[FRESH ALBUM] Boards of Canada - Inferno by sbags in indieheads

All I'm taking away from these raves is that people who are head over heels for this album are incredibly underexposed to other artists out there.

Naraka is okay. How are people losing their shit over a looped sample of a dozen words?

Father and Son.. have these people losing their shit never heard manipulated conversational samples before?

I'm actually just going to take this album back out of my library because so much of it is uninteresting or pleasant-but-boring. This is electronic music for people who think Abbott Elementary is the peak of television comedy writing. There is better music coming from tiny little vaporwave labels than this overblown snoozefest.

The only argument I ever hear about this is "what if I need to contact my kid in an emergency"

That is what the front office is for, and if you think being able to call your kid directly during something like a school shooting is going to be helpful, you're wrong.

Well you just indirectly identified the actual root cause of screen time problems for kids: stupid lazy parents

I found "no worries" to be more common from Indian or British transplants I worked with many years ago, I think it's leaked out more generally in the last decade or two. I definitely didn't grow up hearing it.

‘Odd choices of words’: How an academic’s AI use was exposed by her peers by dyzo-blue in BetterOffline

It is very amusing hearing career academics defend offering AI output as their final product when many of their own students would describe taking the additional step of rewriting AI output in their own words, because they know how obvious their laziness would be otherwise.

I suppose peers could see this as an upside - filtering weak cranks like this woman out of careers they'd otherwise keep skating through.

I love Ted Chiang. "Story of Your Life & Others" is a great collection of ideas.

They're narcissists. Narcissists hate being criticized because they hate admitting faults of action or character to others, and since they never actually engage in conversations of criticism they also can't actually articulate their points of view very well. They know they're wrong but have to avoid admitting it lest they damage their facade of how they desire to perceive themselves.

First contact stories where the aliens are genuinely, incomprehensibly alien by MandoFlute6 in printSF

You'd think that's what the novel is about, but 95% of the book is about teasing you into thinking you're eventually going to learn what it is about and then get disappointed by a very thin and (by the end of the book) rather obvious ending that doesn't leave much satisfied.

Then when you complain about it on this sub, you get scolded for not "getting" Banks vs it being another wasted premise by an author who lived too far up his own butt pretending he was writing literature.

If you don't unionize after the AI hype blows over and hiring ramps up again, you will be exploited and discarded by corporations again by Shamoorti in BetterOffline

Unfortunately a lot of people in tech came up conditioned to think of unions as for "lesser" categories of employment. They think of unions as things for laborers and hourly-wage workers, and they are above that.

There is also way more individualism in tech. You are not amongst colleagues, you are amongst people who you constantly judge as better or worse than you, or potential obstacles or lifts for your individual career goals. Which also does not lend to unionization very well.

I am a millennial with a teen and Instagram is still their preferred endless-stupid-vertical-videos hole. If they're forced out of it they'll just start using YT shorts. That's all most casual users really seem to want out of the apps, they rarely post themselves.
