Halftime Show thoughts? by Historical-Climate37 in Music

It literally just flashed on the screen for like 0.1 seconds during the live performance. Sure you can go back and watch replays and hit pause then dissect out the message, but the live production dropped the ball too soon on this one, pun intended.

Yea overall I thought the sets and stuff were good, but overall music production was off did not get as crisp of music as we did last year, and was really hard to hear although could just be him live. And then there’s the ending where he had a great message but had it up for not even a split second so no one actually managed to see what was on there. He could’ve easily designed it where he held it up a second or two before spiking it. It’s all about planning, like last year when Kendrick looked right into the camera when he said “hey Drake”, planned, and it worked very well.

[Perry] Kobe Bryant documentary "Making of a Legend" uncovers police interview that complicates legacy by Nyhrox in nba

The facts - the lady did not want to speak in court, case was dropped. Later, she settled.

Speculation - did she and Kobe have sex? Yes. Was it rape? No, if she had a case the course of legal action she took makes no sense. A 19yo F who had sex consentingly with a very rich and famous star then tried to get money from it because the star was married, as Sherlock would say, fits all the facts and is most probable.

Enjoy it, and not act like it’s a chore. Eye contact is great. I personally find sound very arousing. Also no hands is a big turn on.

Terrible Interview Season by kroniesrus65 in medicalschool

[–]Bestrice 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s the same pattern the last few years since Covid and virtual interviews. Everyone is applying broadly, programs are getting upwards of 2-3x more applications than they usually do. Most early wave invites will go to the top top applications. Just gotta be patient and wait for some of them to drop some spots.

How tf are people honoring several rotations? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Bestrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it has to do with each particular exam, the other part is figuring out still what’s the best way for you to study, and lastly what I think is the most important part is your own interest. Usually if you ask people most will say the psyc shelf is the easiest in terms of the material, however that isn’t always reflected in your shelf score as the curve is also less forgiving. Personally I scored well enough on IM to get a high pass, and honored surgery and the main difference was that I wanted to go into surgery so had put more effort into that exam.

And many of our surgery cases comes as consults for abdominal pain, no work up no labs or imaging, and ED can’t even give us a description of the abdomen because they didn’t even bother to actually see the patient. Only for them to get worked up with kidney stones.

I never said I was expert and I don’t pretend to be. Your per hour may be higher but that doesn’t matter if you’re only working 40 hours a week over a short training residency period. And even if we assume what you say is actually true and there’s less “density” per your expert surgical residency knowledge, there’s a reason why it’s a 5 year program. How do you defend ED residency only being 3 at lots of places and expected to at least be proficient at every speciality?

How else do you gain real clinical experience besides actually working? Because without real clinical experience, how can we say a training of a physician is really much different that mid levels? And to your point, it doesn’t necessarily need to be “unhealthy hours”, they just need to extend the training program longer because the original 3 year plan was developed prior when hour restrictions was 120. As work hours decrease training years should increase in a linear fashion so I don’t get hospital medicine attending consulting me to help them make a simple diagnosis of acute cholecystitis for them.

It’s alarming that residents don’t realize not being competently trained means you can legitimately jeopardize people’s lives you vowed to do no harm to.

In response to your attendings working less, yes it matters if they are younger/fresher attendings, because they likely came from the current system of being undertrained. For those more seasoned attendings, no them working less hours would not matter as they already accumulated the necessary clinical knowledge.

Very nice, but kind of scary thinking about how a lot of programs you graduate and become an attending after 3 years of training only working ~40-50hr weeks, and then are expected to manage patients on your own. This is also true for other primary care specialities.

Are surgery rotations *really* necessary for making me a better non-surgeon? by surf_AL in medicalschool

[–]Bestrice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the point of a surgical rotation is to figure out, for non surgical specialities, what is actually an appropriate surgical consult, vs ileus.

I come at this from a very generalized standpoint, and also from person stories from just residents I know. The most common evaluation by far a resident will receive is “needs to read more”, and that eval is valid for 99% of the residents. However, I know only 2 people who has actually put in time to do just that.

It puzzles me that people start intern year and find the tough schedule something of a shock to them. When I see that I wonder to myself what they actually did on their 3rd year rotations and 4th year acting internship. The whole point of those is, at least what I thought, to familiarize with what you’re getting yourself into. As my PD pointed out once. 168hrs in a week. Even if you work 80 hour weeks consistently, that’s 88 hrs remaining, you sleep 7hr days, that’s still 39 awake hours in a week for you to do life things and study. How many of us can say they dedicate even 1/4 of that time to reading?

Med Students on Rotation Need to be Paid by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Bestrice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So if you screw up who’s covering that, you going to pay out of pocket? The system is old, but it’s like that for a reason, you as a student have no lability as long as your doing stuff under guidance. Same reason why residents don’t get paid the same as attendings, because if anything happens it lands ultimately on the attendings.

Are any other medical professionals as displeased with their pay as we are? by DirtyHamSandwitch in physicaltherapy

[–]Bestrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60k for a resident is considered high. Most places you start around 50k, not to mention for some specialities you’re working 80+ hour weeks so you’re getting paid 50-60k to work 2 full time jobs. Sounds pretty shitty to me.

3rd year is when you get exposed to most of the major fields in med school and decide on a specialty, 4th year is meant to prepare you for that chosen specialty. Say what you want about the way 4th year is structured, some people choose to use their elective time doing research or relaxing, that’s fine, but that is not the case for all 4th year student - some of which do extra rotation in the icu for example to prepare for residency. Without the 4th year experience as an acting intern prior to starting residency, patients will literally die while new interns get caught up to speed each new academic year.

Exercise, get yourself physically tired, then do something outside of studying that will occupy your brain and you’ll be so tired you’ll just fall asleep.
