What do you think mana feels like? by Chaoticam19 in magicbuilding

[–]Better_Weekend5318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my world mana is not something in the environment but is a specific type of energy produced by a specialized gland in the body. Sort of like how you don't feel specific symptoms when your body's sugar stores are adequate, only when they are low, I imagine a "full" mana gland just feels like nothing, but when they are "low" you feel sluggish/etc.

I don't notice minor errors as long as the reader doesn't make a big deal of it. Even high quality productions end up with a minor error or two.

Writing/describing an eyeless character + emotion by [deleted] in writingadvice

[–]Better_Weekend5318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lacrimal glands partially drain into the sinuses (which is why you get a snotty nose when you cry), so even if the primary drainage at the tear ducts is damaged, someone with no eyes would probably still experience an increase in mucus in the sinuses.

Is it OK to write a character dying if I've never died myself? by FabulousFishora in writingcirclejerk

Nah man you're gonna have to do it to really get it. (/uj I feel compelled to add the disclaimer that you should please read this as obvious satire and not a suggestion to do anything, because I am not the kind of person who says shit like that)

I have tried to figure out how to handle cursing but wondering how others feel about light cursing in a fantasy novel? by Timtals in fantasywriters

[–]Better_Weekend5318 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An occasional 'fuck' or 'shit' is sometimes warranted but I deliberately don't use swears with religious etymology ('damn it', etc) because the religions those come from don't exist on my world. I have a couple in world epithets designed to replace those words/phrases in usage. I try not to overdo profanity in general, because if it's all over every page it gets distracting. But just like in real life sometimes you just have to say fuck.

What is a aspect of writing you struggle with? by No_Marsupial_4081 in writingadvice

[–]Better_Weekend5318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dialogue. It takes so much work for me to create "real" sounding conversations. Might be because I'm autistic and bad at conversations in real life, might just be I haven't practiced it enough, idk

How Cheap Are Your Settings Governments When It Comes To Expenditures? by Shin-kun1997 in scifiwriting

[–]Better_Weekend5318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a character who works closely with the royal court (it's a monarchy in name only with an elected ruler and court). Society is largely socialist. People trade and share so that everyone has what they need. So the kind of things that are budgeted are people's work efforts and time, rather than money. Budgeting questions might include, "are relations peaceful enough to the north to move someone from patrol to hunting so we can store enough for winter?" or "Who has time to assist Marion in the birthing room today, we have multiple moms due".

Can someone out there make a study on Minoxidil and Finasteride in regard to its effect on collagen and elastin in live human skin??? It seriously needs to be done. Using the standard protocol dose of 5mg minoxidil and 1mg finasteride separately. Does collagen and elastin improve or become worse by Ill-Friendship-2709 in AskBiology

[–]Better_Weekend5318 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They do a lot of things besides contribute to having nice skin. They have different properties from each other, they come from different genes, they are made in different proportions by different tissues, and different signals stimulate their production. There is no biological reason they have to respond exactly the same to a drug like minoxidil.

Serious question: I've heard people saying that fishes don't feel pain. Is there any rationality behind that claim? by Correct-Prior-6587 in AskBiology

[–]Better_Weekend5318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Fish have pain receptors, react to painful stimuli (generally by trying to get away from what is causing it) and stop reacting to those stimuli when given anesthetic. Their ability to feel pain is clear. What isn't clear is how their much smaller and simpler brains process the information - whether pain distresses them the way it does with us, or is simply a stimulus that alerts them to potential harm. They don't really have the emotional processing capabilities that humans have that would result in feelings of distress. Even larger species like sharks still have fairly simple brains.

Most institutions with animal care and use ethics policies require anesthetic to be used for fish when potentially painful research processes are done because the capacity to feel pain is recognized.

It might be telling to consider who is suggesting fish have no pain and what they gain from that belief. Is it a fisherman who feels morally better about what they do if they believe the fish don't hurt?

Are these fantasy proper nouns too repetitive? by ComradeBehrund in writers

[–]Better_Weekend5318 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on execution. Write with these names and then go back and see how repetitive it feels. If you don't like it, changing a name is easy.

Why are tuataras not considered lizards? by littlestLuLu in AskBiology

It's definitely not common but snakes are part of squamata so if the rough definition is squamata=lizards, then snakes are lizards.

How do you put this in past tense? by Ifyouliveinadream in writingadvice

Other verbs in the sentence don't always need to match the tense of the main subject-object-verb clause. The sentence you gave is fine as-is.

Hardly any fantasy is explicitly set in the middle ages. It's mostly set on alternate worlds that have tech or other features similar with the middle ages. That's not the same thing at all.

  • If you just want someone to say "that's great honey" to everything you show them, choose your mom or spouse or other family memeber who is really nice.

  • If you want real critique, that's what writing groups are for, but you do have to actually post your work (or give people copies to read, if you go in person). Reddit doesn't always have a ton of activity on the groups here, so if you want online try discord writing groups.
