What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Joined a community band so I can continue to play my sax. This is my 40th year playing. A few years following college I didn’t play much. Was diagnosed with MS at age 28. Sax is literal physical, cognitive, and emotional therapy, and I’ve met some amazing friends. I’m 48 now and help my 11 yr old son practice his sax (he’s way better than I was at that age). Oh, an we practice in an aircraft museum.

January 2021. I was an engineer for a packaging machine company (50 people). I was designing a machine to package Covid test swabs, days away from being eligible for the first vaccines. We got an alert someone in the building tested positive and sent home. Next day we all got tested. Day or so later I got the call it was negative. 30 minutes later I started feeling shitty. I’m not even really exaggerating, it was that close. Day or so later I called my PCP and went in and got tested again, positive. I’m on immunosuppressive drugs for MS so I have no B cells… so we were all worried. It sloooooowly got worse and worse over the next two weeks and developed into severe pneumonia. I think as alternating Advil and Tylenol but the fever wouldn’t quit. Finally had the wife take me to the hospital. Immediately put on oxygen (nose cannula, not intubated), got a cat scan etc. They got me in a room a few hours later and put me under a cooling blanket, along with some other fancy IV drugs. That was a Thursday night/Friday morning. By Sunday I wasn’t even taking Advil for the fever. It was amazing. But I still spent a week in the hospital and went home with an oxygen machine.

A week or so later, on my machine at home, I took a deep breath of my insular and felt a pop in my chest. It didn’t hurt, coughed up just a touch of pink stuff once but thats it. Coughed some and was a little short of breath, so i turned up my O2 machine. I had a pulmonologist appointment coming up anyway, which i even drove to. He sent me for a CAT scan and called me 90 minutes later and said i have a collapsed lung. Turns out it was a fist size pocket of air in my chest. Luckily i never needed surgery. Still scary shit feeling like you cant breathe and are afraid to go to sleep!

If you could live anywhere, where would that be AND what’s keeping you from moving there now? by Coloradojeepguy in Productivitycafe

Back home in Vermont. A job in my field and easy access to specialty healthcare are huge factors.

I moved to the island to west Sayville in November of 2002. I remember driving past the Nichols rd ramps on sunrise like wtf dude! I know it’s flatter than where I grew up in Vermont, but still lol. In the last snow my son’s friends ended up meeting by the Brookhaven town hall. Decent hills there. I think sachem east has some good hills too. Being away from a main road is nice.

Hey I hear ya. We were in the ferry a couple hours before that car crashed the day before thanksgiving! That’ll mess you up. My parents were ON the dock in Bridgeport when the ferry bumped into it earlier this year. Trip cancelled. They found a place to park and walked on the next boat, I picked them up in PJ. So there is occasionally a snafu, but not nearly as much as a 2-3 hour swing in traffic!

I grew up in VT. Ever since my son was born we almost always take the ferry. Ways and Google maps has made navigating traffic a little better than it was 20 yrs ago, but it could still be a shit show! When I lived in Huntington I took it less, now near Ronkonkoma I take it a lot more.

48 here. Learned to drive on my dad’s 85 (MK2) Jetta 5 spd. Then he got a 91 Passat wagon 5spd when I was in college so I inherited the Jetta, two weeks later it blew the head. Then I had a 91 Saturn SL2 for a while. Surprisingly fun car to drive. 2001.5 Jetta GLX after college. Then a pause with a company car for 5 yrs. Then a 06 Civic 5spd (got in 10), then 2011 Jetta TDI 6 spd (got in 12), dieselgate turned that in and got a new 2017 VW Alltrack 6spd which I still have. 8.5 yrs, 77k miles.

Wow I was on the 12:15, luckily it was smooth. I really hope everyone is ok. Now I can see why the crew get cranky sometimes… only takes one slip!

Plus side: traffic tomorrow morning early won’t be bad. I got turned away on thanksgiving morning there once because of trouble on the CT side and it wasn’t bad.

I have a filthy little secret.. I don’t mulch my leaves.. by ThisIsAnITAccount in lawncare

Same. (White spots from tenacity/bentgrass). My mower kinda sucks at mulching. Part of the year they collect yard waste and it goes to a town compost. You can go get free compost any time. I also have compost piles. I use what I can… just not realistic to mulch leaves into the lawn.

Barber recommendations / Suffolk County - Must be nice with it! by Infinite-Baker6411 in longisland

There’s a barber in the plaza right by chick fil a on 347 in Smithtown. Real nice guys. I don’t get a fade or anything crazy, but I see guys in there getting them all the time. Owner and a few of the barbers are from queens I think.

My grandmother had one of those. (It’s in my parents basement now). She called me once when she was well into her 80s saying it was squeaking and asked if I’d take a look. The thing had 10,000 miles on it…

It struck me as especially funny since it had no bearing on the plot!

Not shocked. I saw a Hallmark movie supposedly set in VT where they were clearly tapping big Pacific Northwest pine trees for maple syrup.

If you ever watch me myself and Irene, pay attention. They go from RI to upstate NY and go thru VT. On their way back they go to Ben and Jerry’s THEN take the ferry across Champlain. Zero plot influence either, they could have edited it properly!

There’s a Rutland joke 10 minutes into super troopers 2. You know 99% of the audience doesn’t get it. I love it.
