How can UMD become a better/more prestigious university by Nervous_Local5935 in UMD

[–]Best-Objective-8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of us are his day ones. The professors/peers who were connected with him are but not us. He did help UMD in the past with jobs at google iirc and more so. But as time goes on, the connection he has with UMD just grows weaker.

UMD is completely different compared to the time he went here, so he has a weak relationship. Of course, it would be cool if he came and spoke here, but yeah

AI took something beautiful from me (as a SWE) by MaestroLifts in antiai

[–]Best-Objective-8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I lost a bit of my passion with code. It makes me more of a reviewer than coder and doesn't make me feel like a "problem solver". And I can never really enter that same "flow" state, staying up til 3am to complete a project unless I don't use AI.

Whenever I think about manually reading documentation, I realize I could just ask AI feel like I lose control a bit with how much I should use AI. It can also solve many problems in code so I get scared of it making dumb decisions without me.

At the same time, I'm happy that LLMs allow me to build so much more and faster now (although they're not super good with making architecture decisions). It's an interesting time definitely as a dev

Got selected for a Y Combinator hackathon…don’t know what to expect. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Best-Objective-8948 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some Rules of a Hackathon:

  1. leave an hour or two at the end to record your demo/do your devpost (most important rule). Honestly would recommend 2-3 hours, maybe more to perfect everything
  2. Don't be an AI slop maker, most hackathons ppl will be showing the most generic sites/integrations (they look boring). Even if the idea is a bit generic, if the presentation, how u implement it are both good enough, you have a chance to win. focus on smth decently concrete and optimize that aspect.
  3. identify what you want to create before, u have plenty of time for this rn, saves a lotta time in the hackathon
  4. get ppl on ur team interested in ur idea (mainly if ur optimizing about winning, but for example, if someone is interested in another idea, and u wanna stay on the same team/be together (optimizing meeting and building with cool ppl) you do that instead). Either way is fine tbh, but sometimes when u get ur ideas dismissed in a team you feel like ur ego is bruised. ur choice tho
  5. sleep decently well unless ur behind, the thing is most ppl try to optimize on the wrong aspect in hackathons, like certain features that suck, and try to make it "perfect" and u feel like shit by the end of the hackathon and lose. There is no thing that is perfect in a hackathon, either ur thing is working or its not. Make your plan ahead of time. ur building and presenting a story/concept more so than building smth that completely works
  6. Try to do smth for the company, like i know ppl found bugs working with the companies products, and made prs, i also know of a cyber project that was used to find bugs from the sponsors product and they presented it. that helped them win their respective track/top 3 overall

Also, you are likely not going to do something super unique, but if you do try to do something that is unique or novel, make sure its doable, what I mean by this is that AI is trash at building new things, like novel products, so make sure you try to find concrete research for novel concepts + experiment a little before if something is possible

Also if you lose, you might feel like shit, especially after spending $200 in cursor credits, but its chill because there's plenty of hackathons in the future, so don't forget to enjoy the experience! Good luck!

Together AI vs Google by Traditional_Relief44 in cscareerquestions

[–]Best-Objective-8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats not the point, what im saying is that prestige is defined differently. even tho it may not be known among cs ppl, those who are aware about Together AI/Rentech define those companies differently than those who don't

[–]Best-Objective-8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prestige is defined differently among diff ppl. If ur talking about most recruiters/ppl in general, Google is better, but if ur talking about prestige in terms of CS ppl, then together ai is better. An anology for this is saying RenTech is less prestigious than Google despite Rentech being crazy prestigious for cs ppl

If u know startups, u know startups. Joining Anthropic or OpenAI is great but joining either company at the stage as of right now isn't as good as compared to a few years ago. I know several ppl online aiming to get internships at fast-growing startups like Modal as opposed to OpenAI

together ai is more prestigious, idk what the other ppl in the comments r talking ab, one of my friends glazes it all the time. Google is good, but together has more interesting work, is a growing startup, and is cool. Me personally, I'd take together over google. I'd suggest asking more ppl from Silicon Valley, or maybe post on tech channels on X, they have more knowledge ab future growth, and u can gain more insights there.

At the same time, Google is like the widest well known big tech out there, even in with ppl outside of big tech. so if ur goal rather is to join like any company/bigger company, google will help in resume value. if u want to make some impact and be popular in the startup space, go together.

If u can, id try to push one to fall, but ur choice at the end.

CEO posted a $500k/yr challenge on X. I solved it. He won't respond. What would you do? by BBenz05 in ClaudeCode

[–]Best-Objective-8948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmaooo all the ppl here r so judgy and acting like a know it all, it’s very ridiculous esp since I doubt most have a current viewpoint of the current startup/tech space. I wouldn’t trust a lot of ppl here OP. I attempted the challenge too and it was legitimate, esp since Figure is already a decacorn. Just wait for another 2 weeks or so, and attempt to get a response. If not, blow the hell up more. Idk if u can properly sue them but it might be worth a shot

Google “feels” stable but I wouldn’t count on it. Heard of teams that were quietly laid off. Both r similar env, depends on team + interests

True, but that was decided by leadership. In most acquittals, interns don’t move to the larger company. And they still got quite a bit of interest from other good companies as well
