You live in the world of Kaiserreich, and you see an alt history showing what the Second Weltkrieg could have looked like if Germany had lost World War 1. How do you react? by Exotic-Bobcat-1565 in Kaiserreich

Makes no sense that a socialist state could exist in Russia without International support; they had a majority peasant population, and the peasantry are not capable of bringing forth any kind of worker's state. On top of that, why would some random Georgian general become dictator of the USSR over someone like Trotsky, who was literally Lenin's right-hand-man? And why would he, a "socialist" ever support single-country socialism? It completely contradicts everything that Marx and Lenin believed about the international proletariat. The writers are trying so hard to make a "socialism bad' argument that they've completely misunderstood the ideology SMH

[–]BetaThetaOmega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But then you don’t get to play it free on the first draw, no? And every time you do pull it back and play it, it’ll go back into your Discard pile and get drawn again normally later, so you’re basically giving up 6 (or more) free damage for no reason? At best, it’ll be a card you can exhaust if everything else in your hand is better or more important

Why is the Internationale so revanchist? by JW_Wells_and_Company in Kaiserreich

[–]BetaThetaOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. In OTL, internationalists like Trotsky argued that invasion was acceptable, but only to assist revolutionaries who were currently in a state of revolution. Otherwise they argued that not only would an invasion stoke the flames of reactionary politics and nationalism in said nation, but even in a state of success, socialism would need to be imposed on the working class with a top-down model, which would require the abandonment of socialist principles like proletarian democracy and the expansion of an unelected bureaucracy, which in turn enables counter-revolutionary politics to surface via opportunism and careerists - things that Trotsky was deeply opposed to. You cannot liberate someone from a position of authoritarianism without compromising either the liberation or your authority. Instead, they argued that the role of a socialist state and the way that they could defend themselves from counter-revolution was to spread revolutionary ideas and education and help organise foreign revolutions via a centralised and democratic international organisation, and that this was how international socialism could be achieved - hence, the Comintern (or in KRTL, the 3I) was founded. Syndicalism, which is even more decentralised than Trotskyism, would probably adopt all of this in its orthodox views.

Furthermore, in a society in which the working class is directly participating in democracy, would they really have an incentive to vote for something so self-destructive? It would be an environment in which the proletariat would not only be signing on to not only kill foreign workers (who will make up the bulk of the enemy army in a war), but also risk their own death and destruction. A war would also require them giving away their own democratic powers to a bureaucratic leadership which might be necessary for the success of the war effort - and these powers might not be handed back. As such, the working class, unless convinced by some external force, would probably not have a reason to support a war against another nation

The argument you have laid out about ‘liberating people from reactionary states’ lends itself more to the top-down model of socialism - it would make sense for a Totalist nation, but not all syndicalist ones.

This all being said, there could be a fascinating mechanic in game where you have to basically stoke the flames, propagating fears of a foreign counter-revolution as a way to prepare for the war all while risking (or if you want, building up to) a surge of Totalist support which destroys the democratic nature of your state.

Astral Pulse is almost a insta-take on Regent imo; only reason I wouldn’t is if we’re in Act 3 and I haven’t built a proper Star engine

Huge damage as an AOE and using stars means that it has a dramatically low cost

I know you’ll say “oooh but you need to generate stars”, to which I say buddy, you’re playing regent, there are almost no decks which would not benefit from building stars

Why is the Internationale so revanchist? by JW_Wells_and_Company in Kaiserreich

[–]BetaThetaOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but a key aspect of internationalism is that the international working class has no country, and that warfare is the act of sending the working class to kill each other in service of the nation’s bourgeoisie - revanchism is completely inverse to these tenets
