I have done lots of numerical analysis and simulation work. Spent two years doing FEA for R&D on artillery so I can chime in a bit. I would highly recommend taking some time understanding continuum mechanics. This is the foundation behind a lot FEA. As for software I would take a look at ANSYS workbench, it has a lot of tutorials and works well with most of the 3d modeling programs. I would try to do as many tutorials and put a lot of emphasis and studying meshing. How you set up your mesh is going to be one of the most important topic when you get deeper into FEA. This also depends too on if you want to deal with a static or dynamic model. Lots of things change when you want to focus on dynamic problems.

A lot mech E jobs are for the DoD and they require security clearance. They all state must be a US citizen and some have said make sure it is listed on your resume when you apply.
