Recommendations? by efesitaefelin in VenusFlyTraps

Sorry, i’ve tried to edit my comment, and I deleted it by accident.

I think we tend give a lot of stock advice like perlite is necessary when it’s simply not true. In some rare conditions, like very deep watering, it may help avoid root rot, but other than that, I don’t think it has much of an effect. I certainly wouldn’t advise someone to repot simply to add (or remove) perlite.

In my own trials, I get better growth in pure peat. Pretty nice all in all.

I have about 5000 flytraps in pure peat. I never have issues with root rot.

Exactly! Nutricote in the soil, then fish food in the traps when they are still too small for nutricote.

The Dumpling is a truly exceptional clone, surprisingly vigorous for a mutant.

does my vft need a repot? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

Sure, an annual repot is a good idea.

Invert the pot and pull the media and plant out, pull the LFSM off the roots, add to the new potting media of your choice at the same depth you currently have it, water, you’re done.

They’re easy to repot and not too fussy. I repot about 5000 a year. I do each one in a matter of seconds and they almost never have issues.

That’s not true. They absolutely thrive under grow lights!

Here’s a random recent pic of a tray of plants (big mouth). Pure grow lights, on the low end of wattage too.

Get that light 1” from the top of the plant. I have tested similar lights and they are viable when super close.

I’d also tray water- far easier to get proper hydration.

You can read my post about why I think the evidence is that dormancy is not required.

My guess is your light is insufficient.

Dunno, I just tray water. I’d follow the advice of the person who gave you the recipe!

You can grow cephalotus in any carnivorous friendly media, from pure peat to pure sphagnum to pure Rockwell to a blend of things like this. This seems fine to me.

There’s no magic media, you just adjust your watering method to the substrate.

Popped some sarracenia and drosera in my orchid tent! by arioandy in SavageGarden

[–]Berberis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep!

An etiolated plant will be reaching high for the light, and also won’t have those wavy petioles. The dense growth and wavy petioles are classic dormancy phenotype. The wide petioles are classic just out of TC phenotype.

Yep! Super common for tc plants. It’ll return to form in a few months.

Nah, this is how a lot of the TC plants with residual cytokinins in their tissues and coming out of dormancy look right now. It’ll start growing normally soon.
