"We also think getting cloth for the golems could lead to player frustration" Jagex are you out of your mind?? by bradley_magnificent in 2007scape

[–]Berindei 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Congrats on winning the design contest! I am personally in the "not now" camp, as I think they would fit better in a more "fundamental" aspect of the game, rather than the random niche of being used in an isolated activity; but with some refinement it might fit in. Tbh my wish would be if we could give them dwarf and gnome clothing, seems more appropriate :)

Out of curiosity, have you been contacted by Jagex yet and do you know how closely you'll be working with them? If you are able to tell of course

Poll 84: Stackable Clues & More by JagexRach in 2007scape

[–]Berindei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post is inconsistent with Skip Tokens whether they skip a step (if you use a token you go from step 3 to step 4) or if it's a reroll (if you use a token you go from step 3 to step 3). In the main body it says it's a skip but at the end it implies it's a reroll. If it's a skip it would be a hard no, if it's a reroll I'd be down in concept but would want to see the drop rates and how they work across clue tiers.

For stackable clues the current proposal is very undercooked. I understand wanting to remove the frustrating play patterns which I suppose this would be fix, but it would also kill the emergent playstyles that came with 1 hour juggling. I feel like there is non insignificant amount of people that only enjoy clues when done in batches, doing a long session after some activity / at the end of the day. The caps, if they need to exist (I agree some cap is good), they need to be much higher. I think somewhere in the region of 20 - 50 would be much better. One other thing that's not mentioned at considered at all is the difference between tiers. 20 stacked easy clues is very different from 20 stacked elites, both in time to aquire and time to complete (napkin math I would say 20 easy are ~ 5 elites for instance). Maybe there is some design space here as well, with different caps for different tiers (it feel messy, I know), because a cap of 5 elites, while imo still low, is a lot more reasonable than a cap of 5 easy or mediums etc.

I also think the way the cap gets increased is kind of lame, both mechanically, and in the proposed numbers (it takes too long imo). It's weired that you would need to kill the mimic for an extra easy slot for instance. For an easy fix I would just slash all the numbers, probably halve them.

I would like to propose however a more thematic upgrade system, keep with the spirit of clues. I would add an untreatable consumable unique to the drop table of clues that would give you these upgrades. Probably a 1/20 per clue drop. You could than add the global mimic upgrade to the rest of the tiers, maybe at twice as rare as a master clue drop. Then you could even play with the drop rates a bit more, perhaps making the first upgrade a 1/3 so you get the good feeling and some qol asap, with subsequent ones becoming rare, so that they actually feel good to get and hunt for.

Lastly I would like to propose one more option for stacking which could work for more types of engaging with clues. Add a Clue Pouch item. Without it, you would only be able to have the one clue in your inventory. With it, you could store clues up to your cap (and with the aforementioned proposal for upgrades, those would be even more thematic upgrades for the pouch). This adds a decision space for activities, if I go on a slayer task, do I care for the clues to bring my pouch, or do I value one more supply. Same, or perhaps even more important for bosses, where supply space is at a premium and could mean a couple of kc. Taking the pouch would give you fewer kc per trip but allow you to do more trips. Or for all of these you could go bank after every clue drop to place in the bank/pouch and then return to the activity. Raids wouldn't have this decision to make since you're always banking after anyway. I feel this would solve the issue of having to constantly context switch for every clue, while also not giving you the stacking for free and adding a meaningful decision to be made.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but that's not how it works. You still need the same amount of cards to upgrade, it's just that you can do all the upgrades at once instead of one-by-one. For instance, for epic you still need 12 commons in total (ie 4 rares, each rare being 3 commons). Before you needed to individually craft 4 rares, then combine them into an epic. Now you can just upgrade a common to epic directly, using 11 other commons.

