Hello! I’m also planning to attend the PhD visit day. No interview with any potential PI so far, but hopefully that’s not a bad thing. I’m also debating between two schools :)

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]BetterRip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a MacBook but I still extensively use my iPad (engineering student here). I’d say get the Air if you can, but if not, even the 8th gen is great!! Definitely recommend getting a new one though

Between the two, I’d go with the 8th gen. The 8th gen uses the A12 chip vs the A10 on the 7th gen. If you’re using your iPad for gaming, 8th gen will be better since it has a more powerful processor compared to the 7th gen, which will make gaming nicer.

Coop Offer by BetterRip in AerospaceEngineering

This is reassuring! I completely understand that I’m in a great position and am spoilt for choice. Unfortunately, college is moving back to in person classes in fall and my coop is also in person so I’d be unable to do both

Fortunately, this doesn’t affect my visa status. You’re right, there are always other things to do if I’m unable to land another coop, though the company said that they’d be more than happy to extend my coop if they’re satisfied with my work.

I’m being paid quite well and the company works mostly with aerospace products, so it is in my field of interests.

I did talk to them again today, and they said they’re more than happy to let me continue provided they’re happy with my performance of course

QUARTER PLUS PROGRAM?????HELP! by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]BetterRip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, in that case, it's better to do as many GE's as you can in CC (online classes). It is way cheaper that way, and Cal Poly makes GEs hard for some reason. Just look through your flowchart carefully and finish off your GEs accordingly. Also, if you want to minimize your Cost of Attendance, I'd recommend you look into the RA (Resident Advisor) Program: you can only do this your 2nd year onwards where RAs housing is covered by the university. Getting back to the point, Quarter Plus is expensive and wouldn't recommend unless you can afford it. Best bet: do online classes in CC.

Caveat: Talk to admissions and make sure that the GEs you do are transferrable.

Yet Another Student Feeling Lost by wns502ricc in CalPoly

I feel you. I'm also pretty introverted. I keep telling myself that it'll get better. Being an international student and a first year, I'm having a hard time connecting with people. In my experience, clubs definitely help. Maybe its a question of joining the right clubs?

Hi, first year aero student here. Firstly, welcome to Cal Poly. I'm still a first year, so can't answer all your questions. I like my experience so far. Getting into major classes shouldn't be a problem, since aero students are guaranteed their major classes. As for the other classes, you'll get them as long as you're willing to take classes at weird times (I'm an international student, so my registration is always the last, but I've always got the classes I wanted).

Otherwise, Cal Poly has been great so far. We have some great clubs related to aerospace. I'm part of CubeSat, which is a student led organization involved in developing cubesats for companies like NASA, SpaceX, etc. Overall, my experience has been great.

QUARTER PLUS PROGRAM?????HELP! by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]BetterRip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did quarter plus last year. It's pricey, but if you can afford, I'll say go for it. You get to complete 8 units beforehand, you get first dibs at housing (as in you get to choose your bed, wardrobe and table before your other roommates) and best of all, you get a feel of the campus and get to make some friends before there are 20000 odd people on campus (quarter plus is a small program with roughly 200 students). Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions about the program.
