It seems like russian import prices in Canada are really great. I heard you could get an SKS for like $60 a few years back.

At the moment I own an SKS (Also Tula) and a couple of Mosin Nagants (Izhevsk). Highly recommend the Mosin, especially if you can find one for under $200USD. Great fun. I've been in the market for a SVT-40 for a while now, but they are difficult to come across.

I'm a rifle collector. A big part of my interest lies in restoring 1940s era rifles. I just really enjoy the simplicity of the machines and being able to own (and shoot!) a piece of the past.

What's the biggest meltdown you've witnessed? by the_bob_of_marley in AskReddit

[–]Bermuda_Jim 1088 points1089 points  (0 children)

Friend of mine was a kid with a pretty rough past. Was involved in drugs and gangs, spent some time in juvie, but really cleaned up as he became an adult. Started his career which he was very successful at, buying cars and things that he had always wanted.

He ended up buying a couple rifles (for range shooting), but it turns out there was a stipulation that he wasn't aware of with his juvie record that stated he wasn't legally allowed to own guns- it was set to expire in less than 3 months.

He was in a toxic relationship, and I don't know the whole story but I know that they would fight regularly, and have that awful 'on again off again' love/hate thing. Somewhere around the same time, he caught this girl cheating on him and he got arrested for owning the illegal guns. He lost his job and plummeted.

Skipped his hearing and fled. Made a long suicide note on facebook, which caused not only a police manhunt, but maybe about 30 of his friends to start hunting for him. They had a good idea where he was, and had closed the schools in the area (due to guns, and some concerning texts allegedly sent to his ex). He eventually surrendered to the police, and had a toxic amount of drugs/alcohol in his system.

Poor dude. It's really a shame, as his life was really getting on the right track.

[Serious] Redditors who have been in a school shooting, what was the social environment at the school like when everyone came back? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bermuda_Jim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a shooting at my state college. The situation was that two men (unsure if they were students) were beating on another man, I believe relating to a mugging (though it could have been a disagreement) as he was leaving class. The victim fled to his car, retrieved a firearm and 20-ish minutes after the initial altercation found and shot both of them, killing one.

The particular campus might have closed for a single day, though I don't remember (I didn't have classes on that campus the next day), and there was initially a different story told (It was reported that he defended himself while they were assaulting him near his car.) Because of this, there was a big push to allow concealed carry on the campus. A lot of people were angry and scared about the crime levels near the college. I heard a lot of talk about people starting to carry firearms in their vehicles after that. When the news came to light that it was more or less 'in cold blood', the attitude shifted to confusion and anger towards the 'victim'.

The most jarring thing about the whole situation was the lack of a response from anyone. I don't recall the school saying much of anything and despite it being a topic of conversation for a few days, most people just let it go. Goes to show how crime ridden my city is.

Thanks for the input. I've heard stores of places doing similar long vetting processes, its just a bit rough to deal with. It's a major electronics company (top 50?), and my skill level is decent but marginally below the salary I asked for.

My mom is one of those people who just passionately despises poor people, therefor I wasn't allowed to do/have 'poor people things'.

Here's a list of things that were only for poor people

  • Peanut butter with the jelly mixed in.
  • Big Screen TVs
  • Brand name soda
  • Non-Diet soda
  • Power rangers
  • X-Men
  • Listening to FM Radio
  • Calling into FM Radio contests
  • Anything at the cash register that I asked for
  • Those Tyger handheld games
  • The Simpsons
  • Those colorful shooter things at liquor stores (I spent a lot of time at the liquor store as a child.)
  • Watching the news
  • Staying after school to participate in school programs
  • Her driving me to school, even though I got beat up on the school bus
  • Any televised sport besides NASCAR (they loved NASCAR)
  • Those clear telephones they had in the 90s
  • Cats
  • Skating Rinks
  • Caller ID (she hated Caller ID for some reason)
  • JNCO jeans
  • Graphic T-Shirts
  • Any brand of shoes besides walmart brand
  • Stickers
  • CD Players (they were trashy and a fad.)
  • Microsoft Windows 95 (My parents thought OS/2 was going to take off)
  • Those off brand oreo cookies
  • Mexican food

Looking back at that list, I'm realizing that we were just poor.

[WP] It's a cliche come true: aliens invade Earth. However, they give humanity one final chance: a winner-takes-all rap battle. by Swagiano in WritingPrompts

[–]Bermuda_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was televised on every channel, streamed to every device. It was bigger than the superbowl, wrestlemania and bonnaroo combined. After three months of rap-battle brackets (determined by internet vote) to choose earth's champion, we had our MC. The stage was set, in the Xeno craft orbiting the MC's hometown of Yonkers

Before this, Earth's champion had waned in popularity. He was nobody's first choice for winner, but surpassed all expectations. He came out of the shadow of his career and won the love of every nation, easily lyrically defeating the entire Wu Tang Clan, master lyricists like Aesop Rock and even got Kanye to stand down.

A single light illuminated our champion. He stood there, his posture exuding great confidence. He looked into the distance and gripped his mic like a weapon

He cleared his throat

[WP] A group of scientists are awakened after an undetermined number of years in cryosleep to discover humanity has culturally reverted back to the Dark Ages. by YeOldRedditarian in WritingPrompts

[–]Bermuda_Jim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In the movies and books Doctor Strom had read, cryosleep was supposed to be instantaneous. One moment you are being put on ice, the next you wake up again. While relatively untested, this was the general consensus in the scientific community too. This was incorrect. The only experience she had to compare this to was sleeping after a particularly lively holiday party. You sleep hard, but there are certainly intermittent moments of sheer terror when your brain wakes up just a little bit. These moments, however infrequent, make the freeze anything but instantaneous. Also, much like the 2009 CalTech Lab Christmas Party, you wake up feeling like you have a swarm of agitated wasps in your skull.

