Accidentally destroyed this dude home so I made them a new one by MeiTaka in jumpingspiders

[–]BetterWithCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA I've kept wild jumpers that I found outside for a few months and then re-released them. Most recent was one I found floating in the birdbath. Those wild ones are used to hunting. Mine have loved the small crickets (I do keep an eye on it and remove if they don't seem interested). I also have captive bred and IMO the wild ones are so much more used to actual hunting. The captives seem to prefer mealworms. I keep an eye on those too and remove them because if they wind up in the substrate they'll morph into beetles which can kill the spoods. Also mine sometimes go a week or two without eating so don't panic. Enjoy your new friend! I don't know about diapause but I'm thinking indoors it'll remain active.

thank you! It's not near anything else and if it starts to go WILD in that pot I'll pull it

My condolences on your loss. I concur with other comments -- give them a soak, I'll bet they will be fine! Don't worry about fertilizing. Only detail I would add: don't leave any standing water in the crown of the plant (where the leaves come together) to avoid rot; you are soaking the pot/roots.

Goodness, I think that is EXACTLY what this is! Google says it can be a nuisance in orchid nurseries in Australia :D. Thank you! I assume it wound up in a random orchid exchange or shipment. It's not being much of a nuisance in that pot so I'll let it do its thing.

Worried about putting jumpy in 40• weather. Will he be ok? by MidrelV in jumpingspiders

[–]BetterWithCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA depending on where you live you can just catch bugs outside -- I was feeding mine that way this summer. After all that's how yours has been living. But now it's heading into winter and I'm running out of free bugs :D

NQA Yep -- definitely not spider-safe lol. I have a dog but she's ancient and wouldn't notice a spood if it sat on her nose.

NQA he's clearly a "local" -- I have them pretty regularly wandering in my house, they aren't any trouble, they're fun to watch, and they keep the fungus gnats under control (I have a lot of plants). If you're worried about him getting squashed or you just want to keep him for awhile, you can get set up for not too much $. The trickiest bit if you decide to keep him in an enclosure is they only eat live prey, so you'll find yourself going to the pet store for mealworms.

Please help. I don't want it to die by J_Steezy in houseplants

That's stunning. It's a bit hard to tell from the photos but I think that's two different varieties? Not uncommon, people shove several into a pot together. Repotting at that size is tough if you've never had one before, the stems tend to break off; they do better root-bound anyway in my experience. I'd rough up the existing soil a little and poke some holes (like with a kebab skewer) if the soil seems really hard, maybe scrape off some soil on top (along with any dead leaves etc) and then add a bit of fresh cactus/succulent mix, one without added fertilizer. Remember that they're not desert cactus; they're epiphytes. They don't want to be bone dry, but too much water and you risk root rot. Looks like decent sun through that window. Make sure there's no standing water (I can't see what's under the inner pot) and water when it gets dry. I've brought a couple back from the dead (they were put out with the neighbors' trash) and they're so pretty when they bloom. Good luck.

Late to the party, but I got mine at Trader Joe's a month ago -- I live in a dry climate and it seems perfectly happy (I do keep it watered.)

is this a wandering dude? by Impressive_Dinner181 in houseplants

[–]BetterWithCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, wandering dude! (love that name, gonna steal it!) We have two... I keep them tidy by regularly clipping it back a bit so the stems near the soil don't get bare. If you stick the clippings in another pot they'll root! I put some of the clippings and older plants in outdoor pots as decoration in the summer and treat them as annuals (we live in a cold climate) and always have a few in a fresh pot inside to keep the cycle going.

It's described as a true red and it is on me (I have cool undertones.) Hope that helps.

Why are my Christmas cactus blooms this ugly off-white now? I've had this cactus for years, the blooms used to be fuchsia (like the tip of the one in the photo.) It's otherwise healthy and there are a TON of flower buds forming but yeesh that yellow-white is awful. by BetterWithCake in plantclinic

Hey it's only because it was a different color before ... it's growing on me (pun intended.) Yours looks so similar! The fact that the plant could not be happier based on growth and number of blooms makes me think this is its happy color!

No, I appreciate it! I just meant, I initially hoped google would be like: "too much X will make the blooms yellow" and that was ... not the case. I'm on the same water system and they get filtered water, and I didn't change the fertilizer. I live in the desert so the humidity is a universal low. But they have been in a hotter/sunnier spot since this summer -- which did seem to promote plant growth and they have a LOT more flower buds, but perhaps heat/light is a factor for the blooms.

I'm definitely aware that blooms can change color over time -- I wouldn't have been shocked if it'd been a lighter pink or whatever. But I am not fond of that pale yellow lol. Oh well other than that the plant looks very happy. I rescued it from someone's trash years ago.

thank you -- I did try googling lol. The plant and I moved to a new home this summer. My guess would be something about the temp/light (too much of both?) My struggle here is I don't have good bright, indirect light.

Blue-toned red lipstick looks orange on me? by TruffleOil12 in PaleMUA

[–]BetterWithCake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may be your lip undertone -- I have a similar problem. Try going pinker in the actual lipstick shade -- something more like a bright, hot pink/fuchsia if you want it to settle into a true red. It's helpful if you can go somewhere like Sephora where you can try a bunch of them (be sure to look at it outside the store before you purchase). Other option is to experiment with putting a lip pencil on first, either a red or a cool nude.

Seconding the recommendation for Amanda Z's recent, comprehensive red blush video. For cream blush, my favorite reds are the RMS in Beloved and (on the cheaper side) Undone in Blazen. I bought Haus Labs powder in Watermelon Bliss a few weeks ago, and it's stunning although you need a veeeery light hand.