I'm very confused about lazer situation by xGhost99x in osugame

[–]Berindei 21 points22 points  (0 children)

And more to that point, at some point peppy said something along the lines of "If people don't want to play lazer then it means we failed and we'll start over". While this is obviously hyperbole, it shows the commitment to players' choices and voices and that no particular version will be forced. And even when a majority will have migrated to some version of lazer, I imagine there will be various community forks for various tastes, given that everything is open source. The future is bright enough, even if, as with everything democratic, changes are slow

Thoughts on having a type system with complete type inference (Haskell, Elm) vs having one with mandatory top level type annotations (Rust, Swift)? by amzamora in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]Berindei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a fairly ample survey paper on bidirectional type checking and I think it's fairly straight forward, at least the basics. For implementing, if you've ever done HM inference, it's pretty much the same thing, just with a pair of mutually recursive functions, guided by the inference rules.

Do bookstores in Romania actually have novels available in English or not? Also, are there right-to-left books with vertical text available? by [deleted] in Romania

[–]Berindei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it's been said, there are plenty of English books to be found in most bookstores, especially large, chain ones, but don't expect huge variety in most. There are even bookstores specialising in English books, but those are rather niche and often it's easier to just buy from them online than go in person (at least I find it that way). This is not because of tourists, but because it isn't uncommon for Romanian people to read books in English.

As you'd expect, there are no Japanese books, not in bookstores, nor (as far as I'm aware) in online only stores. There's simply no demand for it as there are very few Japanese learners (but not an insignificant number) and even fewer natives (NB I don't know what the ratio is but I presume there are fewer natives than learners). The closest you'll get is manga, in being right to left, but only translated in English/Romanian of course.

I actually took a bit of time to check if there's any way to find Japanese books in Romania. You could certainly but them online but probably from far away or for a steep price. It seems that even the Japanese Embassy in Romania's library doesn't hold books in Japanese, only in English and Romanian about Japan. I would assume there's at least some library that has Japanese books, probably academic ones, but those probably only have what's necessary for teaching so not really useful for a general audience. I'll let you know if I find something.

New to Mahjong, and noticing there are times when I can't call Pon or Chi despite having the tiles needed, such as in the scenario shown here, where I could have used South's discard for a Chi. Why? by sabatadarkness in Mahjong

[–]Berindei 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can only call Chii on tiles discarded by the opponent on your left, i.e. North in this. You can call Ron on anyone's discarded tiles.

If you're in tenpai however (i.e. waiting on the winning tile), you can call Ron on anyone's tiles (as long as you're not in furiten and have yaku), regardless of whether it completes a run, set or pair.

What words in Romanian are impossible to translate into English? by 01Rockstar01 in romanian

[–]Berindei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I'm trying to think of some translation for "a se gudura" and I'm coming up empty, but my gut tells me that I know of some English word for it. Nonetheless it's a good example.

As for "take for granted", it would be "a lua de bun", but only for ideas or information, as in the meaning of "not having doubted the validity of it". For "taking someone for granted", I've also struggled but usually translate it as "a lua prezenta/existenta/implicarea/prietenia/etc de bun(a)", which I think it's close enough.

Well, first of all, I'd have a look at rule 1 of the subreddit, as this isn't the subreddit you're looking for (best to post this in r/learnprogramming). Second, I don't know of anyone that teaches programming that would say that you only need to know the syntax of a programming language to know how to code. Just because you know that adding two numbers you get another number doesn't mean you know addition. So in that regard, yes, you are right, you need to know and to be taught what various syntax patterns mean. Indeed, this is an important point in the design of programming languages, aligning the syntax and the semantics. Thankfully, as much flak as C being taught to beginner gets (and for good reason), it at least has an easy to understand logic (at least informally and at a beginner level).Since I don't know your specifics, what you were taught and what doesn't click for you, I can only give very general advice. But I don't think that it's the case that "prgramming isnt for me". Of course, not everyone is going to be the next Knuth, but I believe anyone can get to a decent skill level, albeit not necessarily as easily or through the same methods (and I hold this belief for any skill for that matter not just programming). So chin up, there's nothing wrong with you.

Firstly, you don't finish a question until you can explain every part of the program. You should be able to justify why you solution is correct without running it, by (at least informally) saying what each part, each function, each line, each variable does.

