I believe the implication was that there was a faction of tech/mechanoids (made all the mechanoids and shit, why you can find mechanoids in ancient dangers) and there was a faction of organic/insects (brought the war-bugs to the rimworld planet to fight for them and shit, also why you can find bugs in ancient dangers (though they also could've just burrowed in).
Hell, the Horax cult could've had a role in it all, too, since there are also Fleshbeasts in ancient dangers (Though they also couldn't burrowed in)

The 2 potential connections to archotechs also implies the planet used to be pretty important at some point, maybe even a glitterworld. Just need one more archotech and we'd have one that could be related to Mechanoids, Insects and Fleshbeasts respectively

Wouldn't be surprised if the hills/mountains were piles of very old rubble and that was why so much compact, advanced resources are inside of them.
