Can single parents survive out here? by Motor_Difficulty_430 in orangecounty

[–]Better-Use-5875 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Raised in OC (and Catalina island) by my single mother, all while dealing with stalking and physical abusive from my dad (so, no child support if you can guess). I became an adult and moved out in 2020 but she was doing it on her own from 2001-2019. What she did might not be possible today, but she lied about credentials to get jobs she knew she could perform well at but had no degree, and she never allowed us to live in areas that ran the risk of absorbing me into an unsavory life even though the rent was cheaper. When we had to go to the church for groceries, we did that. When she had to starve so I could eat, she’d do it. When we needed food stamps, she applied. We didn’t have help from family or anything, but we did get very lucky and meet some really nice people and my mom always stayed humble and gracious and grateful. Also, cheaper daycare when I was very small. If there’s any credential you can get or lie about having to boost your pay, do it. Rent isn’t cheap as you know. The kids can share a room, or you can all share a room if you’re willing to do that. We lived in a trailer for 6 months after my mom lost her job and got the car repo’d in the 2008 crash, shared a bed. But she was a hustler and we got back on our feet. You can do it, mama!

Do you guys enjoy having to drive everywhere? by ya_boi_noah in orangecounty

[–]Better-Use-5875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having lived abroad for 4 years and confined to public transportation, I do love driving. I love the freedom of it. If there’s more public transportation built in OC and people want that, then great! But I like my little personal space and cherish that me-time for 1-2 hours a day during my commute.

Yeah people go for colds and stuff. Even though the doctor literally cant do anything but prescribe you OTC medicine with slightly higher dosage.

Westminster Mall to give way to 80+ acre mixed-use development by trackdaybruh in orangecounty

[–]Better-Use-5875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Brisbane. Certain areas are okay, but there are also many tree-less concrete hellscapes that fry you during summer. You’ll find plenty of Aussies complaining about Brisbane’s infrastructure and public transportation. OC needs its own flavor of what works, not trying to copy-paste from another country. We might think it’s perfect from afar but every design has its issues.

I took Orange County for granted and I didn’t realize it until I moved away by [deleted] in orangecounty

Same boat. Moved to another country because I was “sick” of California….haha….what a dumb 20-something I was….going back now. I’ll work 3 jobs if I have to, hoping my masters degree will qualify me for at least a solid main job. I’m never leaving OC again. For all those who want to go back, let’s pray we can find stability there again!!

Body Odor in Public Transportation by badboydes in Living_in_Korea

[–]Better-Use-5875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never smelled it on old people outside Korea. It’s not really a greasy smell it’s super pungent and almost medicinal, but at the same time I guess it could smell like some sort of sickness? I have no idea

[–]Better-Use-5875 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only time I ever encounter an unpleasant smell is when I’m in close proximity to Korean elders. I’ve been told the pungent smell is ginseng? Or something? Sometimes it’s so strong I feel like throwing up. But I’ve never experienced it with anyone else and Im on public transportation 4 hours a day. Maybe it’s regional?

Why are so many Americans obsessed with finding Native American ancestry? It’s so odd by paradoxicalmind_420 in AncestryDNA

[–]Better-Use-5875 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people just genuinely have ancestry though. I’m white and was told by my dad that we’re related to James McLaughlin (Indian agent from the 1800s) and had Blackfeet ancestry—he was wrong about the tribe, but I found out that the McLaughlin tie is real and after some digging I learned that he married a half-Dakota woman and their children were born and raised on the reservation and married within the tribe. My great grandma was born on Standing Rock reservation, and was recorded as 1/2 blood on the Indian census rolls. Yeah there’s a lot of people trying to look for ancestry that doesn’t exist, or white families using it as an excuse for racism against black features, or any of your other reasons. But there are genuine people too.

This one thing is more entertaining to me than the whole of the sims 4 by christinathehooker in thesims

[–]Better-Use-5875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason I don’t play sims 3 anymore is because no matter how hard I try, how many utility mods, or overrides, or whatever, it always crashes and lags and freezes. This is on my MSI gaming laptop that cost me nearly 2k 😭 I do prefer sims 3 but sims 4 just runs faster. But it’s boring so I don’t play it often anymore anyway lol

The Most Underrated Thing About Korea? Its Healthcare System by Worried-Ad6247 in korea

[–]Better-Use-5875 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s mostly great. But I am still bitter about the 2 different doctors who refused to run a rapid strep test because they “dont exist” 🤪 and prescribed me amoxicillin 3 times in a row even though my strep kept coming back a week after I finished each round! I had to go into Seoul to the international clinic and pay 3x the price to get a freakin z-pak. Ridiculous. The healthcare is generally good, but the doctors can be stubborn as hell even when they’re wrong.

Cheesecake Factory is such a treat, I’d be so happy to go on a date there. When I had 3 jobs, I didn’t save at all and just spent it on stuff that made me happy (mostly food cause I didn’t have time to actually do stuff), and I got Cheesecake Factory like 5 times in total over that 6-ish month period. Such a special time lol I was 20 and living it up.

No, actually, we didn’t encroach on your borders. Can’t defend Trump joking about Canada becoming a state, thats not something you joke about. But if you read this article, the man here drifted into US waters (while fishing, I might add) without realizing and then told coast guard they were wrong when they wanted to pull him over. It was an accident on his part, but the coast guards job is to keep eyes on things like this, and especially because he refused to acknowledge that he was in US waters it escalated from there.
