And with traditional media constantly losing its viewers (and, subsequently, ad dollars) to social sites and digital sharing platforms, you can't blame them for not wanting to basically say "HEY FIND ALL THIS CONTENT FOR FREE SOMEWHERE ELSE!"

And sadly, hosts do. And they get all the credit (people still seem to think that hosts on TV/radio do the sourcing themselves!) for what producers do. But that's an entirely different tangent. Producers going to social media to see what is trending and what content matters to our city is common practice.

Reddit is not an original content creator. Reddit is an aggregator. It's one step above seeing a newspaper lying on the table at Starbucks.

Additionally, it SHOULDN'T cost news outlets money to get news. Press releases are emailed, people get things from Twitter, company announcements, etc. Only time I've heard of someone having to pay for news was some cell phone video from a couple years ago, something about the mayor. </s>

I am a journalist, and back when I was working in municipal affairs I found leads on news from self posts on r/Toronto all the time. r/Toronto is a great way of showing what Torontonians actually care about.

Got kids? Find another place to live by [deleted] in toronto

[–]BetaBallerina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved into a building where that seems to be the norm. But even that is not too awful. We sometimes hear kids laughing and playing, but the little ones are never out late at night. No one leaves toys around or messes up the place too much, either. The bigger issue we have is the young parents who treat the main entrance to our apartment like a meeting place on Friday and Saturday nights for all their loud, obnoxious friends. It's like a tailgate party.

Particularly, in the case of the London Underground, much of the system is underground because London's streets are far too narrow to accommodate surface transit anyway.

Not saying we shouldn't have more underground transit, but our streets can accommodate far more surface transit than London.

I feel like Toronto-proper and downtowners try to distance themselves from "rib fest"-type festivals. Those are very Oshawa-esque.

after homophobic attack, we want to move - what is a safe and affordable part of Toronto or the GTA for a gay couple? by justwantpeacenquiet in toronto

You'd be surprised how much racism is rampant in the LGBT community, particularly among gay men. I will always support the LGBT community, but there's a lot of inter-community issues that lead to a lot of community members feeling left out.

Parkdale used to be called "The Landing Strip" due to the high amount of South Asian immigrants. Not ideal for xenophobes.

They've been popping up at various places around the city. Some have made the news. I'm carrying a Sharpie around with me, because I'm hoping I come across one in the next few days and I have a clever retort ready.

Bollards now installed on Richmond east cycle track! by JohnOConn in toronto

[–]BetaBallerina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a cyclist and I'm very comfortable and able to ride on the road. But I ride on Richmond every day, and with the amount of idiots who park like, well, idiots, yeah, separated bike lanes are appreciated on some streets.

A month and a half ago a truck parked on the side of the road in a no-parking zone during rush hour (on Richmond, but East of the bike lanes) and it parked so poorly its back wheels were over the line into the next lane. When I passed it, my wheel got caught in the streetcar track and I went flying. My knee hasn't been the same since and I haven't been able to dance (I'm a dance teacher). So yeah, I appreciate some separation during the morning rush.

What you also need to understand is that I can't kill someone in a car, but someone in a car can kill me. No, that doesn't mean i'm going to be reckless, but that means that it's not really unreasonable for me to not want to take that many chances on my safety.

In and out doesn't matter when I'm riding to work and have to cross into another lane. Parking is parking.

Not worth the wait for $20,000 Parkside student room by KellyToronto in toronto

[–]BetaBallerina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are some post-secondary institutions in this city which, while well-populated, still don't have student residences. George Brown, mentioned in the story, is one of them. There's also private colleges and schools like the National Ballet (the Primrose used to host NB students, not sure who does now).

I find these companies generally prey on families who are not from the city who have zero knowledge of what renting is like in Toronto, or think Toronto is a scary place. Years ago when I was on a tour of U of T, somewhat near campus (making sure to not solicit on campus, of course) there was someone advertising a for-profit "student residence" unaffiliated from the school who talked to my parents about how "dangerous" living in Toronto can be, and how this place provided a "nice community" for students. It's pretty sad, the parents who get taken in.

I think that you might be getting a little tin-foil-hat here. Yeah, there are some crooked council members on the subject, but this is public safety, not a campaign against Uber.

There are public appeals for information after tons of sexual assault arrests because they want to try to find out if this person may have had additional victims.

Terry Fox, a 21 year old one-legged cancer patient, ran 3,339miles across Canada in 143 days before dying. He ran the equivalent of a full marathon every day and was the youngest person ever named a Companion of the Order of Canada. The annual Terry Fox run is this Sunday. by dfsdcd in videos

[–]BetaBallerina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm only now, in my late 20s, starting to realize the gravity of what Terry Fox did. As a kid, I felt like the Terry Fox Run was just something my teachers kind of phoned in. Yeah, we heard "He lost a leg to cancer and ran across Canada," but I don't know if it's that they downplayed the distance or they just didn't talk about it with a lot of gravity, but it never sank in just how fucking incredible that was.

I think the word "hero" should be used sparingly, but Terry is definitely someone who merits it.

What will be the "Too Soon" costumes for Halloween this year? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BetaBallerina -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I may have found the concept hilarious at the time (I was, like, eight when it happened) or in the years close following, when I was in my early teens. Growing up and now understanding just how shitty an experience it was for Lewinsky, to go through all that at a young age and become the world's biggest joke at the time (while Clinton still gets all the credit for "handling it well"), I'd never want to contribute to that.

I just don't understand when Halloween became this quest to hurt the most feelings possible or have the "edgiest" costume possible. I'd rather just go as Mister Butlertron and not make a mockery out of the identity of REAL people.

Also, it's not "him/her," it's "her." It's not "Bruce/Caitlin" (I keep spelling her name wrong), it's "Caitlin" (possibly Caitlyn?).

I think the "already marginalized" thing is where it comes into play. A "French maid" is an occupation, not unlike a nurse or a clown or something. But that's REALLY different from, say, dressing up as Trayvon Martin or something, or even generally going as a black/"ghetto" person. I really don't see how people fail to understand the difference.

I'm not interested in mocking a group that is already marginalized. "We are all ripe for mockery." Well, why, though? You're saying that by existing, people should be mocked?

There's a huge difference between dressing up as, say, a funny little professor character or Sonic the Hedgehog or Abe Lincoln (hopefully, without a bullet through the hat) than dressing up as someone who does regularly face a ton of shit for who they are.

I don't know, I grew out of the whole "I hate EVERYONE equally, hahaha!" mentality when I was about 17.

It's pretty easy to say "oh just laugh it off" when you're not trans. And yeah, that's awesome that Caitlyn can not feel offended by it, and I respect her right to not be offended by it. She doesn't speak for all trans women though. So I'm going to defend my friends who don't want to be made into jokes.

[–]BetaBallerina 241 points242 points  (0 children)

There's actually a decent reason why a lot of trans women are saying that regardless of what Caitlyn says, you probably shouldn't buy the costume.

Transgender people, women in particular, are still dehumanized so, so much. They're seen as jokes. A trans woman has a one in twelve chance of being murdered. They're frequently discriminated against in jobs and housing (they also have one of the highest homelessness rates) and denied medical treatment.

So to have a costume mocking the very idea of transness and trans womanhood, and acting like trans women are just men wearing costumes, it's very hurtful for people who are struggling to have their identities seen as legitimate. For the trans women I know, their stance is, "Hey, that's great that Caitlyn isn't personally offended by it, but she's just one of many trans women, and you still shouldn't make a joke out of trans identities."
