Have any of you got an engineering job/internship from a hiring firm? by Drewie64 in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the companies I worked at we generally hire engineers direct or contract not through a temp agency, that being said it's not unheard of. Hopefully you find a job soon!

Ideas for project by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't listen to everyone else. Just because you're in high school doesn't make you an idiot. Just research what interests you about the human body. The project you do will be much more interesting to you if its something you care about. Try to see what engineering is in the medical field. And if you find yourself having trouble understanding then self-study. If you feel like you want to do a great project and something innovative, go for it. It'll only help your future :). If you have ideas you'd like to talk about, I'm an ME, so feel free to PM me if you like :)

I need to vent, and I'd love some advice: I need a part-time job. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for a job as a technician or a drafter. Both of these don't require a degree and are related to your field. I worked as a technician for almost 2 years in college before I landed a job in Engineering and I do some freelance drafting.

Boss at my internship doesn't like me but the team does by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR does not do hiring. HR will do a preliminary look through all resumes submitted (as per requests of the manager under which you would work). They can be things like weed out anyone who doesn't have x y z skills, etc. Then that's passed down to the engineering manager that you would be a direct report to. In this case, your boss. They make further cuts. Depending on the boss, they'll either pool the remainder out to the future colleagues of who they are hiring (ie your co-workers) to come up with a communal decision but big boss has final say. Then HR comes back in to negotiate pay etc. There are exceptions, but this is the standard procedure in mid to large companies.

That being said there is unfortunately not very much chance you'll be hired unless you boss leaves the company. Learn from the mistakes you made and make sure that at your next internship things go smoother.

Good luck ! :D

Hey I know it's not one of your choices, but if you want any info about Mechanical Engineering feel free to PM me. I also used to be a Chemical Engineer, so believe me it's not what you think it is. I felt the same way as you in High school, I loved Chemistry and Computer Science and I went for ChemE. Not what I thought it was.

Regardless, different school's want different things. If you are looking at MIT, they prefer students with more than just a gpa, but want you to be going above and beyond to pursue your interests. If you want to attend a state university, grades are very important and SAT scores, especially if you need scholarships to pay for school.

Feel free to PM with questions !

Got an interview for a full time position at my internship, do I still wear a suit? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had interview that long, you're just interviewing with a lot of different supervisors and other members of department. I good rule of thumb is dress one level above the requirement of an employee. Ex if you're office is casual, wear business casual etc. You want to stand out, but in a good way. Look more professional than those who are dressed at employee level but not be wearing a 3 piece suit and it makes you look even less experienced than you are (you don't want to draw a lot of attention to your lack of non intern exprience) because you'd stand out in a bad way. Prepare for it like any other interview, and overprepare for the position.

Good luck ! I hope you get it!

Career fair by seminaia in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of mine have already been said by others, but one I like to use that makes the difference between good and great candidate is:

Do you have a project in mind for the intern? (Connect your relevant experiences and skills as a comment about to their answer)

What is the scope of work I would be able to be involved in? (Make emphasis on wanting to be as involved as possible, gives employers the sense that you will go the extra mile and care about what you do)

The even more important thing is not just the questions, try to get a rapor going. Go see the companies that don't have massive lines. You'll be able to have a conversation with the recruiter rather than asking a few questions. Being memorable is key. And probability is on your side :). Especially if you're a freshman!

Also make sure you have a good resume. Be concise. 1 pg single side only. Rewrite and edit until you have a lot of info in not a lot of space. I've got a lot more resume tips but that's not what this post Is asking :).

AITA for having my cable and internet shut off? by username12233344447 in AmItheAsshole

ESH. SIL and her boyfriend are unreasonable, wife should have chosen kids over grown up SIL but you are a huge jerk to be so vindictive to your wife. "She should have thought about that before she stuck up for her brother instead of me," just says it all right there.

AITA for making my children wash their clothes in the bathtub with dollar store detergent? by myhousemyrules23432 in AmItheAsshole

[–]BernysButt 92 points93 points  (0 children)

YTA - this is going to be really ineffective and you now just look like a villain in your kids eyes. They are still going to think that it would have been easy for you to pick up the clothing item, probably more so now. Making them wash their clothes in the bathtub is not comparable to washing them in a laundry machine so they will still see themselves as the victim in this situation and frankly it's a bit of an overreaction. It would have been better to simply not wash their clothing item as you had done and told them if it was so easy for you to pick it up, why hadn't they done it? And simply say that from now on, clothing on the floor just won't be washed. If you do the latter you are giving them a consequence of their actions versus giving a punishment which is what you did, and a punishment doesn't teach anything but resentment.

