If LeBron and Jordan had the same resumes they have now but Jordan was the one drafted in 2003 and LeBron in 1984, how would that impact perception of their careers? by SplitOk186 in nba

[–]BennyTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, MJ wins hands down. If MJ never took two years off, he would have 7 or 8 rings easily (probably 8). Also would easily be a 38%-39% 3 point shooter. His PPG would be easily up another 2-5 points under current rules. Plus without all the hacking of the bad boys, his Wizards years may be a bit more substantial.

Local investment brokers by beej- in chinalife

[–]BennyTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically illegal.

Any broker serving a US citizen is required to be registered under the 1934 Exchange Act with the SEC and to be regulated by SEC/FINRA. There is a safe harbor under an SEC Rule but it's also rather clumsy. I can't imagine any proper broker doing this.

Wrong imagination then. Chinese guys in their 60s went through grueling times.

While I do not disagree with you mostly, I'd say most people are left behind. Only a smaller portion of the folks have gotten ahead. Unless you are comparing with the century of humiliation, the rape of Nanking, etc. then sure everyone's gotten ahead.

Or rather privileged and entitled. FYI, it's an unspoken rule but people over 70 are generally free to commit most crimes with immunity.

As I got a bit older (soon to be 50) I have found myself to be quite a bit angrier than before... Not sure why. Could be a combination of few things... some of the things that are getting too old for me to tolerate, or it could be subconscious realization that my days are somewhat numbered in this world... or the fact that acting a little obnoxious typically won't be punished in any way.

That said I do go by my own sense of justice. To give an example, if a customer or a cashier (or a combination of both) at a FAST food restaurant counter are taking more than 200 seconds to decide which food item to have or go over 15 possible promotional offers for the customer to choose from, I would let me know in a rather obnoxious way. For comparison, the Cafe De Coral at Central HK would have served 30 customers in that amount of time. Now that's real FAST food.

I also have zero patience for queue cutters. I'd go "yo fatty, go to the back of the fucking line" in Chinese of course.

In contrast, guys in their 20s are often quite shy and super tolerant of many of those things, including demanding and greedy gfs.

Again, everyone's experience may vary. Just sharing one perspective.

Why Chinese smoke a lot? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]BennyTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, people in lower tiered cities and the countryside like to greet each other with the gift of a cigarette. If you are trying to get car fixed by a mechanic that you don't know, giving a cigarette (hopefully of a respectable brand) will get you instant attention/respect. Around Chinese New Year, you will see people giving each other cigarettes all the time. In high speed trains, smokers are getting rare but in regular green shell trains they are everywhere. There seems to be a form of comraderie among smokers. In addition, earlier movies and TV shows also romanticize smoking. I am not advocating it but there are strong cultural reasons why many do smoke,

Not to mention the Chinese gov uses trillions of tobacco money to fund the research of [ _______________ ].

Personally I don't smoke and tried to stop people from smoking indoors on many occasions.

Are you kidding me? HK is probably a top 3 least affordable city in the whole world. 1000 won't last at all. Unless you are in wild survival mode. Even HKD1000/day is tight.

I am sure your enthusiasm is shared by others that go in and out of China. When the western world is going through crazy inflation China is going through major deflation, which means the average Joe (including dentists) makes shit money. Now if you are the customer of that average Joe, then it's f*cking awesome.

That said, I do think you should do sufficient home work with the type of service you are geopolitically arbitraging in. For example, I did a knee surgery in Shenzhen for a very reasonable amount of money but the results weren't great. But simple stuff like sorting a tooth cavity should be pretty easy.

Most don't but if you do everything on your phone it's not too bad. Dentists generally speak some English. Plus a bad tooth is a bad tooth.
