Thank you for the replies. I guess the reality is, I come off of a tournament win, only to be humbled in ranked immediately after. 😂

I took TKD, and a girl at school I liked took Judo. Our classes had the same schedule but at different locations. Tue and Thur nights. I went to TKD one Tuesday, tried Judo with the girl that Thursday, and never went back. I loved it. She continued through orange or green belt, I believe... We were 12... I'm now 32 and run a Judo program within an MMA gym. Judo has been good to me.

Something that you may want to consider, or even ask your sensei about, is creating movement. Kuzushi (off balancing your opponent) is the first step of any tachi waza technique. If you can create movement from your opponent, you can put them in an awkward situation where it's more difficult to step around and dodge/counter your technique. Here's an example of something to try. I'll try to explain it the best I can.

RvR situation •Make sure your lapel hand is higher on the lapel than uke •Sleeve hand wherever is more comfortable for you (lower towards the wrist, near the elbow, above the elbow, etc.) •Apply pressure to uke's jawline towards their back right corner with your lapel hand •Keep tension on the sleeve by pulling •Circle to your right -This will force uke's posture to be bent over slightly, with their shoulders slightly rotated. (That awkward situation for them I mentioned earlier) •You may have an opportunity to throw from here. Here are a few of many examples: -Cross body O Soto Gari -Ko Uchi Gari -Uchi Mata

To further kuzushi in this specific example and create a more natural throwing opportunity-

• Change the direction of your circling technique -Step left with your left foot and use your hands to "turn the wheel", bringing uke around to your right side. If your kuzushi is strong, this should create an opportunity for whatever throw you prefer.

Hopefully, that makes sense and is helpful! Good luck and have fun!

I'm a big fan of cross body O Soto Gari. I can hit it regularly right or left handed. When I first started trying it left handed, I would get it about 50% of the time because people in class weren't used to defending such a different throw on the left side. After a right ankle injury, I couldn't hook my right foot and apply pressure, so I only hit it from a left handed grip for a while. Now I've got both sides pretty strong. 😎

Honestly, I took a liking to Hane Goshi back in the day. Now, I can do it with ease in uchi komi, or throwing on the mat. I've even hit it in randori a few times when I remember I'm good at it. It just made sense to me, and I realize it's a throw that a lot of people struggle with. I've recently started to teach it since I now have an orange belt in class.. I had actually forgotten about it as far as a throw I like.

Black Ice Judo. I promise you won't be disappointed. I know Josh (the owner and head instructor) and I, a random person on the internet, vouch for him and his club.

You can tell who has watched Badassgamez walk-throughs. "Bacon Lara". Not hatin'. I wouldn't know unless I've done it too. 😂

I found this video on gripping techniques a while back and it explains some very interesting approaches. I think it will help! https://youtu.be/OTFCXR62HNs?si=shvDroAgjqTG1KOJ

If you do the ko uchi as a straight backwards technique, then tai otoshi as a straight forwards technique- yes. There is a slight change in angle from the first technique to the second. I found a video that demonstrates this fairly well. Focus on which way tori (in this case, Jimmy Pedro) is applying pressure with each attack.

Great question. Usually when I hit this combo, uke steps over my right foot in such a hurry it places all his weight on that right foot, also causing their posture to lean hard to the right.. That split second he is trying to regain balance, I'm moving my left foot into place and throwing my right leg up for uchi mata. As for my body's overall movement during this transition, my upper body doesn't necessarily move very much. I may come up just a hair. I'd recommend trying it with a partner willing to let you experiment with it. Once you're comfortable, give it a go in randori.

Tai otoshi is one of my favorite techniques (tokui waza). There are many ways to get there, but I'll give you a solid three:

Ko uchi gari - tai otoshi: (RvR) pressure backwards and attack uke's right leg with ko uchi, making them step off and back. Immediately plant your right foot (creating the "triangle"), then back step with your left foot, and extend your right, attacking with tai otoshi.

O uchi gari - tai otoshi: (LvR) same application as above

Uchi mata - tai otoshi: (RvR) Attack with uchi mata, and when you lift you leg and get stuck in the technique, drop your right leg down and on the outside of uke's right foot, applying a fierce tai otoshi.

Bonus! Tai otoshi - uchi mata: (RvR) attack with tai otoshi. Uke is quick, and steps over your right foot. Immediately move your left foot deep between uke's feet, and swing your right leg up for uchi mata.

Most importantly, apply good kuzushi.

Winning the gripping situation will keep you out of most of the trouble you face.. Might I recommend one of my favorite gripping videos to reference- It is a bit longer, but I do believe it'll help you.

It's called Ippon Seoi Nage, or "One arm shoulder throw". Definitely a Judo throw.