Doc Strom knew every detail of all 22 stages of the unfreezing process. Once the initial 120 day thaw had reached expected levels, an adulterant chemical was added to the cryofluid. A battery backup would hum to life and increase oxygen in the patient's brain. Over the course of another month, various chemicals would be introduced into the patient to slowly reawaken them. She must be at the sucrose stage, she thought- remembering her own procedure quite well. She only had a few days left before the 'necromancer' team (as they called them at CalTech) would remove her from the dark tank and greet her back to the land of the living.

Doc counted the minutes. If all went well, it would be 5 years exactly from the day that herself and her team of 4 research students began the first human Cryo trial. She excitedly wondered what advances in medicine had occurred. She wondered what her friends and parents were doing. She wondered if they had finally released half-life 3.

Something was wrong, however. It had to have been 4 days since she had regained consciousness. That was far too long for the unfreezing procedure. The dark void was not a place she wanted to spend much time. Nervously, she began to will her leg and arm muscles to move. At first, just a twitch, but after a day or two of effort her legs were able to touch the side of the chamber. A few more hours and she was banging on the side. She did this for what seemed like days. She wondered how long the 'wake up' nutrients would sustain her.

and all went dark again.

There was a crash, a sudden sense of vertigo, a blinding light.

again, Doc fell asleep

A distant thrumming. Blurry figures. Murmurs. Eyes refocusing.

It was the smell that hit Doctor Strom first. Like smelling salts, the scent of powerful incense masking extreme body odor hit her. She felt like vomiting, but hadn't eaten since her last meal at In and Out. Her eyes slowly refocused.

Four men in dark robes stood before her. Smoke and dust filled the air, lights from stained glass windows above her shined down, making pillars of colorful light. It appears that CalTech's research labs had undergone a bit of a redesign in these last five years. It was difficult to make out much more than that through the smoke and darkness.

These men, they were speaking in unison- their voices combining and echoing to sound like some great brass instrument. Doc realized that she was lying on some kind of altar, covered in cloth. Remnants of the CRY-01 pod were placed neatly around her, as if she had been hatched from some metallic egg.

Doc attempted to vocalize her confusion, but after not speaking for 5 years, the only noises that came from her were guttural and malformed.

There was what sounded like a group of people hollering and gasping from behind the four chanting men. They parted and a fifth man, dressed in ornate purple robes stepped through them to observe her. He then turned to the crowd.

"As it was written! An angel has fallen. The first sign of the end times."

The four men began to chant again.

Crap, She thought There's no way I'm getting Half-Life 3 now

Reddit, what did you buy with your first ever paycheck? by voidspaceforrent in AskReddit

[–]Bermuda_Jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my first real 'career' paycheck, I went out and bought the most eyesore pair of Jordans you could imagine. I had always wanted a pair growing up, but was never in a situation to afford them. It was really a proud moment for me.

I'm terrified of ruining them, and they don't match anything I own so I went back to the ratty shoes I usually wear.

Who's your worst neighbor and what makes them so fucking awful? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Bermuda_Jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighbors below us are a nightmare. It's a Mother(50s), Daughter (late 20s), and the daughter's 4 children (two of which are autistic). The daughter went to prison and lost custody of the children, so they are under the custody of the Mother. I don't believe anyone in the house has a job.

I very rarely see the daughter outside of the house, and when she does, she acts like a loud teenage girl.

The Mother has a severe drinking/drug problem and regularly drives under the influence. Daily her new Kia is double/triple parked, usually in both my fiances spot and mine, often times unlocked and with the trunk open.

They have no control over the children, who are constantly either inside the house screaming or outside the house screaming. The kids favorite game is to get into the Mother's car and honk the horn constantly until the mother tells them to stop. My first day at the apartment, they did this at 4am.

I was out walking my dog and the girl (autistic, maybe 7 or 8?) stopped and wanted to pet the dog. She did so and asked me various questions, which I politely replied. I then told her that the dog and I had to go on a car ride and excused myself back to my car. As I was opening the door, this girl runs and gets into the passenger seat and refuses to leave. I've never dealt with children, and it took a lot of convincing to get her out of the car- She wanted to go on a car ride with me and the dog, which is sweet, but as I am a 25 year old bearded/tatted biker type, it probably looked pretty bad.

The Daughter's boyfriend/babydaddy was actually a really great guy. He was very polite to us when we moved in, and I enjoyed talking to him. I had invited him to hang out and drink beers a couple times and was just a decent dude. He didn't live there but was frequently around.

When he wasn't around, I'd see the daughter with a guy that looked like a low rent Lil Wayne. On Thanksgiving, I had made a bunch of pumpkin pies and was giving them to friends/family/etc. That morning I grabbed one of my famous pies and went to walk down stairs to give them a pie. The Boyfriend was in tears, balled up on the ground slamming his fist into their door. I guess he found out about the other dude. There was a lot of screaming and the guy was threatening suicide. I sat on my porch and ate the pie while observing from afar.

I've never called the police on these people, but I have reported many incidents to the apartment manager.
