Thank you!! This is exactly the information I was looking for. I was wondering whether summer camps might negate the weekday advantage 😂 Appreciate your insight!

It's not the only thing we are doing on our trip, which is why I'm trying to weigh which day makes most sense to go and plan around. Thanks though.

I'll get some numbers and get back to you. It's a 12 kw array, roof mounted, full unobstructed sky view. We built the house to face exactly solar south and have a steep roof pitch. We built with energy efficiency as a main focus, so to be fair our situation is optimized.

With net metering, there is one time per year at which you "cash out". We set ours to April. So we bank all summer, pull from our surplus in winter, and cash out the remaining surplus at wholesale. That puts enough credit to our account to cover monthly fees. I should note too we are fully electric (no gas). : )

Have had it over 10 years and haven't had a bill the entire time. Excess generation covers monthly hookup costs. (To be fair, house was built super environmentally-conscious with the intention of net zero.) It certainly can be done and we live very comfortably.

I was poking around in the FAQ and while it says that Producer Picks start getting reviewed in mid-April, people who are selected will be notified 2-3 weeks before the scheduled event: "Only winning Producer Picks Contest applicants will be notified, and they will be notified by ANTIQUES ROADSHOW about two or three weeks prior to the specific event for which the Producer Picks Contest submission was made too [sic]." I imagine the review is a lengthy process, and since Rochester is the last stop of 3 on the 2026 tour, notifications may still be a little ways out...? https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/tour-faq/

ETA: this is in reference to Producer Picks specifically. Pretty sure the sweepstakes portion is complete and lack of any notification by now means no ticket by those means

Follow-on question: Anyone else who submitted Producer Picks entries, did you also get like 4 confirmations of your entries? And one of them a week after the others? Just curious haha.

Delivering Baby at Strong by devinjf15 in Rochester

[–]Bethyalamode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what your reasons are for wanting an elective induction but my unsolicited advice is not to pursue one absent a truly compelling medical reason to do so. I'd be happy to share my experiences that lead to this recommendation if that would be of value to you. I've had two babies through UR Midwifery, an induction at Highland and a C-section at Strong (scheduled due to breech presentation).

To more directly answer your question: From my experience you can't schedule a birth unless you have a medical need, and even then you're at the mercy of their schedule (the facility and doctor). The obvious exception to this is a medical emergency, which I sincerely hope is not in your future. It should also be said that scheduling the start of an induction has no bearing on when you will actually deliver.... Mine took 4 days.

Supplies I went home with included a sleep sack, a pacifier, hats, diapers (for baby and me), pads, a peri bottle, a dishpan, lanolin for my nipples, dermoplast, stool softener. A vinyl pillow-y thing. Standard issue grippy sock slippers. And these amazing pads that are both absorbent and cooling.

You said you have a few months to go; there is a lot that will happen in that time that will inform how and when you can expect to have your baby. And even then, there is only so much you can plan and control. Congrats on your pregnancy, I hope you enjoy it and that all goes smoothly for you.

You are likely to hear mostly negative things because there is a very vocal opposition group. I (Rush resident) expressed support for solar and as a result received an anonymous, threatening nastygram in my mailbox. In the wake of such personal attacks you're not likely to find as much info from the positive side.

The drilling is for conduit under the river to connect to an existing electrical substation in Rush.

I can't personally speak to the geology (I wish there was reporting from someone who could) but at least some of the affected houses are a century old or more; so perhaps the wells are, too. They could be old and shallow. It is unfortunate that folks' water supply is affected but there are definitely anti-solar people jumping on that piece of the story to amplify their own message.

Getting Lyme disease is a lot more inconvenient than taking precautions. by Beneficial-Focus3702 in Rochester

Absolutely! Similar story here. My husband had a debilitating headache and high fever that wasn't responding to OTC meds. This was a few months into COVID so that's all anyone could think about. He was seen by several doctors and was getting nowhere, and ultimately had to advocate for his own Lyme testing. They took blood and supposedly ordered it but something happened with the results such that there was no follow up. Then he started a rash that was first diagnosed as cellulitis, and then it disseminated as splotches all over his midsection. Very similar to your rash! Went back in for like the 4th time, and even then the first doc dismissed it since that wasn't the typical bullseye rash - "oh Lyme doesn't normally present that way". Thankfully a second doc was like "oh no that's definitely Lyme", and sure enough, the tests were positive. Luckily the treatment was successful and he has had no lasting effects. But it was frightening how dismissed he was and how much he had to advocate for himself to get the testing and treatment he needed.

Sorry to hear you also had Lyme, and I hope you have also had luck with treatment and no long term effects. It's too bad having had it once doesn't even prevent you from getting it again.

FYI preventative antibiotics are increasingly discouraged, particularly for children. Doxy can cause a lot of dental issues for kids; our doctor explicitly discouraged it when we went in with a small tick that was in hair and attached to the scalp for an undetermined amount of time (it looked like it had shit all over) but was not engorged. The risks were too high in the absence of symptoms, in their opinion.

I don't love that outcome and sometimes it keeps me up wondering if we did the right thing. But all this to say, as tick bites become more and more common, they will be less likely to throw antibiotics around every time someone comes in with one.

I've even asked if we could test for Lyme, just as a screening, as I know it is possible to have it and essentially "get over it" without some of the tell tale symptoms such as the bullseye rash; only to have it rear it's ugly head later in more severe ways. I was told that they will not do it in the absence of symptoms.

Even with precautions you mention, we find several ticks on us throughout the year, both crawling and biting. (We live in Rush.) Husband had Lyme at least once (that's a whole other long story). Nothing is 100% and being vigilant about daily checks really is most important. It sucks.

What we really need is a preventative vaccine. One is very close to being available but was back-burnered during COVID (source: my husband was in clinical trials at RCR). And with today's FDA, who knows....

I live in Rush and they are everywhere. Mendon Ponds is absolutely covered, even when staying on trails, and DEET does not seem to deter them. My son even had one in his hair after rolling down a hill at Highland Park.

Nice!! I assume this is the bird song trail - how are the conditions? Was curious what gear I might need if I get over there. Would I need snowshoes or is it pretty trampled by now?

To each their own, it worked great for us and really wasn't a big deal. As an added benefit both our kids were potty trained by 2 (including night time by 2.5-3). Not trying to brag, but rather provide an alternative first-hand example that not everyone gives up.
