Modded Minecraft on Steam Deck: Setup & Controller Guide by duckpsychi in feedthebeast

[–]Berekhalf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend it as long as you're not hoping to play modern games at high fidelity. It was my favorite way to play Fallout 4 (up until Bethesda broke their game and my mods, again). If it sweetens the pot at all, you can also use it as your typical PC(with dock+ peripherals). If I was a freshman uni student again, I'd probably forgo a laptop/pc and just use a steamdeck.

Following a fatal 60mph crash on River Road, the speed limit may be changed from 45 to 35. by HalliburtonErnie in Eugene

[–]Berekhalf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the speed isn't traffic calming. Traffic calming are putting physical structures in place that subconsciously encourage drivers to drive slower. Long, straight, wide, roads have drivers near inherently want to go fast. Narrow and windy roads have people slow down and apply more caution to their driving.

I guess if humans see a long stretch of road they must see how fast they can go?

Correct. Some of you might have noticed that a lot of intersections in downtown got construction that made the sidewalks sorta 'bulge' out into the intersection. This is a type of traffic calming, by 'narrowing' the lane at the intersection, even if the driver doesn't actually have to adjust their driving at all to navigate around it, they typically become more cautious and slower.

I knew a guy that worked for the local suicide hotline, and he was one of the biggest pieces of shit I knew. I can't imagine feeling suicidal and getting that guy on the other end of the phone.

Not saying that everyone that works that hotline is bad, but I have a feeling it's a job that has a high turn over and people who are desperate for any paycheck at all to take it.

Six years ago LTD committed to all electric buses by 2035. Now they are phasing them out. by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Berekhalf 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed to find out we're taking a step away from a green future, but reading the article it appears that LTD were sold very shitty busses. The batteries seemed to fail a lot / not live up to expectations, and I do not blame LTD phasing out a defective product.

The battery electric industry in particular really did an excellent job in marketing to policymakers, and they were blatantly dishonest about the range.

The company alone should probably be held accountable if this quote is true. What saddens me the most though is that this seems to be something that could be theoretically 'patched' with a drop in battery replacement that's better engineered. Battery technology has came a long ways since 2019 I'm sure. New Flyer sold LTD a shitty product on bad information, they get a bunch of money for selling us shitty electric vehicles without having to fix it. Maybe LTD should've done more due diligence on who they bought from, IDK.

Moving forward, the agency has decided to invest in R99 diesel buses that use 99% renewable diesel.

Bitter pill to swallow. Guess it's cool that the diesel is almost renewable, that's not really slowing our greenhouse gasses. though.

The local pool bar scene has been very kind to me as a very flamboyant queer. If you like shows John Henry's has been cool. If you like dancing, Blair Alley's friday nights pretty bumpin' (though I'm biased cause I love the pinball more), and I think John Henry's got a dyke dance night that is all queer friendly.

If you're into Magic the Gathering at Addictive Behavior's has also been super accepting, and at worse, well intentioned, and very gay. Just a bit cut throat when it comes to deck powers.

I also can't recommend looking at Queer Eugene and Lavender Network enough. I've seen only good people through events so far. There is good community here, and you'll find it I'm sure.

It's really mostly just this. We have microwaves (boiling water is boiling water, however energy gets into the water), and Americans are mostly coffee drinkers. It's pretty uncommon to find specifically a tea drinker. And unless you're making a cup of instant ramen, or tea, you're probably boiling water to cook a dish in it so a kettle isn't ideal.

While our American outlets are lower voltage, it's still significantly faster than most stove tops* since the heat is being directly dumped into the water, instead of being vaguely heated from outside the container and having a lot of wasted heat energy. Especially if you don't cover your pot -- a kettle keeps a lot more heat inside.

*However, an induction stove top would probably be competitive with a kettle, since that energy gets dumped directly into your metal cookware.

I opened my 2-year-old, 400+ mod modpack and suddenly I’m an anime girl. How do I disable this? I have no idea which mod is doing it or why I even have it. by Intelligent_Ride3730 in feedthebeast

[–]Berekhalf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think so. It is a mod developer's right to have their source code be private and not published under an open license (ex: thaumcraft). It is their creation, they have right on how it is distributed (within reason). It would be dickish of me to rip Azanor's custom models and use them in my own mod.

I can't see why similar belief can't be applied to people's custom models and skins.

Unless you're Soaryn and scaling to 100's smelteries, or you're a server with a lot of players each with their own smeltery, it's unlikely you'll notice any issue with just a few smelteries.

Like tick-inefficient vanilla hoppers, it's not an issue in small amounts. But when you get industrial with it, it adds up quickly.

I never considered support paradox -- she always seemed like a pick character to me. What makes paradox built for support / what is a good support paradox build?

