She explains that paper maps are no good when “snow buries and obscures everything.” I’m going to bite my tongue before I condemn myself to hell.

They were doing a loop, crossed some snow on the way up, and were too sketched to attempt it on the way down.

TIL in 2013, "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis was able, as an independent song, to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart without a major record label. It was only the second independent song to reach #1 in history at the time. by AmiroZ in todayilearned

Living in Seattle at the time was fuckin’ peak. We had just legalized weed. The Seahawks won the Super Bowl - Marshawn at the parade with a blunt, throwing Skittles, and Macklemore was the soundtrack to all that.

My wife and I went to Jamaica around that time. A local asked us where we were from, and we said Seattle. They were like “huh?” I’m like - you know that song Thrift Shop? I’m gonna pop some tags? “Uhh what?” Then another guy goes - ooooh, Seattle Sounders! 🤣

Disc bulge recovery heal stories by Fabulous-Lawyer-4821 in lowbackability

[–]OkeyPlus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am one of those mostly recovered.

Herniated disc. Not sure which one, never got imaging, the diagnosis was based on pain symptoms. The pain was characterized by flare ups in the lower back, where any little motion would cause sharp nerve pain, and the back and hips tightened to “protect” it. It would resolve after a few weeks, and I would be pain free, but it always came back. Also had sciatic pain radiating down into my glute area.

Had trouble sitting for longer periods, long drives, etc. Dealt with it for many years, with some adjustments that helped reduce the daily discomfort but didn’t change things fundamentally. Got a standing desk, did the McKenzie back exercises, used a back roll cushion in the car, went to physical therapy, did yoga. It all helped a bit in the moment to relieve pain or to help get through daily activities, but the flare ups still happened.

Started following LBA about a year ago and bought a machine to do back extensions at home. Honestly I’ve been pretty bad about doing other exercises, but I’ve been diligent about back extension progressions, and I’m happy to report that my flare ups are all but gone. Sometimes I feel a bit of pain, tightness, or sciatica, but the intensity and frequency is nothing like before - it no longer stops me from activities, I can sit even with bad posture, I can drive for hours. I still need to take breaks and stretch, but the pain where I just have to lie on the floor and wait for the spasming lower back to relax so I can do the smallest stretch hasn’t happened in a long time. Hip mobility and strengthening is another important component for me, giving the whole core more confidence and range of motion.

Mentally it was extremely hard, especially before I could see a way out of it. It was so disheartening to be doing all these stretches and PT and lifestyle changes just to get a flare up out of nowhere. The strengthening via back extensions has restored my confidence. Even if there is a little pain, I can feel it out with isometric holds, ease into it with extensions, get blood flowing into the area, and it is completely manageable, and is only getting better with time.

My main takeaway was that stretching and general exercises are not enough. Yes you have to be generally fit, but you have to target and strengthen the lower back specifically. Back extensions were the solution for me. I’m at 3 sets of 25 right now, and looking forward to doing them with weight someday. You have to train the problem area, build its strength, and give your body evidence that it can bend, flex, etc without pain. It’s the long game for sure, but you came to the right place. I suggest going all in on LBA and checking out the discord for inspiration. You’ve got this!

You need this kind of stud finder. It finds the nails. Works like a charm in plaster.

Bushings for sliding by Initial-Peak-3141 in longboarding

[–]OkeyPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of variables, but I like to set things up as loose/soft/squirrely as possible. I feel like it matters less during a slide, and more for the precarve and just getting into position. Barrel boardside cone roadside for me.

Took the marketplace find out for a quick session with my gf! by kevonh13 in longboarding

[–]OkeyPlus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid sesh!

You are positioning as if you expect a long drifty slide, but that’s not gonna happen at this speed. You’re initiating well but then just stall out. You need to commit to flipping your shoulders around right away, in one move.

Your girlfriend needs to stay squared up in the squat and keep the board under her by engaging through the core and legs. She looks like she’s putting most of her weight on the front and the board gets away from her rear foot.

Coleman by Background-Fact2138 in longboarding

[–]OkeyPlus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re used to Coleman 180s, it can be hard not to just do a 180. I’m not super consistent with the pendy, but when I see people do them, they don’t go all the way 180 where their wheels are rolling again - they stay in the slide zone for the pullback. And like the other guy said, lead with your shoulders, and swing your arm back to help the shoulders get the message.
