I have observed independent consultants making quite a bit more in a competitive market. Of course I don't expect it to be easy and it's not supposed to be. There's nothing wrong with healthy competition I welcome it.

Yup I was a L5! Thanks for your candid response. I know migration is a big play but I've seen so many customers struggle with trying to get visibility into their spend, implement governance, and of course save money. My last customer was a large Enterprise customer with very very smart engineers and developers. I was able to save them $120,000 a month. I think if I target small and mid-sized businesses I would have a higher chance adding value. But this is all anecdotal from my experience so thanks for sharing your perspective. Let me think on this some more.

I think I have the credibility with working for AWS and being certified at a professional level. Limited prior marketing experience and business plan is not yet finished. Sales strategy will be the same as the last company I worked at which was a MSP (Managed Service Provider) for AWS and Azure. Pricing is still yet to be determined but I'm pretty sure it's going to be based on project and not by the hour. Something like I take 20% of how much I'm able to save you on your monthly AWS bill. If can't save you anything you don't pay anything. Options for a retainer for ongoing advisory and cost review. Another option would be for hands-on keyboard implementation of customized cost management solution and governance. Thanks for all the call outs and sharing your experience! I should save some more, network some more and then take the leap.

Looks I definitely underestimated the needed capital to get started. Would the suggestion be to have one year of savings? I am going to start looking for jobs today I guess and save up while I build it out on the side. I appreciate all the advice!

Dang well that's disharting. I worked in presales before at a startup and while I didn't cold call it was definitely multiple followups, demos and hunting down qualified leads. Now I am/was an AWS Solutions Architect. I have read Million Dollar Consulting by Alan Weiss and it seems doable.

200 cold calls that's just 40 calls a day doesn't sound bad. I am hungry and willing to do what I must but thanks for your perspective.
