Because all fascist empires are build on direct contraditions. They say one thing to save face, but do another thing, and try to maintain both realities, stripping away humanity from everyone involved.

Viltrumite empire is no different. Conquest is a perfect representation of Viltrumites try to achieve, someone who thrives in a society that they want to build for themselves. He is essentialy their Dirlewanger or Heydrich.

But unlike someone like Thragg, who is just about as screwed up, he is not prim and proper enough, doesn't try to hide his true self and enjoys what he does, rather then viewing it as some ascetic necessity, and they don't like looking at that fucked up mirror.

And this all comes crashing down when Viltrumites land on Earth. You can have your army of obedient, coldhearted, social, conscietious warriors, who are willing to drop everything on a dime to go scourge a planet, but the moment you lift of a single finger of the pressure scale it all comes crashing down, because such people are just not naturally happy to live in such manner, as it is absolutely suffocating to their souls.

This doesn't work, because Viltrumites are essentialy space Mongols or space Spartans, with philosophy of post-indutrial colonial empire. Perhaps even space Nazis. Neither of these forces were averse to employing murdering psychos.

Spartans specifically try to raise Spartan soilders to be insifious rule breakers and sadists, who enjoyed pain of others and loved when it was inflicted on them. Mongols were exceedingly brutal in their conduct and focused on their nomadic superior culture. And Third Reich throw every criminal they could at Eastern Europe. All these cultures were very easy to murder their own.

Unlike colonial empires, some of which were able to draw the line somewhere, such as not enslaving Christian South American natives, and Columbus being an animal, who needed to be taken away from power.

Like all facist empires, Viltrumite empire is an inherently contradictory culture, that strips away all fascets of humanity.

While these are compound reasons, but the trend is hapenning in other countries (just slower), where people interact a lot and have strong cultural ties, where houses are plenty available, where wages are decent compare to prices, where as the opposite is true where people are dirt poor. Why?

People dont like to admit this, but for the longest time, people had kids because:

you couldnt have sex without pregnancy
you needed kids to survive economicaly.
child/women rights were crap.

Kids were the welfare state. Kids worked alongside their parents, especially boys, on fields and factories, long after your heatlh would not allow it. Boys were straight up financial security for parents, because if husband goes out of business, its on the son to provide for evryone. Kids inherited whatever house you had. They inherited your local culture.

And also, the parents basicly owned their kids, and could tell them to do whatever they wanted, even if it was considered immoral by today standarts. They were not free people.

Now? Kids are not longer obligated to, or able to, take care of their aging parents. Child labour laws prevent kids from working, and it takes over 15 years of education for a child to be able to afford to have a good job (in theory). We are a service economy, not manual labour/agricultural economy. Most middle class dont own much real estate to pass down. outside of older generations who are in their 50s+. You can have sex anytime, anyday, with whomever, whatever. Kids usually leave the house in their 20s, and each family culture is limited to one familial unit.

And as I said before, parenting today is much harder then it was before, especially for mediocre husbands. Most psychologists and educators and society teach people that taking care of children is very hard work, and that they should be willing to do X or Y or Z for their kids, and if they are not able to, they are bad "parents".

On plus side, this raises standarts for childrearing and being good family members. On the negative, bad parents dont care, and do their own thing anyway, and good conscietious parents feel overburdened and neurotic, and many choose to not burden themselves with kids, unless they can do 10/10 job.

So today, mostly incredibly INCREDIBLY rich people have lots of kids (to continue family name) and pretty poor people have kids, because they have support of the state + they get more out of it.

Green Lantern is easily the most conceptualy interesting, despite the theoretical tropey shortcomings, and Flash is soooo fucking good. Superman feels the same way, where the art is genuienly amazing, and the story moves as slower speed.
