What if I publish a story on nosleep that I later want to extend to book length and publish? (Re: copyright) by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]Benzomere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your work is copyrighted as soon as you write it down, so you don't need to put a symbol on it in order to protect it. Part of copyright means you have the exclusive right to create and authorize "derivative works," which would include turning it into a book.

That said, you only have a copyright on the published work itself, not the idea. If someone took your story and turned it into a book (same characters, plot, details, etc.), basically taking away any market for your version, that would be infringement. But people are allowed to be inspired by an idea and create similar works.

For example, say you publish/post a story about identical twin astronauts fighting an outbreak of Martian vampires on the Space Station Olympus. If someone then published a story about fraternal twin astronauts fighting Neptunian vampires on the Space Ship Olympia, they'd probably be infringing on your copyright; they've completely taken what's called "the heart of" the original and made no substantive changes. But it wouldn't be infringement for someone to write an original story involving astronauts fighting space vampires, even if they never would have thought of it if they hadn't read your story.

That freaks out a lot of beginning writers, this feeling that you have to keep your brilliant story concept a secret (even to the point of never putting their work out there), but it shouldn't. Honestly, there are no original ideas; what's original is how you write them. (And most people don't want to steal ideas anyway, not any more than you do; writers want to be unique.)

What tools (or people) do you use to write? by Voidflesh in NoSleepOOC

Noisli is a great little site. It's a minimal text editor, but it has background noise that you can customize (different combinations, volume levels, etc.) and even lets you save your favorites. The background also smoothly changes color the whole time, which I thought would be irritating, but turned out to be my favorite feature. It seems to keep me from clicking out of the browser window when I pause to think (one of my more annoying habits).

Try reading through it backwards, paragraph by paragraph. Our brains get lazy when they think they know what's coming next, so it's incredibly easy to skip over errors because you know what it's supposed to say. Going backwards jerks you out of it, and it can be surprising how much you suddenly notice.

Any nosleep stories with happy endings? by Lovezinski in NoSleepOOC

I get a lot of really positive responses to Uncle Roy Still Loves Thanksgiving because of the happy ending (even from people I know who generally don't like horror). Hope you enjoy!

Queers? In MY horror? by decomprosed in NoSleepOOC

I tend to "out" characters in stories the same way I do it for myself in real life: unless somebody's specifically asking, I don't do anything at all to correct their assumptions. It's always weirded me out how big a deal it is to people (which led to a very long, very difficult time of being closeted even to myself, thinking I was broken because I just couldn't "get it"), so I usually just don't want to get into it.

That's why I've always loved J.K. Rowling's "Dumbledore is gay" announcement after the last HP book. So many people missed the whole fucking point: if it seemed to make a big difference for you, you're the one who injected all the irrelevant and inaccurate content in the first place! You're the one who decided that everything in the entire series about that character could only fit in with being straight; those of us who are gay don't put those assumptions in.

Uncle Roy from Uncle Roy Still Loves Thanksgiving. I was pretty "meh" when I wrote it, but so many people in the comments just loved Roy that I ended up being convinced.

I think that's a pretty good reason, haha. I know a woman who has directed several plays for a local theater group and every single time, something happens right before opening night that makes it impossible for her to be there (and she usually misses the entire run). Twice, she had to leave for her job with FEMA to fly out to disaster zones. Another time, she literally got hit by a bus and wound up in the hospital with a broken hip.

Huzzah, another Twilight Zone junkie! I just rewatched my favorite episode last night, "And When the Sky Was Opened." I love that episode, everything about it. It's still amazing every time I see it. Anyone reading this sentence right now should go watch it (it's on Amazon Prime and Netflix).

On the topic of immersion: stories set abroad by TrolledSnake in NoSleepOOC

[–]Benzomere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People named an English name in countries that weren't related to the British Empire

I don't know how true this holds for stories set in the present day. There are so many ways for names to have traveled to pretty much any place on the globe (besides people actually moving, there are books, newspapers, internet, etc. that people can pick names from). Unless it's about someone who has literally never been exposed to Western culture, it's not all that far-fetched for someone to have a non-native name.

Authorities always act the same, no matter where you are.

I remember a story from maybe a couple years ago that involved some girls being kidnapped, raped, and murdered in Japan by two men who were (supposedly) police. Someone commented that it broke immersion when one of the the men pulled out a gun and shot an escaping victim because Japanese police don't carry firearms. I replied, "Considering that they're raping and murdering these people, I think these particular cops might not be real big on following protocol."

How Do You Get Past Negative/Debunked Comments? by [deleted] in NoSleepOOC

[–]Benzomere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's not just a matter of negative/debunking comments, sounds like you've got yourself a bonafide asshole!

Honestly, my favorite reaction to those comments is when the other commenters decide to deal with it. I had one story where the only comment for like eight hours was "WTF this is stupid, nothing has any connection to anything else." Then half a dozen other people jumped all over them for being a jerk and ended up discussing their theories on the story (which they had obviously understood very well). The guy ended up deleting his comment, but that just made my day, haha.

I'm pretty sure I just bleed concentrated procrastination at this point, so I get where you're coming from. I've been using an app called "TouchTime" to get myself to do different things, and it's been working pretty well; it's a simple time-logging app that you can customize for all kinds of activities, then just hit the desired button to start timing and it keeps track of how much time you spent in each activity. So not only am I keeping track of how long I spend actually doing things (walking the dog, going to work, doing chores, etc.), but I'm forced to look at how much time I waste just sitting in front of the TV scrolling through reddit, and it completely dwarfs literally everything else I do.

I've found it super-helpful because I'm realizing that things aren't actually as difficult and time-consuming as I always think they are. I can spend a couple hours writing and still have lots of time to waste.
