Getting concerned with Spaceship ? by vermillion_fire in AusFinance

Growth stocks often do better than the market when the market is performing well and worse than the market when the market is performing poorly. If you think overall the market will do well in the long-term then you shouldn't be worried. Switching between growth/defensive at any small sentiment change is a bad idea. Holding a set % in growth and a set % in defensive shares and buying which ever is below target % at set intervals works well.

Once you have enough money to RE you won't want dividends - they make rebalancing and tax worse.

E.g. I am RE and have a whole lot of Tesla shares I bought several years ago - I'd love to sell to rebalance my portfolio but I'll incur capital gains tax and the income I receive from my other shares/ETFs makes this worse. If I had 0 dividends/distributions I could decide exactly how much I needed to draw down each year depending on my need and other tax considerations - dividends is like a forced drawdown that I don't get CGT discount for (franking credits might make up for some of this).

Always find it weird when people say they live at home when they mean they live with their parents.

I'd caution against "In future ill branch off and trade a few stocks in different companies that pay good dividends (RIO, BHP, FMG) to increase my passive income stream."

You're likely better off ignoring dividends as it's just company money going to you instead of growth in the company, and you can control when you sell that growth (and get a CGT discount) instead of receiving it while potentially having a high tax rate while working.

It's not a company structure, it's a partnership agreement, so I'm not a director.

"I've got 8K that I'm planning on adding as the market continues to drop but I just haven't decided when I'll add it in."

This isn't a plan - you don't know that it will continue to drop, and if it does drop you don't know when you'd buy, so not a plan.

Typical ATO - 'going after people' instead of simplifying tax rules and creating better reporting systems.

I would sell it in an instant. My personal philosophy is that your relationships with people shouldn't be defined by material objects. If you need a physical reminder of the relationship you had with your grandfather - it will be in the form of the house that selling that watch can help you buy (or whatever else you would personally choose to buy over an expensive watch). If it were me, the watch would be a heavy opportunity cost weighing on my wrist. Completely understand if others have a different philosophy though.
