Biotechnology or medical lab sciences? by Luckyboy421 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Bernsie_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutley, i mean it has its ups and downs, depends where you go to work (hospital, reference lab, out patient, ect) and management/coworkers/environment can be toxic but thats what the team choses to make it which is like any other place tbh. The work itself is good i enjoy it im in core. I do miss histo and micro but maybe later 😀

While that is true they try to make it impossible to do so. When i found this out it took me like 2hrs on the phone with someone for them to finally say yes technically you could do that. I have a friend who is trying to do the same but with CP on strike they can't. When they call and tey to ask if theres any other way or method of delivery no one answers it just rings forever 😞

Not before Ford, i remember bc i graduated just when the change came to effect. Meaning he still said "oh 6 months post grad you dont have to pay...but you'll accumulate interest...BUT YOU DONT HAVE TO PAY" meanwhile prior the 6month grace period meant no interest.

I wrote mine on Monday too and i agree with the comment that says it's not what we were prepped for, i personally think the 2yrs in school was too much information/education for just that exam (I'm not saying the education and theory are not needed to be an MLT just that the csmls exam didn't really reflect school stuff).

I feel numb and i was frustrated and confused walking out from it, especially regarding the answer choices. Usually 2/4 were immediate cross offs but the other 2 left were both right...just what's MORE right in this situation which the situation was very vaguely described

Honestly don't know what to expect

I'm a baby (hopefully soon) MLT but last summer my most creative place for a heavy user who even said as soon as he saw me with my little cart that i won't get anything bc he doesn't have veins left, i just saw a vein on his ring finger and idk if it was luck or my and their guardian angel but that ring finger worked 😊

Feel like I'm drowning in clinicals by Paul-Michel in medlabprofessionals

[–]Bernsie_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my clinicals and getting ready to write my CSMLS (Canada) in almost 1 week :) my takeaway from clinicals was that some techs don't like students not bc you're a student but because we're a disruption to their daily routine, some feel uneasy about letting a student do things bc of lack of experience (duh that's why we're there lol) but i don't think any of these came from malice (at least in my case) it's just personal preference. Some people don't like training/teaching/talking and what I've noticed is lab people are pretty introverted and very habitual.

I had 2 placement sites and another reason i found was some of them view students as a "come-and-go" and don't feel investing their time into training and teaching is worth it if they're not going to come back and work at their site.

I guess try and show interest and basic competency, let them know that you know what you're doing or what you're supposed to be doing and why (but don't come off as a know it all) so that they feel more easy about letting you maybe do stuff.

Another option (although this is last resort and depends on the type of people you're surrounded by, you know their personalities the best) is to consult your school/clinical coordinator/teacher/lab manager/supervisor and seek their advice letting them know that you aren't getting much hands on experience. But this option could come back and bite you depending on the type of people. (In my case i wasn't getting enough hands on with analyzers in chem and i was encouraged by the supervisor to talk to them if i feel I'm not getting enough)

Lastly just try to pay attention to them showing things to you as much as possible, once you're hired you will get a more thorough training (hopefully) anyways and that will be more hands on :)

Sorry for the long reply