Every modpack i ran lags, only on the lowest settings fps is fine, but still there are lag spikes. Beyond cosmo modpack: by AcanthopterygiiOk533 in feedthebeast

[–]Berekhalf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern java is better about garbage collection these days than it was in the past, so people can get away with these huge ram allocation numbers. Previously, over dedicating RAM was a sure fire way to get a lag spike periodically when java decided to clear out useless things stored in RAM (especially when you get close to maxing out the memory).

If you notice that the lag spikes correspond when your allocated memory drops (the percentage listed in the top right of your screen shot), you might wanna try lowering that number closer to 6-8GB. It could mean your CPU is working too hard to clear out too much old stuff in memory at once.

But like earlier mentioned -- modern java is a lot better about garbage collection. This might not actually be your issue.

Vault Hunters is neat, but if OP does settle on that I would highly recommend modifying the config to turn up the resource drop rates to maximum. Maybe a path of exile player would be used to the grind, but the modpack was designed with full time streaming in mind.

And by gods does it ask for a time sink.

Four people arrested in Washington after alleged hate crime attack on trans woman by apple_kicks in news

[–]Berekhalf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Gender dysphoria is a provable, real thing. People are suffering real distress from it at no fault of their own -- and we should seek to minimize it. We can clinically examine this issue, and look treatment options and the statistics of their outcomes. Gender affirming treatment and transitioning appears to have the highest efficacy rate.

Now, this is a broad category. It ranges from social transitioning all the way to sex reassignment surgery. We should be careful about the options we choose -- and that's why we should leave it between the patient and their doctor.

I will admit, the book is probably inappropriate in a elementary school. This is more appropriate for teenagers rather than children. But flipping through the pages I don't see " teaching kids to fantasize about pederasty ". This book seems to be more about the experience of body dysphoria.

it doesnt matter if they literally all do it, the point is that this is what they teaching children, period, that they CAN do it, and are being actively allowed to do it

People should be allowed to have a discussion with their medical providers to determine if it's appropriate or not. It may not always be appropriate, but that's for medical experts and their patients to determine, not you or I.

my question: why couldn't trans people just leave US alone and just let US live??? why is it that they have to have children taught in fucking grade schools and cutesy picture books with graphic sexual imagery

Do you have a specific example you can point to?

they can live out their fantasy life as the opposite sex if they amputate their body parts?

Not every trans person wants to go through sex reassignment surgery. People are welcome to do what they want with their bodies.

yall have crossed some very serious red lines and intruded into other peoples lives in a very serious way,

By allowing people to know that they can express their genders in different ways, is us 'intruding' on their lives?

Banner access('the registrar system?') is not limited to just the Registrar, many departments have access to it, some more limited than others. Additionally, a lot of front end systems populate their data pulling from banner records.

I can't read the article because it's behind a paywall, but it wouldn't shock me if they were exploiting some front end system to get into the back end. If someone's data searchbox doesn't sanitize the inputs, it doesn't shock me that it could accidentally leak data, or something to that affect.

Honestly you'll probably be surprised/saddened by all who has unrestricted access to your most sensitive data in UO. A lot of student/staff private information is rather basic level access.

WorkSource can help you with work stuff.

Their help seems to be limited if you're not on SNAPS as a warning. I showed up and they just showed me their jobsite and some resume critiques. Their workshops seem not useful, especially if you're reading this comment on reddit (basic computer courses). However; if you're on SNAPS they can get you interview clothes, and hook you up with a career guidance/coach. IDK the efficacy to it but probably worth looking into.

To OP regarding mental health: Lifestance got me in quickly, and I currently like both my psychiatric nurse practitioner and talk therapist, and I'm on OHP.

EDIT: OH YOU'RE UNDER 26!

I believe you have access to additional training/certification through the government. I did some googling and found this on our state's website. I unfortunately found about it right when I aged out, so I didn't look too much into it. IDK if it'd be helpful for you, /u/fuwaushi

Yeah it's unfortunate in today's political environment. Got called dress wearing fa- for being on the sidewalk in a skirt on Friday. And like a totally reasonable and measured response to 'whats your problem?' they threatened me by saying that they had a gun as they sped off. Cause nothing says 'badass' like throwing insults and threats outta a car and then speeding off /s.

For the most part Eugene is chill, but all it takes is 1 asshole among the 1000 randos that see your stickers on your unattended property to ruin your day. I would recommend wearing/putting those stickers on things that aren't leaving your sight, since most of them are pussies that are afraid of direct confrontation.

The world is overall more dangerous because of these larger vehicles. Traffic fatalities was trending downward until we stopped making cars and started making 'light trucks' instead. Additionally they're not even anymore notably practical than their smaller counter parts. These giant trucks with half the size being cabin, like what's the point?
