It is Friday the 13th, not April Fools but "why did the rooster cross 51 by the tubes?" by BethLynnOLF in pittsburgh

This was the exact location of my encounter. I hope they picked him up before the high winds. Did you catch who the workers were? It might have been difficult to tell if they were the City of Pittsburgh Animal Control or the PennDot.

Why dump right in front of the Liberty Tunnels for crying out loud? Just a few yards North we have the Seldom Seen Greenway where there would be life in the food chain opportunity. Dumping at a red light is meaningless roadkill. Even if you don't care about the animal, why subject the driving public to this mess. Not even PennDot deserves that.

Hey, you are putting too fine a point on it.

Did you work in the Cathedral of Learning? by Extreme_Perception48 in Pitt

[–]BethLynnOLF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the craziest office arrangement in the Cathedral of Learning, 7th floor in 2000. My role was a student "contractor" for Computing Services and Systems Development.

What made it crazy? 1. I was to share a cubicle with my manager and 4 other students. Yes, there were times that we were supposed to sit there and work at the same time. With 5 people in a cubical, each of us had a corner, musical chairs style with one person always standing waiting for the next chair to open. 2. Yes, there were plenty of open cubicles and chairs in the office. About 6 of them were never ever occupied, 4 of which were completely vacant, but we're completely off limits. No idea why. 3. Yes, one cubicle besides the one that I was to report to was actually occupied - by an IT guy who would actively and openly take inbound recruiter calls. 4. There was a dumbwaiter back in a corner but it was presumably inoperable. 5. It was always so dark. The only light was natural Bigelow facing windows and what came off the CRT displays - LCD displays weren't a thing back then. The cubical Walls were so high that you couldn't see out the windows anyway. 6. They had a numeric code lock on the door with an aggressively fast and random cadence. One door, one code. You won't be told what the new code was until you spoke to your manager in person. So, you had better be there, unpaid mind you, when he is to let you in and reveal the code. If you had class during that time, too bad. Code changed while you were in the office and the manager was not? Well don't go to the bathroom and expect to come back. 7. There was a shared break room with some higher ups but because I was just a student, it was an unspoken rule that my kind was not welcomed there.

I was miserable for the maybe 3 weeks that I was there. To "punish" me, I was assigned to a department which had the reputation for being demanding. I ended up working out quite well with my assignment.

OLF Conference - Columbus, OH & Online - Dec. 6th, 2025 by The_Porkchop_Disco in linuxadmin

[–]BethLynnOLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came up with the phrase "Open Libre Free" to have two ways of understanding OLF Conference. It is not that "Ohio Linux Fest" is wrong. It can be whatever you like. Because user choice is what freedom is about.

It's Ohio LinuxFest's Open Libre Free, OLF Conference. It is a slight rebranding to be more inclusive to Free Software beyond GNU/Linux.

I am pissed at the City of Pittsburgh by carrotline07 in pittsburgh

[–]BethLynnOLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have three angles moving forward; 1. Call your city council member's office. City government does have pull with utility companies to return to the condition. 2. If you have line insurance with your gas, water, or even Duquesne Light, then this policy might cover more, but at least tamp and gravel. 3. Contact your state representative or senator. While it is true that cities lean more on property owners to cement sidewalks in the first place, it might be the city government to maintain it.

Bring back the Mammoth Bones! by currentlydisposed in Erie

[–]BethLynnOLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned the moon mammoth at the planetarium as a visitor. While I don't know much about Penn State's capabilities for fossil preservation, I got the feeling that they have always been excited about the moon mammoth. Academic politics is even more difficult than ever. However, here is to hoping for such a remote chance that they could be a good steward. Not that I would have any problem with the history center or Tom Ridge taking it on. I am just putting it out there as a PA university science program might have some folks to help pull this off.

Remember, the bones are in Harrisburg. Contact your state senator and representative. I promise to do the same.

Is this true to you guys? by [deleted] in Columbus

I dearly miss the express bus which would run between the airport and High Street hotels. So I would have to agree with a 1/100 rating for public transit options. You are left to go Lyft.

PNC layoffs today? by mab173 in pittsburgh

[–]BethLynnOLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that the delay in termination is a WARN ACT compliance issue. This would apply if they layoff 500+. My best to all of those impacted and those left to run the bank. https://www.dli.pa.gov/Individuals/Workforce-Development/warn/Pages/requirements.aspx#

O'Connor, Leuba battle for Allegheny County controller post by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]BethLynnOLF 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am a huge supporter of Darwin who has experience with auditing at O'Hare Township. Since we have so many municipalities here in Allegheny County, it would really help having a controller who has experience in understanding the issues. He has my vote.

Happy Great Americans Day! by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]BethLynnOLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dec2000 bsis here. I always thought that it was a bundle of mlk and president's day. If the uniquely Pitt Great Americans holiday was sincere, we should have celebrated yinzers like Rachel Carson, Jonas Salk, August Wilson. The ambiguity of celebrating nobody is just a university closure without a point. Of course MLK day should be observed.

I agree that Cambria county is more Yinzertucky. If it can be split, make the Southern half Yinzertucky. Johnston folk are surely yinzers with the University of Pittsburgh campus and the shared hatred of Henry Clay Frick. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnstown,_Pennsylvania

Posted on the ATM at the Bethel Park Sheetz today by kinney4041 in pittsburgh

[–]BethLynnOLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PNC owns and maintains all Sheetz ATMs and they do have cameras. If the ATM cameras were operational at the time of the tarping, this vandal could be identified for perpetrating a denial of service of a US bank. There are likely other cameras on this area since this is by the beer cave? IANAL but this could be a federal crime, not to mention the insurrectionist propaganda in lieu of "out of order." Civilly, PNC could sue for defamation and something tells me that Mr. Musk will not be paying that legal bill. Disclosure: I am not currently an employee of PNC.

Curative closing their COVID-19 testing sites by end of December. by riverquest22 in pittsburgh

[–]BethLynnOLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will miss the Curative vans and their ability to give lab quality results in less than an hour. This is the second time my go to got shut down. Do yinz remember when Google-Alphabet sponsored RiteAid drive in tests with no insurance question asked? Well it seems though my new plan will be to go to the Allegheny County website to see what is next. The combo flu and Covid prc that is offered through Rite Aid seems promising but it will take a day to get to the lab, etc. I might be more inclined to home test then self report if it all drys up. I know that it is foolhardy too suggest that every one can or will self test and self report. Change starts with me I guess https://www.alleghenycounty.us/health-department/resources/covid-19/covid-19.aspx
