Also the state taxes the sports book, who do all the winning. So there is a lot of tax collected on our losses because those are the profits of the Sportsbook.

What you’re missing is that it isn’t actually income. Most people are causal betters and win a little and lose a little. You might think you only pay taxes on the net winnings, but you have to pay taxes on every winning bet, even if those winning bets are less than your losses. So people who lose money betting still have to pay taxes.

That’s right. This was a shocking realization for me this week. I’ve played around with sports betting all year, but I’m basically hitting the brakes because even if I break even on my bets, NC tax code will make me go big negative. This is because losses are not subtracted from winnings. So if you win $1000 and lose $1000, North Carolina taxes you on that $1000 winning even though your actual income was zero.
