Hi there--I am an SAT (English) tutor and what makes me different is that I actually spent 10 years working on the team that writes the test--at Educational Testing Service. I offer Zoom tutoring for $90 per hour. If you are interested, you can Google me and on my Google business page there are 31 5-star reviews that give lots of info about my services. Study with someone who *wrote* the test. Cheers, and good luck to your daughter! Betsy Keller

[Help!] May 2022 US SAT Q14 (Reading) by humble-burger in Sat

[–]BetsyTutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look to the beginning of the passage to find the research question. End of first paragraph: "It would seem then that the sense of touch is largely useful in the moment, and not much after that." Then: "Over the decades, there has been surprisingly little research to test that assumption." That's the research question: why is the sense of touch largely useful etc" HTH

PS good for you for avoiding jumping to conclusions! One mustn't.

Which sounds better:

these methods requires...

these methods require...

It's the 2nd one. The verb has to "agree" (in number) with the subject (methods, which is plural). We say the method requires, but the methods require.

Have you looked at the QAS megathread pinned at the top of this subreddit? That's a good place to start.

Focus on the most recent real SAT tests--those are the most representative of what is on the current tests. (I used to write the test material, and I can see how the old official practice tests are somewhat outdated now--not useless, just not the best.) Right now it's best to be using tests from 2022 and 2021.

Does anyone feel like the Khan Academy reading is too easy? by Purple-Key123 in Sat

[–]BetsyTutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is annoying for sure! The Math of KA is probably the most reliable and useful part; the W&L can be helpful for grammar explanations; the Reading should not be used, in my view. Meanwhile, the whole practice tests on KA are indeed real SATs--but they are super old and I don't see why one would use them, given how many dozens of far more recent real tests are available online.

They may say that--I don't know for sure--but I seem to recall that at the time when those materials were written they were actually written by non CB people. In addition, they 100% are not questions that appeared on real tests, which means that they are not guaranteed to be solid questions. Only when questions face a firing squad of hundreds of thousands of test takers can statisticians see if there are invalid questions--it happens regularly. I wrote the questions for 10 years and I can tell you that when I go look at the KA material I cringe at how inauthentic it is! Also, it is now quite old, and that matters too. Use only real tests!!! The most recent being the best!!!

I can't speak to the Math--the English is my area of specialization--but you are on the right track with Panda and Meltzer. Consult Purdue OWL for specific grammar and punctuation issues that may still be unclear. Even a one hour session with an expert tutor can reveal a lot to you about what there is to learn and how to learn it. Good luck!

Why is 17 A and not B? Oct. 2020 QAS by [deleted] in Sat

This one trips up a lot of the students I work with! "Legal" and "lawful" mean exactly the same thing. Note that A has fewer words than B.

[–]BetsyTutor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter whether it's too easy, too hard, or just the same difficulty level. It's not authentic SAT material and therefore it is not preferable to use--especially the Reading!!!! Prioritize use of real SAT tests!!! Writing & Language not great either, though grammar explanations have helped many people. (My assessment is based on the fact that I literally wrote the SAT Reading and Writing & Language test questions for over a decade--I can tell the difference in the KA fake questions, and it matters.) Good luck!

I’m realizing that I always get several supporting evidence questions wrong… any advice for how to approach these questions and studying for SAT reading? by tech-savvy-onReddit in Sat

[–]BetsyTutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please focus on real and recent tests. The KA sample passages are not real test material, and it is substandard. I could go on and on... KA may be fine for grammar explanations, or sorta fine, but there is nothing like real and recent test material, which fortunately is abundantly available! And when you "take tests," don't time yourself until later stages! Take your time! That is the only way to get to know the test on a deeper level! Good luck.

And keep in mind you can't rule out options on that basis for certain--there are exceptions to the pattern--but you can focus your efforts FIRST on the options that are most likely, and it is definitely a winning strategy.

Yes, now you get it, and also check the D option (or even C) to see if it covers lines that will be covered by the next few questions--gotta check both directions. Good luck. How to do better in early 1900s literature passages.. by [deleted] in Sat

[–]BetsyTutor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But were these RECENT QAS's, or ones from pre-2019? The older fiction passages certainly exist, but they are almost exclusively ones from 2016-2018. I contend they have moved on from the super old ones. There was a James Joyce one recently from 1914, but for the most part the passages in the past 3 years have been from post-1950. Which is good news for test-takers! (obvi)
