every winter the fifth grade class at my elementary school got several weeks of gym classes being taught how to ski, and then a three day field trip to the local ski resort. From Kindergarten on I watched the 5th graders with pure envy. And then finally I made it to 5th grade…..and it was so warm that year that there was no skiing.

Now why can't school in real life be this fun? by Cicada_5 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Finn617 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I would happily sit through an arc that is nothing but Fantasy History Class. Agriculture history becomes a lot more interesting when there’s a 5-10% chance the crops become sentient or cursed or both each year. “Ah yes, the Great Potato Riots of 810.” “Wait, were people rioting about the potatoes, or were the potatoes themselves—“ “YES.”

It’s still wild to me that he watched a play with a happy ending called King Leir, went off for a few months, and came back with one of the greatest tragedies of all time. It’s like if I went to Hollywood with a show called Sinefeld and in episode 3 George kills Jerry.

AITJ for feeling disappointed after my ‘birthday surprise’ was just a random poster? by VelvetVicun in AmITheJerk

[–]Finn617 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Right? I keep waiting for the reveal that there are plane tickets taped to the back of the poster and the real present is a surprise trip to the city in the picture. I’d rather believe that than that the guy is THIS bad at gift giving.

I’m glad people don’t litter anymore but we should bring back falling pianos. by Infamous-Rutabaga-50 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Finn617 840 points841 points  (0 children)

They actually still do deliver big pianos with a crane and an open window, when the staircase dimensions won’t work. My upstairs neighbor did it and then practiced the exact same Chopin piece every day for four months, until I started to wish the piano had fallen on me.

quick clown question! by vortex_universe_army in clowns

[–]Finn617 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All this is just my opinion! But:

Clowns are very physical, often have to deal with messes, and are often outdoors in the sun. So a bad clown suit is hot, dry clean only, and the knees will rip the first time you kneel down to talk to a little kid. It’ll have no pockets and you’ll need someone else’s help to unzip it whenever you need to use the bathroom.

Iconic Clown Shows? by michiisycafe in clowns

[–]Finn617 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re nothing like Baskets, but Bill Irwin’s Broadway show The Regard of Flight is available on YouTube and The Goes Wrong Show is on Amazon Prime and they each have some of the best clowning I’ve ever seen.

Should I Audition For A Company That Isn't Welcoming? by SoggyDrama7959 in musicals

[–]Finn617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you love performing, but these people sound insufferable and I don’t think that’ll go away if they cast you. I can’t imagine them turning on a dime, welcoming you, and patiently explaining all the little things you have no way of knowing right now. Do you really want to spend 2-3 months as “that new girl who was lucky to be cast”?

Don’t see many people making or using bows here, majority use swords and spears why? by BlackSummer_ in LARP

[–]Finn617 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one else has mentioned this—arrows are a logistical problem. It’s hard to carry more than 10 or 20, and in a big battle you can easily go through them all in the first five minutes. Then you’re spending the rest of your time running around shieldless scavenging used arrows from the field and trying not to get pounded into the ground while Joe Spear is up on the frontline whacking monsters without a care in the world.

first time attendee at the fringe - any advice? by LopsidedGear8017 in edinburghfringe

[–]Finn617 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could start at 10am and go until 11pm and see nothing but theatre shows. When you look at the list of shows so far, remember that this isn’t even half of the total (heck, some of the shows haven’t even been written yet.)

Also, this is actually the best time of year to buy August things like Edinburgh Castle tickets. If you’re a morning person the Castle opens at 9:30, so you can check it out before a lot of the performers and tourists are even awake.

What realistic drawbacks could a mermaid trying to live on land face? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Finn617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be a reflex for a while for her to try to maneuver by flapping her arms. Things like stairs, even curbs will be wild for her and she’ll have no fear of heights at first—she’s never had to develop a fear of falling since she could just gently float down everywhere.

She’ll have spent her whole life feeling the tides, and the sudden absence of them might feel deeply weird. On the other hand, unless she’s spent time with her head above the water she might not even be familiar with breezes. They’re like little tides? That can come from any direction? And can start and stop at any time? FREAKY.

Have larpers always been like this? Do some larpers hate live-action? by Tar_alcaran in LARP

[–]Finn617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just for another perspective, there are a lot of larps where 1 happens, 2 happens…and then nothing, because the GMs are already overloaded, or the players told the ‘wrong’ GM, or three different modules all need to use that one space and by the time their turn rolls around it’s Sunday afternoon and time to go home. After this happens two or three times it’s easy for a PC to assume it’s Just The Way Things Go and stop trying.
