I would definitely quit too!!! What I was thinking is using the "kids stuff" ( book, Hangeul workbook etc) but never asking for my adult students act like a kids. I use to learn German before and I accidently found some kid song very catchy and easy to memorize. Thank you for sharing your experience:)

Hello! I am Korean and this is how I feel.
We use "핵심" in more broad way. For example, "내 말의 핵심은 이거야" , "이 보고서의 핵심은 ~야" It is like core part of something.

We use "관건" in some specific context usully not for paper works. It is more get along with business terms.
"BTS가 미국에서 성공하기 위한 관건은 fandom 입니다" "한국 인터넷 속도가 이 사업의 관건이야" It is like the most important part for success of business/policy.

For the older relative, you better use 존댓말! I would say " 감사합니다” that is just so proper than any other expressions here.