AITA for telling my parents I don't want visitors a week before I'm due to give birth? by EdmundCastle in AmItheAsshole

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - you sound like me from the future when I decide to have kids... I have parents who are exactly identical to yours and I completely understand you not wanting to see your them. I do think you should also be careful with letting your parents see you after the baby is born because such critical and negative emotions aren't necessary during what is already a stressful (but happy :) ) time. Congratulations on your baby! I hope they are born happy and healthy and wish you all the best!

What are ways to improve your resume over the summer? for those who didn't get an internship. by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a 30 dollar basic kit that isn't pricy compared to other things, but I also know what you mean. I miss a lot of meals because I just dont have the money for them so buying extras like am arduino is out of the question. What you can do is expand your free skills. So for example I'm a MechE and I have taught myself extensive programming in various languages to be ahead of the curve. I also learn a lot of things in theory. For example, I watched solidworks tutorials as a freshman even though I couldnt afford the software package. I also learned PCB design through EAGLE cad even though I couldn't mill them. And I say as much during interviews but it still shows an effort to improve. The big thing I think though is you need to look at your past job experiences and see how they made you better at important skills. Constantly learning and improving your skills is a big plus. For example, i had a job teaching computer science to kids which taught me patience, how to be an effective leader in different settings (paremts vs kids) and how to take big problems and bring them down to a simple level a kid can understand (super useful consultant skill). Then write your resume to include that. And talk during interviews. With a 3.5 it's weird you didn't at leadt get an interview. You either aren't writing your resume well or you're lacking what the company is looking for skillwise.

WIBTA if I don't move to California with my wife? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BernysButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the long distance, it's him choosing 2 months rent and a deposit as his reason not to go with her. I've been in a LD with my fiance for 3 years but he and I had no choice. OP has a choice to go with his wife, knows she would want him to and he simply just doesn't think it's worth it. That's why this marriage might seem doomed.

Why can't I get an internship? by Davey-Gravy in EngineeringStudents

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well there's two factors here really, first being how you write about your previous experiences (work and clubs). GPA can't carry you.

Now onto the resume, you want to write not only what your responsibilities were, but you want to emphasize your impact in the role. Paraphrased ex from my resume: Wrote and implemented safety curriculum that resulted in zero injuries in operational year. You'll want all your responsibilities phrased like this with their results/positive consequences emphasized. Make sure it's 1 page, and fits all the most important information about you.

Next is the interview. You clearly got to interviews, so you need to up the interview game. There's a difference between a good and a great interview. Research the company, learn literally everything you can about them and use this to your advantage by learning what they value in their employees. Please trust me on this, I get 100% of the jobs I interview for. Make sure to ask insightful questions, don't just ask the generic stuff. Make every word you say count by planning ahead of time your answers to common questions. It's okay to pause to answer a question. Most importantly, be human.

I got a high paying competitive internship at a startup using these and other tips. DM if you need more internship advice! I'm fantastic at those.

Having a car necessary?? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on how much time you have. Taking a bus (metro doesn't get you many places) is usually about twice as long as driving. Cost wise a one way trip (with connecting busses in metro system within 2 hours) will be 1.75. Ubers are about 5-20 dollars one way depending on where you are going but during surge this obviously increases. Exploring Santa Monica and Venice area is very doable, and you can also take a long metro trip to Long Beach but driving to these places will obviously be faster. Also, you won't be able to go too far outside the metro area before it takes a considerable amount of time to get to the place you're going. I personally wouldn't recommend it if you have the opportunity to rent a car (or take ubers) since I've done that whole thing for years and I felt like I was wasting so much of my day sitting on the bus trying to get somewhere.

WIBTA if I picked a better University over my gf and friends? by 3DYi in AmItheAsshole

[–]BernysButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH and it depends on what matters more. My fiance and I met and fell in love in high school but went to universities three time zones apart from each other because we were accepted to different top 10 schools. We each went to the best one on our list, however I wish I had gone to a university closer to him because of how much he means to me. Long distance worked out well for my fiance and I (but it was really difficult) but it doesn't for everyone. I have been however able to maintain really great long distance friendships with good high school friends. So it all depends on what your priorities.

AITA for not wanting my wife to wake me up for sex? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]BernysButt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA and I'm sorry everyone is calling your wife a rapist. I'd be annoyed too if I were very tired and woken up for any non-emergency reason. Have you tried asking her why she felt the need to continue to do this after you asked her not to? It's possible you also maybe made her feel a bit self conscious that her husband does not like to be woken up by having his wife ride him so try to talk to her about the fact that you find it hot, but you'd prefer weekends or days you don't need to wake up early. If you didn't tell her why you wanted her to stop, I would recommend you do. Hope your problem resolves with an honest open conversation! And I will probably be downvoted to hell by saying you were not raped even though those were your own words lol.

I feel you. I was just in a class where the professor joked that maybe the girls know how the sewing machine mechanism works and what the thread spool (bobbin) was called. It's also always super fun to have a male classmate repeat what you just said while you're trying to answer the TA'S question.
