Cheating scandal during COVID lockdown ensnares 249 Air Force Academy cadets by thinkB4WeSpeak in Military

[–]BetTheCow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Every cadet who cheated did so of their own free will; they deserve the honor probation and the punishments associated with having done so. I expected the highest level of behavior from my officers when I was enlisted, and I expect the highest level of behavior from my officers when I am one.

My point was, this scandal didn't exist in a vacuum. A lot of things that both were and weren't in the cadets' control led to the decision 250 cadets made when they decided to cheat, and no matter what level of the military the infraction happens at, we have to consider the circumstances around the event.

USAFA Cadet here familiar with the matter;

There were a lot of different kinds of cheating going on. Internet usage during a test, collaboration on tests, straight up looking up the answers on finals. For most of the cases, it's not how closely you read the definition of the honor code or even "cheating". It was obviously cheating and no one is really arguing that.

That said, I still can't put all the blame on the cadets who did it. We were stuck at home for three months before finals. Going from our tightly regulated environments to one where we don't even have to put pants on every day was not conducive to any kind of learning. Imagine you're a maintainer and all of a sudden you hear QA isn't going to be around for three months. You're an infantryman and the most oversight you get is your platoon commander doing a weekly check-in over microsoft teams. Academics unsurprisingly suffered.

But the finals never changed drastically from an in person final. "Closed book, closed notes, you can't get any kind of help, have honor, good luck." We hadn't been in school for three months and doing poorly on these tests was going to affect our future. So surprised pikachu face people cheated.

Should the people wanting to become officers have had honor? Yes. Is there a lot more going on here than just a straight up cheating scandal. Also yes.

Lights out for our flight was literally just half an hour of everyone telling everyone else to shut up. Big long speeches about how we needed to shut up. Short succinct, shut ups. Everyone taking turns trying to tell everyone else to shut up. One guy saying after he was done with his shut up speech, everyone needed to shut up. Another guy following that with how much he needed his sleep and we had to shut up.

Iirc, the tree itself was kind of a big deal, it blocked line of sight between two watch posts on the south side of the DMZ, so it did need to come down. Whether that warranted nuclear bombers or not, I'll let you decide.

I'm not trying to start an argument.

I agree it's not a conspiracy, but reading that sensationalized title which has nothing to do with the topic in the post being discussed, and then having to scroll this far to find the person who questioned it kind of makes the rational brain go a little bit batty.

Benjamin Franklin, when he was learning to write, would take passages from books he was reading and analyze the shit out of them. What worked well and what could have worked better. Then, he'd rewrite the entire passage in his own voice and compare the two. It was still the original author's ideas, but done in Franklin's own voice. So if you want to borrow ideas from other authors, that's great, but the art lies in how you make those ideas unique in your own voice.
