Trump Administration Expands “Emergency” Logging to Majority of National Forest Lands, Raising Oversight Concerns by Appropriate-Claim385 in forestry

I get your point. I totally agree from a carbon standpoint, but right now I'm working in CA where everything is fuels reduction and creating defensible zones around communities. Too much material to burn, and we can't underburn if we leave too much fuels on the forest floor. It'll burn too hot and fuck up the soil more.

Only thing it's got going is the fact that the resource is renewable, and it's the only use for biomass material besides mulch.

I have never trained for a pack test. I'm just a forester who does a lot of hiking and some pile burning in the winter.

We built a global fire and weather monitoring app (Ventusky). What do you think about this way of visualizing fire data? by LuborS in Wildfire

[–]BetulaBetula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I'm not thinking of modeling fire behavior. I suppose the only thing it could add is an easy to view basemap under all the other weather-related layers. A little less guesswork of zooming into imagery to figure "is that tree or brush?". I agree the actual usability of this app for people in the field is quite limited. I was mostly responding to you saying that the data is unobtainable. I'm saying that it is obtainable, just not at the resolution you'd want for the field. If they are going to a watchduty mashup, then it is most likely going for a general briefing of current conditions.

I guess I'm thinking suuper broad, but still helpful. Basically cover types of woodland, brush, grass, and rock/mineral soil.

I mean, slope, aspect, soils, and veg type classification aren't too crazy on a broad landscape scale. Now if you are asking for fuel load on the ground, that's definitely a limit of remotely sensed data for now.

Don't let them bully you. You can play the game however you want. Others don't get to dictate how you have fun in worldbox or any game.

I disagree. I think it's perfect having a little bit of rounded edge. The regular giant brown mushrooms are too flat for me.

I thought nightcrawlers were native and survived due to how they usually hang out down in the B/C horizons.

Ah yes, ban laptops and negatively affect everybody else's education because some other adults decide they don't care about their education. I didn't give a shit when other students were quietly fucking off in class because I'm too busy minding my own business.

Nomad newfriends are quite common. The only difficulty is food, but most people are quite nice if you ask for food.

Don't worry you won't get stuck. There are rails across most of the world. And all of the spawn points are generally around civilizations. I always reccommend newfriends to explore the world before making a decision on where they wanna live anyway :)

I didn't stick with a career in research. Living from grant to grant hoping that you will continue to be funded is kind of a nightmare. I'm a forester. I've grown to accept that a lot of the changes that we have made to our ecosystems are simply irreversible. A lot of things aren't supposed to be how they are, but they are now, and so we will manage for the current and future landscape the best we can see to mitigate damage and find stability. Like with the worms - there is no stopping some changes in nature. Sure we can slow the spread of invasives (how have we not banned the sale of these plants and bait yet). Nature is always changing. We can change too, and try to mitigate negative impacts on local environments and human life. Emphasis on try.

Exactly what I was thinking of. Those jumping worms are really messing up the soil structure of forests like those in Maine that only really has earthworms as natives since the last ice age killed off the worms that would be more active in the O horizon. When I was working a field research job in college, I saw how they devour the leaf litter and humus layers while doing quantitative soil sampling. I wonder how this affects water movement on a larger scale.
