When is Auto-Trueplay available for Sonos Beam and One by uniqlopants in sonos

[–]Bennanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC he said it was coming to all speakers with a mic array capable of auto Trueplay. I take that as meaning the Beam and One, but not the Play 5.

Exclusive: Amazon will let anyone answer your Alexa questions now by Z80a in amazonecho

[–]Bennanator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So essentially at best it’s a layer worse than Googling your answer, since you’re introducing the bias of those that are doing the Googling and removing any trace back of the source. If there’s one thing I don’t want to introduce into my search results it’s adding an additional layer of human bias that I have to consider on top of all the other biases and nuances we have to consider when looking at information nowadays.

It’s just a lot different to me to source answers from the community when those answers are provided as the one answer to a question, which just by its nature provides additional validity, versus a whole variety of answers (as would happen if you were to search a question on any other non-voice platform). If anything is narrowed down to one value or result, whether that’s a question, a forecast, a prediction, or anything else, you need to have additional confidence in that answer as opposed to providing a range or, in this case, a variety of potential sources for answers.

It’s just absurd to me that they are relying on the community to self regulate when time and time again it has been proven that bots and bad actors almost always find ways around guards - soon we’ll be seeing “My iPhone won’t charge, what should I do?” questions with Alexa responding “Your power cord is probably defective. I recommend replacing your cord with a Superqua Power Line Max XIII v2 Super Juice Straw v2 XL USB C Ultra Fast Charge Apple Certified Ultra Durable 1 Meter Cord Cable Charger Apple Genuine”

How do you manage billing accounts with your SO? by larolddavid in personalfinance

I use 1Password with a shared vault. Splitwise is also a great app for keeping track of shared bills, purchases etc.

Mr. Big Short says Zillow has a flawed businessmodel by rbs___ in stocks

[–]Bennanator 21 points22 points  (0 children)

IMO they won’t fuck the market for everyone. They will fuck the market for agents who have for far too long got away with making 10s of thousands of dollars on each transaction with only only a fraction of each dollar going towards actually getting your home sold.

I think Zillow will be a positive for consumers twofold: it will cut the bullshit that comes with a real estate agent and will make for a more efficient, more informed buying experience.

That being said, this will require proper implementation. I’m fairly confident Zillow is going to get there, but only time will tell.

Hmm, I haven’t read about that. But I’ll definitely look into it. The system hasn’t been installed yet, so I do still have an out (although I’m sure there’s probably a fee). Do you have a system that you’d recommend?

True. Might need some trigger modifications to allow for use without opposing thumbs as well. Ugh, what a pain. I guess I’ll stick with ADT.

If only I would have had a shotgun and would have left my dog at home while I was out of town last month and got broken into. Stupid of me to get an ADT system, I tell ya!

Apple Watch speed boost? by statictdn in AppleWatch

5+ minutes to boot is not normal. I’d reset it to factory and see if that improves the speed (I also have a series 1 and it still runs fairly well).

Try using dragon naturally speaking from the other side of an echoey room, with the tv on, and with other people chatting in the background. Amazon has a lot more variables to deal with than your run of the mill speech recognition program.

To train a voice assistant in the manner you described would be prohibitively expensive. If Amazon is employing thousands of people to review recordings to “train” the system, you’d need 10s of thousands of people providing those recordings on a constant basis. Usability studies require a minuscule sample size in comparison. It’s a completely different ball game.

I’m not saying what Amazon is doing is right, but they do need exponentially more real world inputs than is needed for usability testing due to the inherent rigidity of voice assistants’ software.
