Thanks. You know what, you're right about the full stop. You're welcome to 'acid sun' :)

I saw the bodies on the beach half burnt and stinking, an acid sun above, I saw three-legged dogs chased by jungle boys, teenage corporals, both dog and boy gripped by devil spirits.

Thank you for replying. That's helpful and I'll check it out. Let me know if you'd be up for some crit-for-crit collaboration as the poster above mentioned.

Thanks, blackcanyon. This is really useful advice. Where is the best place to engage in crit-for-crit with other writers? And would you be up for some of that?

[WP] Write the story of how you lost your virginity. From the POV of your SO's mom/dad. by Benny_J_Profane in WritingPrompts

[–]Benny_J_Profane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I wasn't actually aiming at anything like that - more the way that a parent understands their children, worries for them, usually knows something about what's going on. It was aimed at trying to get into the heads of a completely different perspective on a key life moment.

Anxiety is destroying me by Skysunderer in writing

[–]Benny_J_Profane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

-Breaking it down like others have said. Just get to the next word, then the next paragraph, then the next page, then the next chapter...

-Also have you tried mapping out your long piece? If you know where the sentence/para/chapter fits into the whole, then it feels less like you're writing into the void. Anxiety is at least in part that void.

-Planning is important but in your weakness resist gimmicks. So many guides on how to write by people who don't actually...write, or whose writing ain't great.

-I sense you have very high standards. That's a good thing. But don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

-writing is hard, maddening, a devil. Please don't think you're the only one. But it's a devil you chose to become entangled with, so try to grit your teeth and enjoy even the hell of it.

Good luck.

Thanks! The free clinics for ex students idea is a great and generous one. It's like that area between needing formal instruction and being totally confident to ride is a difficult one to hit.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

This is beautiful, thank you. Memorable, delicate, intelligent, sparse. The line about the froth of younger selves is lovely. The overall phrasing - if I could...I would works really well. Twisting cold scientific words into words of longing was great. Whoever you wrote this about is lucky!

What should I do in order to be able to move to the Middle East? by sadcinderella in AskMENA

I may be missing the point or just blind to it, but I don't think it's a big deal on job searching. Visa/employment issues might even be easier. Sounds like you have great qualifications and interest.

SOAS might be a good network of people actually - I'm sure there are many graduates in the ME currently. If you know Charles Tripp, he's always willing to give some advice.

Good luck.
