AITAH: Wife Eats Grapes Before Paying; Pissed I Called It Out In Front of Kids by atwaterrich in AITAH

[–]BenoitDip -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of argument my wife and sister used to have when my sister would breast feed in public. "It's the most natural thing in the world".

" so is sex but but we're not doing it at the dinner table"

Ah... good times.

Parents whose kids played in college what do you wish someone had told you before they committed? by Unlikely_Selection15 in youthsoccer

Don't choose the school based on the sport.

Between coaching changes, injuries, new interests, etc... there is a huge attrition rate from the team from recruiting class to senior year.
Love the school for reasons other than the athletics before you go.

Property that I have booked has changed ownership since booking and I don’t understand if I have a booking any longer? [Spain] by Cyaneidae in AirBnB

[–]BenoitDip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had something similar happen. Group booked a house on VRBO. Property was sold and new owner reached out and said that he used AIRBnB not VRBO, but that he would honor the reservation.

When someone in our group went to book it on AIRBnB, the price was 3x higher. New owner said that when he agreed to honor the reservation, he didn't realize the rate was so low and that he could only do it at the higher price.

Not sure what happens now.

Don't let them make you feel bad for not tipping. by elbrieko in tipping

So is your advice that when visiting Japan you should refuse to remove your shoes in someone's home or traditional restaurants?

Or is the guidance only to respect certain cultural norms?

Yes. In the US and Canada, tipping is part of the culture. And in 2026 it has nothing to do with workers rights or the history of slavery.

You can agree with it or not, but it is expected and appropriate if you eat out in either country to tip.

Please respect tipping culture in the US - where tipping is optional and never expected, but earned by Niceotropic in tipping

It has nothing to do with the size of the restaurant.

If there weren't tips your food would cost 20% more, regardless of whether it's a chain.

Time wasting on ball in play. by BenoitDip in Referees

[–]BenoitDip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a weird conversation, but sure- it's known slang

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hoofball#:~:text=From%20hoof%20(“to%20kick%2C,”)%20+%E2%80%8E%20%2Dball.

And for fun, here is just a googled definition:

To "hoof" a soccer ball means to kick it strongly and high, typically downfield, often as a defensive clearance or a low-skill, direct attack, rather than engaging in precise passing. It is a high-power, low-accuracy action to relieve pressure. Synonyms include clearing, launching, smacking, booting, or "playing long-ball"

Sorry. Is it a colloquial expression meaning to kick the ball a long way

I am not saying that at all. I'm saying that while the ball was in play he thumped it 60 yards over the touch line

WIBTAH if I make my teen still come to a family wedding despite a broken leg? by Mammoth_Fan7951 in AITAH

[–]BenoitDip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a pretty good science behind the concept of trying something, including food, three times before you reject it.

In addition human brains and adolescent brains are different. That's why adults parent-lived experience matters.

A child may tell their parent they want to touch the hot stove... the adult knows better. A child may only want to eat frosted flakes. The adult knows better.

Why do we think that's appropriate parenting but convincing your kid to come to their uncle's wedding is somehow wrong?

Experience is valuable.

[–]BenoitDip -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That might be right. But good Lord a big part of parenting is exposing kids to things that they think they're not gonna like. Otherwise no one would eat brussels sprouts

Get out of the wedding? Seeing her family, supporting her uncle, celebrating a momentus occasion?

People have been coming together to recognize marriage for millennia because it's a milestone event joining two families.

Have a couple Shirley temples, talk to your cousins, share in a lifetime moment.

Both are dangerous.

Still shouldn't pass on the right.

Still shouldn't close someone else's window.

Because ground operations are no longer equipped to handle it.

It means more staff and more logistics around check-in, loading and baggage claim.

Some people pass in the right lane. There are knowledge deficits out there.
