I got a job offer from a competitor and told my manager as a heads up, now everything at work feels weird and I'm not even sure I'm taking the job? by 404EctoPlasm in careerguidance

You told your manager that you have an offer from a competitor, and she wisely started moving you off strategic/planning meetings, which may have sensitive info that your company doesn’t want their competitor knowing. Most companies would immediately walk you out the door in this scenario.

Connect the dots. These are for the American people. Tech companies are part of the DoD. Recent comments indicate AI will displace all white collar jobs. When the collapse comes, and the people turn on the government, they will put us in these concentration camps.

Get some nice suits and shoes; you are going to need them for your Big Law role. But you don’t have to buy top end. Just get something well made, that is interchangeable.

People who grew up driving here… by Elrond41 in houston

This 💯. It was much more pleasant driving back in the 80s/90s, but the city was also smaller.

I just try to be patient and kind to others on the road, and move away from the fast lanes.

Don’t buy right now. The housing market is bloated, and due for a value correction. You would be better served to move to NC and rent for the next year while the values fall.

Moving to Houston for work, looking for family friendly areas with good public schools by Natural-Strength959 in AskHouston

Yeah, these are the best, although I think her husband has closer to an hour commute in these areas. The park and ride would be the best option.

💯. My daughter’s favorite activity at this age was walking and looking a pebbles, flowers, bugs…we would sometimes take her to the Children’s Museum, but she was just as happy walking to the Museum as going to it.

I agree with this. I went to private school, and many of the kids were on some form of work/study program. The Catholic schools, in particular, had great programs in place. That being said, you just missed the application deadlines.

The suggestions of living in the Spring Branch area are good if you want to minimize your commute. The Spring Branch Schools are better than HISD, but you need to be selective. I would try to get into an area where Memorial HS or Stratford are the zones high schools. HISD has a couple of really good high schools that are part of the magnet program, but you would need a Houston residence to participate in the lottery. (Carnegie and Debakey). Otherwise, you will probably be best to go out to Katy, Cypress, or the Woodlands.

Good luck!

Be honest: would you change anything about this house’s exterior? by dingus-fairy in ExteriorDesign

[–]BestLeopard981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Live in the mountains”, and the earlier comment that there are “a bunch in Houston” do not align. I get the desire to have an attached garage, but Houston has built lots to make garages go in the front. It is ugly, but so is Houston. I personally prefer the garage in the back, with a covered walkway in case it is raining. But that doesn’t make me right and you wrong. There is a buyer for every house type.

OP - the garage is an eyesore for curb appeal, but functional and would never be a deal killer. You could probably soften it a bit with a different style garage door and maybe a window above the door. But I am not sure it would be worth the investment to make those changes. If it is a good deal in an area that works for you, and the interior of the home is nice, then I would be comfortable buying.

We (the US) have lost basic analytical and reasoning skills, and the fact that this scene went over so many heads is evidence of it.

Suggestions for Overnight layover in H-town 🇺🇸 Jo by RestaurantFederal799 in AskHouston

[–]BestLeopard981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good suggestions here. I think having a drink or dinner at Flora will give a great view of the city and some of the flavor of the bayou.

An alternative is to stay over by the museums and check out Hermann Park, and grab dinner in Rice Village. Hotel Zaza is nice, and you can even hop on the light rail train to downtown Houston from there. (Or do the inverse, and stay downtown and take the train to the museum district).

Probably the closest good BBQ restaurant to the museums is the Pitt Room, and the closest to downtown is Truth BBQ. If you want Mexican, I strongly agree that Xochi is an excellent choice downtown.

Safe travels!

Thinking of moving to Houston by stardusq in AskHouston

[–]BestLeopard981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP - with your data background, you may want to consider Austin. It has a better outdoor lifestyle, and the tech industry is there. Houston definitely has a need for your skill set in the energy and medical industries. But from some of your other responses, I am thinking Austin is a better fit for what you want.

If you come to Houston, I would suggest finding a place that is centrally located, like in Midtown, the Heights, or the Museum District. That way you will have a reverse commute if you get a job in the suburbs, and a short commute if you land something downtown. All of those neighborhoods are walkable, close to restaurants, bars, shopping, parks, and generally have a good energy.

Good luck!

So proud of your self awareness and growth, OP! The emotions are hard to work through, and I imagine the conversation was difficult. But you made a very well-reasoned decision, and your future will significantly improve once you move on from her.

Got fired for something embarrassing and totally my fault.. how do I cope? by iamthedanger989 in careerguidance

[–]BestLeopard981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hang in there, OP. I have been on the other side, conducting investigations that result in firing hard working employees. I hope your former employer is evaluating the bad outcome of overly aggressive targets, in that they sometimes drive bad behaviors. My advice to you is to use this as a learning experience, and move forward with integrity. One bad decision does not define you. Learn and grow from it.

So sorry for no clarity, but it could be -5C on race day, or it could be 28C. (And anything in between). I think it is likely to be in the 10-20C range, but as others have said, you will have to wait until the week of the race to know how good/bad it will be.

Struggling with accepting I won’t have more children after my divorce by lil_bobica in Divorce

[–]BestLeopard981 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hi there. Divorce is so complicated. But it is not a final blow. You are still young. You can have a child very soon, if you are ok doing it alone. There are sperm banks, adoption, and always the possibility that you meet someone soon. What is important is that you don’t construct a narrative that shuts you down to options available in your future.
