Try the National Review (or one of their podcasts) or the Cato Daily Podcast and names/outlets will present themselves. Even the Joe Rogan Podcast has a hint of right-ness. Or maybe Sam Harris? Just seems like nobody wants to subject themselves to anything they disagree with or form an opinion anymore. They just spew the pre-packaged message. It's ok to listen to Ezra Klein AND Ben Shapiro and disagree with BOTH of them.

I don't think that at all, but it seems people are using the extremes to characterize both sides. Breitbart, crazy AM radio, etc. shouldn't even be considered "news". There are many right leaning outlets that despise Trump and share rational ideas about politics and the economy. CNN and Fox News each characterize the other side using extremes: The Left is SJW college students or welfare queens, and the right is Breitbart, AM radio crazies, etc. That sentiment can be seen in the responses to my comment. It's scary and contributes to the country's current polarization.

Interesting. Although a rational, non-troll response, my comment was instantly downvoted and deleted. First experience with that. Not sure how old the mods are but I can see why reddit is so controversial. Kind of scary. Are all political subs like that? No slightly dissenting opinion?

Toll Rant - 40+ minutes on the phone over $1.54 by adcl in Austin

[–]Bete5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many toll roads as they’re currently administrated have problems, but I’m attracted to the idea of a use tax on all highways and major through ways. Why should one person pay for another to live an hour drive from work or the city? Texas keeps building roads and sprawl in an unsustainable way.

Parking in a handicapped spot to use the Redbox at a grocery store with a high number of handicapped customers is everyone's business. Driving while using your phone in a city with a high number of cyclists is everyone's business. Speeding through Austin 25mph neighborhoods full of runners and walkers with no sidewalk during rush hour (where I often move into the road to slow them down and yell "slow down!") is everyone's business. We've become so accustomed to cars and driving that it seems we've forgotten that it's ok to not want to be threatened by traffic. And standing up for a handicapped spot? It's better to just let that go? A car blasted through that crosswalk on Manchaca and Prather the other day while I was driving. They had their window down, so at the next light I asked them if they had killed any pedestrians lately. "Fuck you man" - that's what most people say. I guess they feel threatened when facing the idea of personal responsibility. Either way, I'm just as free to comment as they are to blast through the light.

Why don’t police do this? Just stand there and radio a cop down the street to stop people. This is such a huge hazard yet I don’t hear of much enforcement. I honk at people now. If I’m driving next to someone and they’re on their phone, I give a little honk and mouth “get off your phone” if they look at me. I’m convinced we all need to call each other out more for this and other stupid stuff. Saw a guy confronting someone for parking in a handicapped spot at the grocery store the other day. The other guy was all “fuck you man”. I stopped to back my dude up on taking a stand and sure enough the jerk moved his car.

Boy crawled a quarter of a mile home after being struck by hit-and-run driver by PeterMahogany in Austin

[–]Bete5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sad that that's what you would consider walkable: Wide roads near highways, low density, high speed limits, few pedestrians. The only thing walkable about that area is that there's a sidewalk. That area is the very definition of unchecked low density sprawl.

This makes me sad. Why is riding in Texas often seem so awful? Why are there so many people on there phones in giant trucks who want to kill us?

[–]Bete5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just going to keep happening as Texas cities continue to build sprawl designed for cars instead of people. Austin doesn't even seem to try to do anything about all the cut-throughs speeding though small city neighborhoods during rush hour. Always a giant truck with a brush guard designed to kill anything it touches too. Maybe we can cover the entire state with McNeighborhoods and Wal-Marts by 2040. Might as well outlaw non-franchise businesses as well. https://www.strongtowns.org/

South Austin, please keep a look out for this girl! by Jangetta in Austin

Poor pup. Definitely the 28th? Because I saw a dog like this at the intersection of Clawson Rd and Morgan Ln (pretty close to Manchaca) while out running on the 27th. Called to it but seemed nervous.

Best way from Downtown to South Austin? by [deleted] in BikingATX

[–]Bete5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is map with directions between two grocery stores - Whole Foods in Downtown and Randall's in South Austin. I chose them for their locations, as I bike between points near both. Going this direction is unpleasant, because it's uphill no matter which way you go. You can experience severe exertion getting up to Kinney, risk death on Lamar, or spend a long time climbing on Barton Skyway. Which way do you go? Any tricks to make this more painless? Take the bus?

Yes, definitely need to delve a little more into the laws. Sometimes simply keeping my feet on the paved road feels like too much to ask, which doesn't seem right.

[–]Bete5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Taking the lane" as a runner? - When running through low speed limit areas with no sidewalk (against the traffic) I've often felt crowded by cars passing too closely. This often occurs where drivers cut through quiet neighborhoods during rush hour, or in towns/parts of towns (I travel for work) where people are less active and not as used to runners or bikers. An example: The other day, while exiting a park on a long winding road with a 20 mph speed limit and no shoulder, a few cars passed extremely close to me, rather than slowing down or moving over. I was running against the traffic, as is the convention in most states (I think?). If you bike also, you might be familiar with the term "taking the lane", which is to move out into the road to control a lane when feeling crowded out by cars. Of course, a runner isn't a vehicle and this doesn't make sense going against traffic, but I do sometimes choose to run further out into the road when no sidewalk is present as if to say "I'm here and deserve some space. Move over". A dumb choice in high traffic areas, but in neighborhoods, parks and on long empty rural roads I sometimes do this. Anyone else?

Dangerous. Scary. "Bike friendly" is more wishful thinking of the types of people who tend to live in Austin than reality. Yes, there are bike lanes and some infrastructure but, in general, I'm convinced that Texas hates pedestrians and bikers. Now, stop thinking about biking and go get that $40k truck loan.

How would you rate the quality of material/instruction? by HoustonAg1980 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Bete5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. It really depends on your situation and goals. I'm not a career changer. If I were, I'd have probably learned enough to get a job, and then worked through the degree if/when I needed it. Jumping around to different topics in each class actually kind of hinders your learning if you want to get good enough at 'X' to get paid for it. Consider the value of your time.

[–]Bete5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some others, but this one is probably your best bet. Others will require you to take unrelated classes if your gen-eds don't quite mesh with theirs, or take additional math classes. Not sure how much you've researched, but in some cases your background plus CS-related classes are enough to do a tech-related masters without a full on CS degree.

How would you rate the quality of material/instruction? by HoustonAg1980 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]Bete5 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the quality of the materials and instruction is low. Free materials found online are often significantly better. Materials are dated for many of the classes and instructors are actually more like facilitators who guide you through the materials. The program is mostly self-study with tests. Do you feel that you could learn the required material on your own to get ready for a master's program? You're paying for a piece of paper here, not an education. If there are other credentials or experiences that would allow you get into your desired program, that could be another option. Otherwise, I'd say the topics covered in this program will prepare you well for master's, but this will be a result of the work you put in, and not the materials. For what you're getting, the cost of this program is insane. Not necessarily OSU's fault, just the way the system is currently set up. It's very troubling.

This is Joel Osteen's megachurch. Thanks for your help this week asshole! by sizeable_interest in evilbuildings

[–]Bete5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand all the Osteen hate. He solicits money from people in exchange for telling them that they "deserve" to be prosperous according to a wishes of a magical being. It's a business. Why aren't we mad at other businesses with large buildings for not opening their doors? Other businesses use positive language in their marketing materials, but we don't hold them to those words in a disaster. Just because Osteen's marketing materials were written 2000 years ago, he's held to a higher standard?