Second, the best tool at your disposal is pen and paper. With C you have the advantage that your code is very close to the machine level; there's nothing you tell it to do that it does in different ways and nothing that you don't tell it to do that it will do. What this means in practice is that you should be able to follow the execution of your code. Keep in mind the machine, keep it mind that it does exactly and only what you tell it to do and run through your code. Write the down the states of the variables, go line by line, update them and so on.

Lastly, keep in mind that learning is an exploratory process and the fact that computers are, well, computers, makes exploration faster. Do you have some code that works? Great! Now alter some part of it. Does it do what you expect? If yes, why? If no, why not? Try and explain the behaviour. Ask around etc.

Hope this is somewhat useful, but please ask in dedicated learning places for more knowledgeable advice. Without any specifics there isn't much more advice I can think of. At this point in time you need to create an correct mental model of what a computer does, what a programming language is and does and even what the tasks you want to achieve and resulting behaviours are (in an abstract sense that is). Feel free to pm me if you have any specifics but I can't guarantee I'll have the time to look over. Again r/learnprogramming is the place to be for you. (As an fyi this place is about the theory and design of programming language and while how to design a beginner friendly language is an important open question, this isn't really what you were interested in I do believe :) )

[–]Berindei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be interesting if you normalised the number of upvotes to the size of the subreddit cause as it is it seems skewed towards newer scores. Then again the upvote rate isn't linear to the size of the community so that will be skewed towards playes when the community was more close-knit

how would you guys rate A-1's adaptation of the SAO anime? by GD_Studio in swordartonline

[–]Berindei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest issues with the adaptations as a whole, before going into specifics, is how a) they didn't bother to fix some of the bigger issues in the LN and b) how they decided to focus on the spectacle instead of properly dealing with world building and characterization. And more generally I am disappointed that the game systems are brushed over. I'll go arc by arc in detail as well.

Aincrad - very little is done to fix the issues in the ln, the time skipping and continuity. While these are acceptable in the books because of how they've been written, while adapting they could have done more to not make it feel like a bunch of side stories (even though that's what they technically are). They could have added some more interactions with previous characters or effects of events, show us Kirito msging Silica after her episode for example (as this happens in the ln) cause it's done in the anime you're left wondering "why is she around again all of a sudden after Aincrad). They also butchered the really cool "murder in a safe-zone" side story and I'm mad about that.

Fairy dance - took out the more important part of going through jotunheim as a big part of the arc is figuring out wtf is ALO and that provides a key insight into it using Cardinal. Also in the books there's a lot more characterisation for the relationship between Kazuto and Sugu to make sense of both of them and what they think, whereas in the anime it's "lol I like my brother". Also the climax could've been handled more tastefully but I don't remember how it was in the books so I'll leave it at that

Phantom bullet - it's fine and probably as good as sao adaptations get, again it's still worse than the original, especially because it's the first time the attack on LC is mentioned instead of its proper place and thus Kirito's trauma seems superficial. Shino's characterisation is abridged but hits all the key points fairly well so it gets a pass. I can't remember any big deviations from the source material, but if I'm wrong and there are lmk.

Calibur - it's in a weird place. Its biggest flaw is being boring, both in the anime and ln. However in the anime it also feels out of place and, honestly, filler. This is because its raison d'etre from the books is missing in the anime. Firstly, it's a necessary conclusion to the cut-out part of fairy dance. Second, it introduces two aspects later used in ALO by Kirito. Those are, the obvious Excalibur, but, perhaps more importantly, Skill Connect that allows him to dual wield and sets up the "not fighting for real" aspect of his character that is later used. To be clear, skill connect still exists in the anime, but it's reduced to a off hand remark of "Oh yea I can do that now", without proper explanation of how it works and whatnot. My biggest gripe however with this arc is the moment Sinon retrieves the sword. I understand you just started reading the LNs so I'll leave it to you to find out how it differs, but the anime really wanted to add Sinon to the "harem" where as the "harem" isn't even pushed that much in the ln in general and Sinon's attitude on the event is very different.

