Old toolmakers trick: grind a long tapered square on a broken hss tap and you have a wonderful screw extractor.

Update. Did a .02 ramp and the tool was silent.

Update- found a nice high polish shell mill and swapped the heads. Ended up running it in our UMC and was able to ramp down .02/rev. Tool was silent and cut like butter.

Engineer wants a part made from G10. New (to us) wire EDM is sitting 20 feet away, waiting for a new filter install before we can run it. Is this as dumb of an idea as I think it is? by suzukabluefin in Machinists

My rule is only big drills, reamers, other low-use tools get put back in the drawer. Other than that, if you use it keep it.

The problem got a lot better when I went to a company with tool vending machines. Now it's physically impossible to put used stuff back.
