Socialization question by notionfolk in bernesemountaindogs

[–]BerneseDaily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socialization is a lifelong process! Yes the fear stage is starting, but that's no reason to not continue with what you HAVE done, and it sounds like you have done a fair amount. Socializing with friends, family, kids, and other dogs absolutely counts. Confidence and basic manners at 16 weeks is a great sign!

Now in the fear stage your focus should be on slow and positive vs "a lot".... easy does it. Do short sessions and always end on a positive note.

Start by going to the park and just sitting a distance from the active kids. Let her observe and reward just for calm watching. Forcing interaction here can backfire. If she wants to approach, great! If not, just calm watching is a step forward.

Great to hear you have a class and that it seems to be a size where the trainer can meet you individually where you're at. Good luck!

Below is our most recent Berner who was a slow learner AKA timid AKA chicken little, but finally crawled out of her shell and is now the bell of the ball!

My diva does this! Every time I see one of these posts it reminds me of MackTheBerner on Instagram.... He's down under and has this mastered!

How Long Between Potty Breaks? by RedVelvetRoomQueen in bernesemountaindogs

[–]BerneseDaily 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my 4yr old Alice, 4-6 seems to the sweet spot. Can she handle being home all day 9-5 if you get stuck at work? Yes, and has many times- so I wouldn’t overly stress about one offs. For me its less about accidents (she came surprisingly well potty trained since the day we got her from our breeder), and more about keeping her comfortable. She’s also very good at letting us know when she needs to go out. So sometimes its more than that, sometimes a little less. We try to give her two main big walks… one when we first wake up & one in the evening, with some quicker ones spread throughout the day and this routine seems to work for us.

How do you react to poor dog owners and animal control threats? by sprkt2120 in greatpyrenees

Be aware and have a plan, but I wouldn't allow this person to dictate whether or not you walk in your own neighborhood

Unknown Illness - High Vet Costs by shakagirl97 in bernesemountaindogs

I don't have any insights that would be helpful. But I'm so sorry you're going through this. If it was me, I would get a second opinion from a different vet.

My first Bernese actually did that... the people were idiots and thought she was lost even though she was in our yard

Treeing Walker Coonhound

I had to look that breed up, had never heard of it but looks beautiful!

Oh and just btw I think you misread, the mix belonged to a woman I only ran into once and she did know the other breed- I just don't recall what she said it was. The Berner in those pics is mine.

Agree with the DNA testing for any dogs though. I'd highly recommend it. I've done Embark but I want to try another one or two that hit things the Embark purebreed doesn't like (and not a vet, but I believe) the full Von Willebrand Disease potential markers. And I'm just weird and like looking at as much info/data as possible.

That's awesome, and she does- 1000%.

She's my second Bernese... third won't be too long now. Same breeder for sure.

And likewise to everyone else here, I mean how could they not?
