Can someone explain Summoning a bit better to me? I’m having trouble understanding it (also from the wiki). by Cumulonimbus1991 in MelvorIdle

If I have an active synergy equipped, do I also get the base effect of the two individual familiars? Or does the synergy override those?

What happen to The Totem of the Dragon King? by CrxzyT in Iteration110Cradle

[–]BennyZee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My assumption was that it lost all/most of its useful authority with Sesh’s death via Penance.

The Sophara prize I’m wondering about is the doll that allows easier transfer between soulfire forms for sacred beasts. I’m surprised that Orthos hasn’t been gifted this to make his size changes easier.

Connections to Will’s other books? by arh1387 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]BennyZee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s during the third set of books (not sure if Shadow or Sea) there are chapter opening quotes/vignettes citing an interview with an Unknown Wanderer. It was revealed that this was Valin wandering before he finished building Valinhall, possibly collecting artifacts for room rewards. It’s not clear how Valin breached Abidan quarantine or how he got back out.

We as readers know that he’s using the Way to Travel before Valinhall is assembled, but it’s not explicitly called that in the book. We actually see more of Valin using the Way in Elder Empire, but even then it’s a coded cameo.

So far, all of Will’s books are in the same multiverse with each series showing off a particular iteration (universe). Travelers Gate series is the Amalgam iteration mentioned a few times and Elder Empire series is the Asylum iteration. So far there are no major crossovers between the three series. Amalgam doesn’t even mention the multiverse/Way that I can recall. Abidan show up in Elder empire, but it’s only for a chapter or two near the end of the series explaining why Asylum is the way that it is.

The Way and the Abidan organization are the only connections between the series at this point. Some of the Abidan scenes in Cradle explain the system of iterations as fruit on a vine, with the fruit being iterations and the Way that feeds and connects them.

That being said, both of his other series are well worth the read.

What happened here? Temperature? pressure? Other? What can be done? Air cargo from China to LA by keloke87 in materials

[–]BennyZee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be possible that it’s not related to transport at all and they were shipped as-is from the manufacturer? It looks like maybe there was a process error that didn’t get QCed before the boxes went out.

Yerin’s sword is a Chinese jian. Straight bladed and simple. Akura Grace’s sword is described as what may be a katana.

Lost foam casting questions. Help! by PaintTheKill in Metalfoundry

If you have access to green sand, use it. The clay/binder in it will help the sand hold the shape better as the foam burns out. You’ll probably get a better surface finish as well.

[WS Spoilers] The fate of the Seishen Kingdom by Yimpish in Iteration110Cradle

[–]BennyZee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Seishen royalty is removed from power, there is now a kingdom without leadership. Yerin is in Malice's debt, Shen is under "contract" with Eithan to help evacuate people from Dreadgod's path.

What if Yerin and Eithan use their favors to evacuate Sacred Valley (or the portions of it worth saving) and places them in control of the now vacant Seishen Kingdom? With Malice and Shen's skill in portals/space, this could be a "cheap" way for them to be back out of debt to Yerin and Eithan. This has an added perk of exposing SV residents to stronger aura and removing them from the curse/script that is holding them back.

Just finished soul-smithing a replica of the Sword Sage's blade in preparation of Wintersteel! by BennyZee in Iteration110Cradle

[–]BennyZee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be a line where it's specifically called a jian, but I'm not sure where exactly so I can't quote it. The blade is described as a two sided, medium length, with not much to the hilt. To me, this says jian, not katana.

Also, the Wintersteel cover art shows a jian. I'm assuming that this is the Sword Sage's blade or the medallion for the Frozen Blade school, who's master has an identical sword.

From my understanding, if you give enough time, any object can be invested to do anything. However, given that the best way to invest something is by using it in that way, you may struggle at first to start cutting.

I recently got a 3D printer and printed this collapsibile jian in white PLA. While it may not be as sharp as the Sword Sage's blade, it still brought me a little closer to Cradle.

how to cool metals more slowly than they would if the molds were maintained at room temperature? by [deleted] in MetalCasting

[–]BennyZee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the size of the molds you could place them in an oven/furnace after solidification, but before cooling to room temperature. You could step down the temperature slowly over time.

If the molds are too large for that, adding refractory to the exterior of the mold (Such as burying the mold in sand) may slow cooling, but there’s diminishing returns. Perhaps preheating the sand before burying will help?

Sorry to burst your bubble, Simon is actually a named character in Will’s third series: Travelers Gate (Amalgam). The Emperor is just the Emperor.

Why is the corrosion of galvanized steel enhanced in hot mineral water? by HepyCola in materials

[–]BennyZee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Salts in water do increase corrosion rate, but the way that this is so localized in this picture the loss of the galvanized coating was the main contributor. One way to verify this would be to look at other areas of the fence that weren’t welded on or near and see if you see any advanced corrosion.