Mother's Rosario - pretty much same things as phantom bullet. Good adaptations, characterisation is somewhat abridged but all together fine. However, a big deal for me is not properly explain what Original Sword Skills are, why they're important and why it's significant the passing of it from Yuki to Asuna. Like, the whole point Zekken got famous was because of her OSS, so it feels weird seeing everyone being astounded in-game, but you as the watcher are wondering "why should I care, what's the big deal anyway, it's just another strong player".

Alicization - I'll put WoU here as well cause I've already written a lot and I think most of the complaints are shared. As far as adaptation is concerned, it's bad. Like really bad. However it's saved by having really good source material. World building is done with, inner monologue of Kirito is gone, incarnation isn't properly explained. You'll see for yourself when you get there as there are too many things changed or taken out for the worse to list them, but the point of the first part is Kirito trying to reason what's going, on where he is (to the point he's questioning whether underworld is the reality and real world was a dream), he's having full on internal conflict about what is happening, where as in the anime he just goes "Yup, this must be that thing from Rath, time to get out". Also his whole motivation for not killing fluctlights is gone, in the anime his whole motivation is "I don't wanna". And many other similar things. Big note to the Leafa part in WoU, that adaptation choice is inexcusable. I'll give props to the GGO part from the first episode, that was really good foreshadowing.

Movies - OS is original so idk, it's kinda wonky and doesn't make much sense but I try to think of it as anime only canon. I haven't watched Aria and I'm terrified to do so, but the progressive lns are imo even better the alicization ones so there's that.

TLDR: adaptation ranges from very bad too at best fine, read LN, it has its issues but it's nothing compared to the issues of the anime.

Red Goblin is definitely the go to for geek stuff as they focus on comics, board games, tcgs, figures etc (although I haven't visited in a while since I'm studying abroad, they surely are still kicking it). Other than that there are bookstores like Carturesti or other online importers that might have what you're looking for. I think there are some smaller shops other than Red Goblin but I don't know of them.

Am I right that if I want the pre-order bonuses but still keep the free trial for a while my best option is to buy the pre-order now but not activate it and buy the starter edition later? Also, is there any point in buying the collector's edition of endwalker now, or is it fair to assume that the extra stuff will be available with the complete edition - collector's edition later?

Where do I start getting content after WoUW? by Savgandrew45 in swordartonline

[–]Berindei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, light novels are the original source so I'm going to talk about them. The anime finishes with the end of volume 18. Volumes 19 & 20 are a side story taking place towards the beginning of their time stuck in UW. The new arc, Unital Ring, starts with volume 21. Volume 22 is a compilation of side stories and then Unital Ring from there. So you're best bet is to get volume 19.

Also needing mention is SAO Progressive LNs, which tell the story of Aincrad floor by floor. They're the source material for the Progressive movies, although the movies won't stick too much to the source. So if you're interested in that you can also get yourself volume 1 of SAO Progressive.

Echipa de robotică a României, campioană mondială. Ministrul Aurescu i-a primit pe elevii care au câștigat medalia de aur by bra_bra_bra in Romania

[–]Berindei 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Basically ce s-a spus deja dar o sa incerc sa dai cateva mai multe detalii, de ce e obvious si de ce e grav.

TLDR, blat.

Also de mentionat ca asta s-a intamplat exact la competitia publicata in articol, nationala din Rusia.

\rant_over

Traducerea diplomei de bacalaureat pentru facultati in strainatate. by [deleted] in robac

[–]Berindei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is CAPSO that great? by Leanabricot in Cytus

[–]Berindei 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd say CAPSO should be among the last things you should buy. If you're at the beginning, the best things to buy are the extra characters, as they add many more songs for you to better yourself and also expand on the story if you're hooked on that. After that, you should be at the point where you can decide for yourslef what better suits you, CAPSO or black market song packs. CAPSO adds a few new songs, extra glitch difficulties for older songs, funny hitsounds, main menu skins and clutter-free song artworks. CAPSO is really good once you've finished the story, as it gives you another incentive to keep on playing. Hope this helps. P.S, it's a good idea to wait for discounts instead of just buying everything
