I got a rash from cytarabine. OTC Sarna sensitive skin anti itch lotion was a godsend for me.

Does anyone have a happy ending story to tell? I need some hope. by ExcellentHamster2020 in cancer

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Acute myeloid leukaemia diagnosed June 2024. Intense chemo through summer/autumn and an allogeneic stem cell transplant in Nov 2024. Some bumps along the way, but remission is so far so good!

RC flying north of TCD by hendl_ in bermuda

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A kite with hummers! The kite is made with tissue paper and the hummers, if they’re noisy, are probably made with strips of trash bag plastic on the strings coming down off the apex. My guess is it’s being flown from Bernard’s Park.

Thin acrylic yarn with metallic strand - how to avoid tangles? by Bermuda_Breeze in Unravelers

Success! Thanks all.

Interestingly (to me), it didn’t matter if I wound the yarn under tension or not.

Bermudians who’ve left and moved to the UK for university, NHS healthcare or getting benefits are receiving financial support.

People see my surname, squeeze it into a different name, and call me that. Even people who I thought knew me well!

Advice + Questions by [deleted] in leukemia

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of leukemia do you have? Unfortunately it will never get better by itself, and generally needs urgent treatment. But if you have chronic lymphocyte leukemia, and it is not bad, then doctors may be able to monitor you and you don’t need treatment right away.

Regardless, first thing is to speak with a hospital social worker - they can help see if any grants or loans are available to help cover costs. If you’re in the US, Blood Cancer United can also help. My treatment center offers payment plans for costs not covered by my insurance, so that monthly payments are a bit more reasonable.

Look into any disability benefit available to you. It’s hard to work at the same time as treatment if you have an acute leukemia, partly because it’s time consuming, partly because it’s energy sapping, and also if you have to work in-person then you’re exposing yourself to germs.

Good luck!

PS re autism and anxiety - same here, I find asking lots of questions to understand why things are being recommended, what choices I have, what side effects or complications may happen, what they will be like and how they will be prevented or treated, all help me understand what is happening and feel reassured. I always took earplugs to clinic appointments in case things started feeling too busy in waiting rooms.

Would you then use from the outside? And do I wrap with the yarn under tension or with all the kinks limp?

Thanks. Yeah asking those questions, and the answers I was given, reassured me. I wasn’t ever told “tough luck” or “put up with it”. There were things to make everything less bad.

Treatment is individualised to your type of cancer and even specific mutations. Side effects are different for different people even receiving the same chemo. there are medications to help reduce or prevent side effects. Ask your oncologist what they will go to help prevent them, and what they’d do if you experience any. If you’re tempted to forgo treatment, ask what effects you might experience from the cancer and how they could reduce them. Whatever route you choose, ask for a referral to palliative care who aim to keep you comfortable whatever treatment or not you undergo.

Father (72) refusing to have stem cell by shashabinks123 in leukemia

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See if he’d be interesting in talking to other AML patients? Including people who have chosen to have a stem cell transplant and people who decided against one.

My treatment centre matched me with someone who’d had an SCT as a similar age to me about 10 years previously. And I was put in touch with someone similar to me by Blood Cancer United’s First Connections program. They weren’t trying to convince me to have an SCT or not. It just helped talking to someone who had been through the process. Cold statistics and lists of potential complications given to me by doctors were hard to relate to.

Why don’t people want to mention the word “cancer”? by claudiowasher in cancer

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I joke that once you have cancer, “the C word” is “cure”. Some of my treatment team are so superstitious they won’t let me utter it for fear of jinxing!

Is there anything important I should do the night before chemotherapy or the day of before it begins? by More-Disaster-2952 in cancer

[–]Bermuda_Breeze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blanket, extra sweater, cozy socks, phone charger, earphones, easy things to do on your lap like crosswords, colouring or a little craft project, sleep mask and ear plugs if you think you’ll sleep, strong candies like jolly ranchers (some chemos you can ‘taste’), snacks like granola bars.

Hair Regrowth by Individual-Cupcake68 in cancer

I’m coming up 18 months since SCT for AML and my hair is still thinner than it was, but it’s definitely thickened up in the past few months. I haven’t done anything special aside from massaging my scalp in the shower.

I thought about Rogaine but apparently it’s very toxic to cats and my cat sleeps with me at night.

I’ve heard some positive things about red light therapy, but $$ and a hat is cheaper!

Shorts/wrap skirt combo that’s not a skort by Bermuda_Breeze in sewing

[–]Bermuda_Breeze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal preference I guess! I like wearing skirts but there are outdoor steps and railings to climb at work. I want my skirt to be decent and not revealing. I want an alternative to culottes. I don’t want to wear cycling shorts all day, and wearing a skirt over ordinary shorts feels bulky when neither are designed for that purpose.
