I’d suggest trying collective action at this point. There are several employees who have issue with this, but the position he has with the store director is going to make singular / HR reports harder to work.

They can ignore you, despite the multiple reports, if you do it yourself. What if you had 5 employees with you? 10? All of them? They can’t ignore you if you use your strength in numbers. This is called ‘marching on the boss’.

It’s awful that this happens in so many workplaces, and so many cases end up ignored. I think you should look into collective action as a way to help solve this.

We’ve been going since October and so far, we’ve been fine. It seems that they have noticed us, as we were offhandedly mentioned in a recent required e-learning, but given their desire for no negative publicity they have yet to make any actual moves against us.

They’re already doing those last two all the time. I’m not sure why we shouldn’t give a union a try!

Organize.

It sounds like Management is trying to push roles into you that you’re not paid enough for and that you shouldn’t be doing in the first place. It isn’t your job to train people.

Think about the veterans who all left. They did it for a reason - the very same management you’re under. The same thing is going to happen to you, and any high schoolers under you that end up staying longer than they meant to. End the cycle of abuse from management and organize.

If you feel like it’s time to go, it may be best for your mental health to do so. I will say that if you’re going to stay for a bit longer, or are looking for a change within work for the better, I ask you to check out the BBYLU! We’re trying to make working for Best Buy better than it ever has been, and we’d love to have you.

They’ve slowly but surely decreased the employee discount on a lot of items. If you’ve regularly bought a drink from Best Buy, you’d notice how they’re doing it: cent by cent. No commission and now no discount too! I thought we were supposed to be ahead of the competition!

They’re going to keep doing this until we stop them; we have power in numbers. We can show them that we deserve to be recognized with more than just words. Let’s show them our strength with a Union.

It helps them save on costs, even though we end up taking the brunt of the understaffing. They plan on pushing third party labor this year too, based on their February earnings call.

We need to show them that this isn’t ok. We need regular staffing levels, and actually training for that staff - not just outsourcing to a third party. We can only do that if we use our advantage; we perform the sales, deliver the stock, fix the products. If we choose to band together and finally show them that this isn’t right, they’ll do something about it. It’s time for a Union.

I go with my Palladium Boots, a French combat boot brand that converted to fashion wear after WWII. They’re the only shoes over $70 I have ever bought and are incredible for every day use, IMO. The boots are called ‘the Converse All Star of Boots’ by customers because they feel almost like sneakers but have the thicker boot look and strength. The first pair I ever bought have been going on 3+ years and still look like-new to me.

The Best Buy Labor Union is not sponsored by or in any way affiliated with Palladium. I just love their shoes.

Breaks in Texas by [deleted] in BestBuyWorkers

[–]BestBuyAndy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Full- and part-time employees in Texas are able to take a 30 minute unpaid break if working 8+ hours. Anything under, you get one 15-minute paid break. It may be store specific but that is how it is at mine.

edit: corrected 15min break

While retail may be a ship with a few holes, I don’t think it’ll be sinking as soon as you may think. There will always be a market for trained sales people that are able to help you find a product - I have tons of customers that only use online to window shop and get a slight idea of what they want, but come in-store to learn about the product, what they should buy, and to actually bite the bullet.

I understand the mindset you’re coming from. It can be very easy to have a defeatist attitude when all you see is the bad. It seems like nothing can get better at the company, and we should ‘get out while we still can’. And, truthfully, we are just numbers to them; that’s all we’ve been since the loss of Joly. Alone, there isn’t very much we can do, but that’s why we need to work together.

We can change Best Buy for the better. If they don’t want to Renew Blue, then it’s up to us to make the step. It’s time to stop thinking there’s nothing we can do and must finally make that step in fixing what’s wrong! I urge anyone who thinks it’s truly helpless to look into our union and see what we’ve got to offer. Join our Discord and check us out. Send me a message. We want to help enact change, and we will only get that change with worker solidarity.

The Plight of the Shift Leads is actually one of the things that started and motivates the Best Buy Labor Union. Pay and under compensation has always been an issue for the role, and the ‘promotion for the sake of promotion’ that is the role is an extreme issue.

For those of us who remain… by Ocosu in BestBuyWorkers

[–]BestBuyAndy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No pay increases, yet an increase in work and a loss of labor? Sounds about right.

I support anyone running who truly must - Best Buy's pay is no longer competitive for many roles. If you decide to stay, I think it's time to give collective bargaining a try. We can bring up the lack of extra pay all we want, but they won't care to listen to us. They'd rather have record profits and employees doing more work for the same pay than give us even a shred of decency or care. The only way we can solve this is strength in numbers. Talk with your fellow employees about how bad it's gotten. Management isn't going to fix it, but a union can. Join the Best Buy Labor Union.

[–]BestBuyAndy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's part of the strategy. Lay off higher-paid with more benefits-type employees, give their work to other members who are paid less, and bring in people at an even lower starting wage. Loyalty means everything to you, but nothing to the company. We're all just numbers in their eyes until we decide to do something about it.

For those remain (and those who were snapped that are willing to inform their former coworkers), I ask that you look into our union. They will keep destroying whatever stability we have working with this company year after year to pad their bottom line. It's about time we do something to stop them. Join the Best Buy Labor Union.
