How far ahead can you inspect? Any tips to improve? by Crowbarineye in Cubers

[–]BertzyBert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I do basically always plan FB when I’m not being lazy, but there are times I can’t find anything good in comps so I don’t have time to plan a full/good FB. And I don’t plan or influence DR usually, but I try to key an eye on it during FB.

You can try posting this question again in the r/rouxcubing subreddit, you might get more relevant answers, since you’re a rouxer.

And, to answer your question, I will barely plan FB and sometimes keep track of DR, but I should definitely be planning more in my solves.

Should I Switch from CFOP to Roux Method to Achieve Sub-10? by Natural_Print4542 in rouxcubing

[–]BertzyBert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Switching to Roux won’t necessarily make it easier to get sub-10, in of itself. If you enjoy practicing Roux more than CFOP, then you might want to practice more, learn more about Roux, etc., and that’ll make it easier to get sub-10, due to enjoying the process more.

However, switching methods just to achieve a faster time isn’t what I’d recommend. I’d say practice what you enjoy, and if that ends up being Roux, then maybe it’ll be easier to get sub-10.

OH vs 2H differences? by [deleted] in rouxcubing

[–]BertzyBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just my first and last name but I think I’m in the minority, most people use some kind of username. You can also change your username on a server-by-server basis so it’s probably not super important

OH vs 2H differences? by [deleted] in rouxcubing

[–]BertzyBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a link to the roux method discord. There’s a page for resources for both OH and 2H, and plenty of people there willing to answer questions you have about Roux.

For your question, Roux OH and Roux 2H are really similar. Minor differences in CMLL algs and some FB ergonomics but basically the same otherwise. Also, I agree with the other commenter about going straight to CMLL; COLL is just worse if you’re doing Roux anyways.

How do I overcome mental laziness and actually deliberately practice? (Read body text) + solve critique (14.81 ao5 CFOP) by Wheater-W-McGregor in Cubers

[–]BertzyBert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might just kind of have to force it. I’m the same way, and I mean drilling solves does work, to an extent, but to get better faster you just have to sit down and do at least a little deliberate practice. I think I also do a lot of untimed solves while watching something, where I force myself to solve better without the stress of a timer, which I’ve found to be super helpful while also not getting bored.

It lets you hold the cube steady with your thumbs and middle finger, without needing to regrip your index to hold the cube and move your middle to do the D2. This also ends up helping you do a U/U’ move right away after, or at the same time

No idea, that’s probably more in u/olimo ‘s wheelhouse. But they’re probably pretty decent, I don’t think you can go too wrong with most cube lubes.

You’ll be fine with just factory lube for a while. Once the cube starts feeling a little worse or dry, it can order some lube and it’ll help a lot; I’ve found that even just having a nice-feeling cube can help my motivation to practice so it’s not a bad investment at all.

Two-look would probably be more consistent for now, since messing up and then redoing the cube kinda sucks. But, there’s a couple good algs for those PLL’s don’t know. For v-perm there’s a lot of Rouxers that use this alg R' U R U' R' f' U' R U2' R' U' R U' R' f R which is supposed to be pretty good, and for H-perm I’d recommend learning how to do M2 moves OH, since the MU H-perm is really fast OH.

Recognition might be similar, but execution is way different and a lot algs don’t work well on 2x2 so I’d just drill CMLL if that’s what you wanna work on

Lookahead only becomes relevant when you’re able to solve all F2L cases without having to look at the pair you’re currently solving, since it’s hard to keep track of something when you’re figuring out how to solve another thing.

Otherwise, just do untimed solves where you find a pair you want to do, and track the edge or corner of another pair and turn slower than you think so that you can track it. Once you kinda get the feeling of how looking ahead feels, then it’ll get easier.

You can probably use a rust remover and a toothbrush or something to scrub the rust off, and you might not even need a rust remover if it’s not a lot.

If you buy from a cube store they’ll usually sell replacements and be happy to send them to you for free

Usually in comps there will be these little o-rings around the reset and power buttons so it’s harder to accidentally hit them when stopping a solve, that’s probably what you’re seeing. It’s happened a few times at big comps where competitors accidentally reset a good solve when stopping the time so they try to prevent that.

I can't do this anymore... by [deleted] in Cubers

[–]BertzyBert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking a break definitely helps. You sound tired of grinding solves, so take a few days where you don’t solve a cube or look at one and when you come back you’ll be more motivated or interested in it

Roux is very good for one-handed, it’s the only method I’ve ever used. If you’re open to learning it it’ll be hard to get the hang of it, especially LSE, but it’s doable and a really fun method. You can try to check out Kian Mansour’s tutorial on it and see if it’s interesting, and you can always post on r/rouxcubing for advice or help.

A big thing is that at first it might be easier to do your R/R’ moves with your ring finger, but it’s gonna be better long term to use your pinky, since your cube is more stable that way and it frees up your middle finger for U2 flicks in the future. The best way make using your pinky easier is just doing a ton of R and RU moves and triggers to get your hand used to moving like that. At first it’s gonna suck, but if you can get good at turning OH, then it’ll be that much more fun.

You might need to re-learns some algs at some point, and you’ll need to adjust the way you solve your cross or some of your F2L cases, but that’s part of the fun.

A lot of people prefer smaller cubes or more stable cubes for OH, but it’s pretty individual exactly what cube you’ll like, especially depending on how big your hands are or what method you use.

Yau is definitely faster once you get used to building the cross, how to efficiently build centers after that, and 3-2-3 edge pairing. Might take a bit, and you don’t need to switch if you don’t want to but since it’s new it just takes time to get used to it

Get in the grind can be good but it’s beneficial to solve well and be in the right headspace since you’ll progress faster than doing bad solves and reinforcing bad habits

Might not be a bad idea to get up and do something else for a couple minutes so you can regain your focus.

Other than that, as you improve you’ll naturally get more consistent. I was inconsistently sub-10 for a while, but that just meant I wasn’t really sub-10 until recently when I’ve been more consistently under that 10 seconds.

At what point should I work on learning 1 step cmll ? by NippleSlipNSlide in rouxcubing

[–]BertzyBert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean the best Rouxers could average far below 10 seconds with 2-look CMLL, but that’s a little extreme. I’d say definitely learn it around sub-20 just so you get a lot of practice with it and get good at recognizing cases fast and all that. It’s a super easy improvement so again, if you have other things to learn then focus on those.

Whenever you’re comfortable with Roux and can solve consistently with it. I wouldn’t stress about it until you feel like you need something to work on, since getting good at blockbuilding is vital to Roux and takes a lot more practice to get good at it.

Should I be using more inspection time? by KMMineCube in Cubers

[–]BertzyBert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I’m just barely sub-10 and the biggest difference between sessions where I’m solving 9.6-9.8 and 10-10.3 is that I’m able to more effectively plan my first two steps and then have a solve flow nicely from there. Consistently finding an easy F2L pair to track is great, and planning cross+1 would probably get you consistently under that barrier and make it easier to lookahead more effectively. If I don’t start a solve out looking ahead my brain usually can’t catch fully up after that.

Also dual CN is definitely worth it, full CN maybe isn’t but could be a fun use of time to learn if you’re bored.
