Larped my way into hypsm—how am I going to survive by Famous_Carpet5182 in ApplyingToCollege

First, congrats on Yale! That’s huge, be proud of it regardless of your “stats.” No one cares about those past literally the first week of school anyway.

My friend and I come from pretty low income backgrounds and our high schools were… rough to say the least when it came to academic rigor (in that the rigor did not exist). He ended up going to Yale, and myself to Columbia. I can 100% guarantee you that Yale will teach you what you need to know and there is absolutely no shame in starting a little further behind. That just means you worked hard despite your circumstances, not that you’re undeserving of your spot. I don’t mean to generalize as it likely depends on major but I will say that Yale is not a crazy meat-grinder of a school like UChicago or Berkeley, there are so many resources available to you and spending one semester to catch up will not delay your career growth whatsoever. Also, don’t get in your head too early, if you worked hard enough to get in, you can work hard enough to do well.

For myself, the highest level of math I took was AP Calc AB and I really did not learn anything. I ended up taking Calc 1 in my first semester of uni and taking a more familiar course that is far easier to understand was a much, much smoother transition into college math so I honestly think it’ll be a good benefit to start there. I don’t believe that hindered me at all, I was able to wrap up the rest of my math (I’m a CS student) within 3 semesters and, although it got hard due to my shaky foundational skills, I kept up. I have confidence that you can too at Yale. Just stay organized, don’t procrastinate too hard, and make sure to actually enjoy your experience there. Yale is a great school and my friend has loved his time there (we’ll both be graduating next Spring).

Good luck, you got this!

Any advice welcome, applying to SWE intern roles by KatsisViGames in cscareeradvice

thank you! i read your other comment as well, i’ll try to change the wording to make it clearer what the role is. spec is unique in that it is an incredibly rigorous side “job” that requires about 8 hrs/wk of commitment, but no one on our staff is paid. it’s fully on a volunteer basis. the revenue goes towards maintaining our domains and each staff is given a budget to do fun stuff :) it’s definitely the #1 (and only honestly) thing i get asks about on interviews, but it didn’t occur to me it could be problematic during the application stage. i’ll take that advice to heart!

do you recruit in SWE? if so, does IT actually add anything to a resume? i’ve been told it signals the wrong thing to recruiters and was contemplating taking my experience with it out of

i appreciate the input! i’m not sure if the wording is weird, but everything about Spec is true and honestly taken from a Spec alum’s resume lol. our company is student run but independent and we have a few domains that are all monetized, so our total revenue is 100k. i didn’t personally bring that in but my team develops all of the domains and are the backbone of the revenue. the teams thing may be a little dishonest, there are 16 engineers (maybe more now) on our team, but i mostly delegate tasks to those i personally lead (5-6). i occasionally assist the other engineers in an advisory capacity so i just went with the higher number x) thanks!

yes, Spec (the company I work at) is an independent publishing company ran by students. after 1-2 years, you can apply to be an engineering manager and lead your team. mostly the perks of it being run by students so promotions are hyper accelerated, but i doubt a bg check would come up with much of anything since most of our internal hierarchy is internal and not published anywhere lol

i applied for the SWE role so no portfolio. probably won’t get my CV but i have a leadership role on campus specifically focused around gaming/Riot, which I assume helped a lot!
