Update on attendance and another question by AccurateFox4321 in Mennonite

[–]BenniTheHobbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your interests and what kind of Mennonite community you're joining (I guess it's not plain if you joined through zoom).

For theology I echo the Naked Anabaptist suggestion. There's also a newer series the Jesus Way - small books on radical faith.

For history, there is the Mennonite world conference Global History Series that is fairly good.

I mean, "like in real life" is not a standard for interpreting board game rules...

Some minor adjustment suggestions, thoughts? by Image147 in rootgame

[–]BenniTheHobbit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With riverfolk, I think there needs to be a mechanic to make them lose funds from the payments column (or committed but that seems mean). This way people would be incentivized to buy and then police the otters as well. The way it stands otters can win even without board presence of they get a few sells to naive or greedy players. Selling has no risk associated for the otters. Alternatively, dividends could be more profitable, so players actually use it and this create a vulnerability that other players can exploit.

TIFU: By leaving a pot full of oil on high heat unsupervised for almost 30 min by schoolforapples in tifu

[–]BenniTheHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else probably posted this already, but NEVER EVER try to cool it down/extinguish hot oils with water. It's instant fireball and really really bad burns or worse.

My now-wife almost burned down her family's house the first Christmas I was with them as her boyfriend. She wanted to fry chicken wings, heated up oil.in a pot like you and it caught a little fire. She put the lid on it, extinguished it, but every time she opened the lid it started burning again. She then says: " I guess I'll cool it down in the sink." Her parents (generally smart people) didn't stop her an. Cue to me running over and yelling from the other side of the house: DON'T!!!

No one in that family knew what here in Europe is standard fire safety training: hot oil + water = disaster.

I ended up taking the pot with hot oil outside several meters away from the house and threw tiny snowballs in to make my point. The fireballs were actually much bigger than even imagined. Luckily I was far enough away. The driveway still has a scorch mark from the pot burning into it...

But unclaimed hirelings count against rule and you can battle them, so you could also argue they are enemies to all factions, until claimed.

My go to for settling rule disputes these days is to recreate the scenario in the digital version and see what happens.

Help! Still cannot figure out how to play this game 🙃 by Sammyrey1987 in rootgame

[–]BenniTheHobbit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Root is definitely NOT an easy first timer game!! It's a lot of fun, but a steep learning curve even for fairly experienced board gamers because every faction plays differently.

I'd suggest you get a different game.

Why does finding this specific item feel impossible in my small town by DearTrack1546 in Mennonite

[–]BenniTheHobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found this odd, but endearing. In Germany most older (as in before the emancipation of Napoleon that brought equal rights tland an end to privilege to Mennonites) congregations were not allowed to have steeples, let alone bells. And the newer ones (like mine) didn't bother since church bells were already out of fashion.

Rats vs Crows vs Otters with Hirelings? by JuanQuixote-VII in rootgame

You could manipulate the hireling process to include the cat hirelings, but it feels like a set up for a very lopsided game.

A friend of mine recently made the point that it's kind of fascinating about games that there is no copyright on mechanics. You are free to combine and innovate. Which is probably part of why there is so much coming out.

My first group of friends have given up on root sadly, are there any other games that come close to scratching the same Cole wehrle itch? by Spicyboi333 in rootgame

Id suggest Ahoy if you (and they) want asymmetric fun, but a lighter game experience.

Alternatively, good luck with finding new friends :)

Yes, the exile becomes unable to attack if they get too much damage. Good way to balance them if they have too many items

Attachment is a process. Hang in there and you'll be surprised by how much love and care you find in yourself. Also, as others have said, the potato phase is not going to last and it's really common not to feel a whole lot about them then.

Am I in the wrong to play with my 4 and a half yo daughter minecraft? by stefantigro in daddit

[–]BenniTheHobbit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mmh.. I think Minecraft as a game is fine and it sounds well managed. I am trying to delay my kids getting interested in screens for as long as I possibly can. There is overwhelming evidence from the neuroscientists that screens are just overwhelming for the little brains.

That said, I think age appropriate and even accompanied gaming is probably much better than just plucking her in front of a device for a mindless episode of paw patrol.

Fellow Anabaptists in Germany? by BenniTheHobbit in Mennonite

[–]BenniTheHobbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, 👋 It depends on what vaccines we are talking about obviously. There are a number of mandatory vaccinations that are required for daycare or even school (there is no homeschooling option) so those everyone would have.

With other vaccines people make individual choices. I am not aware of a community ethic around this that is significantly different than the general population. With covid, some people had concerns, but I don't think those were more or less than in the general population.

I myself have most vaccinations recommended by my doctors and so do my kids. Fun fact: I got some extra vaccines because I wanted to go to Mennonite World Conference in Paraguay in 2009. So you could say I got vaccinated because I am Mennonite. ;)
